Ivo Zdarsky, who escaped Communist Czechoslovakia in an aircraft he built himself in 1984, is the only resident of a Utah ghost town so remote the nearest grocery store is 160 miles away.
The 51-year-old lives alone in an airplane hangar in the abandoned town in Utah surrounded by three runways so he can develop his designs for an experimental aircraft.
Mr Zdarsky, who manufactures plane propellers, has named his place Lucin International Airport although the only plane that lands in the town a 180 miles away from of Salt Lake City is his own.
His home split into two areas: one is for his planes and the other is his living area.
'I notice most people have a house which is usually smaller than my room,' Mr. Zdarsky told the Times..
'And inside this house is a bunch of little rooms, called bedroom, living room, whatever. If they want to do something on a computer you have to go in one room, you go to eat in another room.
'And normal people do all this, they have to navigate between all these walls. If I want walls, I can put walls here, but I haven't found a reason for walling myself in.'
'I have just one room, and I can watch the TV here, watch the computer here, eat here, and it is not claustrophobic.'
He has an interesting perspective on rooms. It's different if you're all by yourself I suppose, heck you don't even need a bathroom, the toilet and bath, etc., could be in the same room. But there are benefits to compartmentalising your home into separate rooms. To focus on one task, it can be distracting to have everything in the same room, and some room layouts are better for some activities than others. Large spaces can also get a bit draughty.
I could enjoy this sort of splendid isolation. However there is the inconvenience of having to drive for hours to get supplies, unless you happen to have a nice plane.
Well, he escaped from the totalitarian socialism to America. I wouldn't say that's a dream. Though the man cave is impressive.
I feel I should clarify in an edit: I mean being in socialist society to begin with. The escape is a dream. Sorry, I'm tired.
I've been living by myself for a couple years now. (Sometimes having roomates inbetween thoset times) And I find that I tend to spend most of my day in the same room. My computer is here in the kitchen and the only reason my PS3 isn't in here as well is that it would be quite cramped to have my sofas and big screen in here too. I like his idea, I wish I had a mancave like that.
I would throw parties like... all the time.
Damn what I would give for a swanky house like that. Although my dream of recreating the lounge area for the reapers from the world ends with you has not ended. Aquarium floors for the win!
Can't find a good image unfortunately.
I love the fact there is a pic of him with a rifle encaptioned: 'Zdarsky's girlfriend lives 240 miles away'... is it implying that he needs a bigger rifle to hit her...?
Hell, that's practically what a studio apartment is. And they're generally really cheap.
That's my ultimate plan in the next five years, to have something like this.
