The term "butthurt" seems wrong. Research seems to confirm.

I always figured it to be an anal sex joke.

Or maybe one's been butt clenching about something for so long, they've gone sore.

Or maybe they've been spanked too many times.

I don't know, I just figure it's safe, yet insulting.

How on earth is it a rape joke? It's used when people get all pissy over something trivial or can't take a joke.

If you honestly think 'butthurt' is a jab at rape victims, then we haven't anything else to discuss. Well, we do. Stop reading so far into things. It just means something along the lines of someone being so annoyed/angry that their butt hurts. There's no rape involved in someone verbally annoying someone.
Seriously, you people can't keep searching for offense in every single word that comes out of the internet and pop culture. By this logic you should change your username because it's offensive to sex slaves.

ElPatron:

Just saying, but you can get butthurt from consensual "activities".

On another news, "sand in your vagina" is offensive to beach nudists.

I tip my hat to you good sir. That was quite rollicking.

Agreed on wondering how the OP came by the rape idea but I'm really enjoying seeing all the different ideas around the origin coming up.

Also "Stick up your butt" could be offensive to puppets.

Of course! American english is full of anti-woman/anti-gay slurs that we should get rid of.

I verily hope this isn't sarcasm.

It's sincere. Literally just the other day I was thinking about all the swears and insults based on oral sex, that make no sense. When a straight guy calls another straight guy a "****sucker" as if it's some kind of terrible insult, what does that imply about his thoughts towards, not only homosexual men, but also women in general and his own girlfriend?

From what my research has pointed out, its more of a poke at someone being Homosexual.

Because the terms "Gey" and "FGGT" are so common in online gaming, casual and hardcore, one would assume that "Butthurt" is more directed at the person taking it "IN DA BUTT".
Such as described in this video.

And because of the blatant avoidance of taking it "in da butt", when one is burned, hurt, or damaged (as one would probably after anal insertion for the first few times), they are then "butthurt".

:D but thats just my 2cents.

Butt when I get angry on the internet, my butt starts hurting.

I thought it referred to childish whining, as in "MOMMMYYYYYY TOMMY KICKED ME IN THE BUTT" implying that a "Butthurt" person was just whining about something childish they could easily get over

So, some people are butthurt over the term butthurt? :3

yes because we all know British English isn't full of anti-woman/anti-gay slurs... oh wait

I didn't necessarily want to speak on behalf of the brits. If both American and British english are full of such slurs, then my statement that "american english is full of such slurs" is still correct.

I figure it's considerably less vulgar than the oh so common "faggot"; at least with "butt hurt" there is room for interpretation for the reason the person's butt hurts, perhaps they had eaten hot peppers recently.

Actually, it's quite similar to the phrase "pain in the ass", just sort of flipped to the person being annoyed rather than the one who's annoying. If I told somebody they were a pain in the ass, I would hope they wouldn't think I was implying that they had anal sex with me.

there is room for interpretation with "faggot".. .after all the slang meaning of a homosexual man is not it's original meaning but a newer use of the word...

perhaps the person calling you a faggot is simply calling you a bundle of stick or iron bars or maybe a ball of chopped meat... thus insulting your intelligence by comparing you to said inanimate items... I mean technically it can be used to refer to a bundle of anything so it might be a compliment by saying you are a bundle meaning you are a collection of many things... he could be giving you a "faggot of compliments" :D

Fair enough; next time I play call of duty, I'll thank everyone for calling me a bundle of win and awesome
: D

Firstly

What does it even matter where the word came from? Even if it did somehow originally refer to rape (which I doubt), people who use it in that term are usually not using it to mean anything other than someone being very angry and annoyed.

If I call you a cunt or a dick, I'm not saying your are aa vagina or penis, respectively, but just trying to offend you. Same with butthurt, even if it was somehow rape related, it isn't used in that context now.
