Ice Cream Sandwich... Ten reasons why I Hate it!

Mmm, tasty...Oh wait.

Okay some of you may have heard of Android's latest OS, Ice Cream Sandwich...

I've recently updated my Samsung Galaxy S2 as it is now available to 3 and 02 customers in the UK.

I'm just looking for some feedback about it really because all of the tech reviews are praising it to high hell and I really haven't had the greatest experience with it...

Firstly:

1) The swapping of settings:

ICS, moves a handful of settings around, into different menus, changing some menus completely or has added a swiping functionality. There isn't inherently anything wrong with this, but when i'm looking for a setting, it'd be nice to get a little pop up where it used to be, telling me it's new function or location.

2) A promise, unkept...

Most of the time I use my phone it's for browsing. ICS promised a function which made all websites appear in their desktop format. A much welcomed feature. Except it doesn't work. Unless you can find the tiny bit of hyperlink giving you a desktop version, you are stuck with inferior mobile versions...

3) A fly in the lotion...

This may just be a bug, but it's a big one. When I switch between Wifi and 3G Data, it used to be instant and automatic. Now it won't switch until I physically turn off data usage and switch it back on again. Very annoying.

4) The obfuscation of audio...

Since the update, i'm having issues with music tags. They don't seem to work anymore for newly transferred songs. Now everything I put on falls under unknown artist. Again, most annoying.

5) The Editor's Bane...

Using text boxes such as the forum post boxes has never been easy. I used an iPhone for two years so I have a comparison. The iPhone works pretty reasonably and I was able to write up some pretty hefty threads, with formatting, editing etc. The Galaxy S2 has always been pretty poor at this, but since the update my God is it awful. The screen gives you only the tiniest space to view what you are typing and when it reaches a certain point in the line the camera snaps back to the left of the box after every key press! That and trying to put the cursor in a new place, to edit, is practically impossible. It just will not allow it. Even using the specific tool for this very purpose does not work. Also they have "simplified" the copy and paste procedure. By simplify I mean remove almost entirely. Now when you long press you get a series of icons that do nothing to describe what their function is. I think one is select and the other is copy to clipboard but it never seems to work. What the hell was wrong with cut, copy, copy all and paste!?

6)The forgotten purpose...

If you go to the phone application. Remember when you used these to call people? Well apparently Google doesn't because they've removed the ability to access your contacts from within the phone screen... What the actual fuck was the point in that??? How does that make it easier to call people!? 90% of the time you are calling somebody you already know.

7) The hastened death...

Battery life has never been great on a smartphone but some how ICS manages to drain an extra hour off your battery time... Gee thanks.

8) The unrecognised folly...

Face unlock... Sounds cool, it isn't. The phone doesn't recognise the difference between me or my mate's dog... What a waste of development time better spent on fixing all this crap.

9) The troll within...

Petty yes, but now on my lock screen I have a little patronising message that says "swipe screen to unlock". This cannot be removed and is really clashing with my wallpaper. After the first 400 times You'd think I learned how to fucking do it!

10) The denier of pleasure...

Flash support is gone... The single fucking reason this phone had HTC and Apple beaten has been removed entirely... Not only can I no longer watch the escapist videos but now it seems that GOOGLE ARE ACTIVELY CONSPIRING AGAINST MY ABILITY TO WATCH PORN...

Phew...Okay, rant over. Has anyone found anything positive to say about it beyond it has a more functional notification bar and maybe runs a fraction of a section faster?

About Android in general, I used to have one and the software got so unwieldy that it no longer functioned as a phone. Like, someone would call and I would hit the answer button, and the phone would take so long to respond that the call would end before the phone would acknowledge that I wanted to answer it. It had a lot of features that I liked, but using them was a chore. I have an iPhone now that is thoroughly adequate. I kinda wish I still had an Android phone, but what you're saying sounds like they're taking away a good bit of what I liked

Now excuse me, I'm off to find somewhere that sells ice cream sandwiches

I was expecting a thread about ice cream sandwiches.

The rage I now feel is comparable to the energy of ten thousand exploding suns.

I gotta stop derailing threads like this. I don't even mean to most of the time.

It's gonna get me in trouble :D

I agree. I love me some ice cream sandwiches and couldn't even fathom a thread about disliking them.. then, to find out that this isn't about the confection at all.. *cries a manly tear*

OT though, that sounds like a lot of the same stuff you come across when any operating system on any device "upgrades." Half of the new features are buggy and the other half are "improvements" that weren't asked for in the first place. Probably bhest to wait for a patching update to see if anything gets fixed but there's generally not much you can do until then. Yay technology.

A lot of that sounds like issue with your phones otherlay rather than ice cream sandwhich itself (im experiencing none of those issues on sense 3.6 which is where my phones limited to :/)

Bad luck i guess.

Do you think maybe some of these issues have more to do with Touchwiz than ICS? I've heard good things about stock ICS and with HTC Sense

Woah woah woah wait a minute!

Flash support is gone? I'm literally just about to get a new Sony Ericcson Arc S to replace my iPhone 4 as the contract is up and one of the reasons I'm going Android is because of Flash support!

Can anyone else with an Android confirm this?

Not the most official of sources but...

Apparently you can download a flash app, but this hasn't made flash work in my browser i'm afraid. It may also be unique to the Galaxy S2 for now so check, but word on the street is that mobile flash is dying so android have decided to prepare for the second coming or something.

I don't mind the derail, just spoiler or snip out the images once they've been used once if you please :D

And sorry to disappoint. the ice cream sandwich was a lie...

If it is just a wonderful samsung idea then I'm just a bit unlucky and might consider rooting to purge some filth. But I know a lot of the advertised features such as face unlock, no flash, menu changes etc are a direct result of ICS.

A few bugs are to be expected but the wifi/3G thing, that's definitely a new bug since the update.

AGREED face unlocks stupid, but as of ten seconds ago i still have flash support lol.

As for wifi/3g issues, since im on unlimited data anyway (real unlimited not what americans get) iv never really used wifi unless im at home. So haven't encountered the issue as of yet.

flash is working on my sensation xe running on ics. It may be a brand specific issue.

I've been housebound for the last month due to injury so I've been on Wifi most of the time, but when I have left the house I've noticed the 3G doesn't switch automatically like it used to. I'd be interested in knowing if it is just a horrible bug that can be patched quickly.

I haven't tested it enough one way or another, maybe try your manufacturers support forums for similar problems, thats how i fix my stuff.

Best of luck.

Meh, at least you're not confined to Android 2.1 because the company that made your phone are refusing to update ANY of their phones.

I've been using the HTC Desire running android 2.2 for a little over a year now. It's been an okay experience, but I'm fairly certain I'll be heading for an iPhone next time I upgrade.

I like android, but it just seems very boring to me now, I want a phone that looks and feels engineered.

Well this isn't what I thought the thread would be about at all. But really, how could you hate an actual ice cream sandwich?

still better than apples hypepod

Mmmmmm. I think I'm gonna go get one of those.

Indeed. Because of this, I'm now going to buy some ice cream and...Bread, tomorrow.

What phone are you using? There's very probably a CyanogenMod release for it, and you can get yourself up-to-date and get a few new features on top of it.

I'd give anything to go back to gingerbread... But I know what you mean. ICS is apparently google trying to set a standard for future OS's to conform to so that the user experience is given time to be properly refined. There is a reason Apple hasn't buggered about with their OS too much over 7 or so versions of the iPhone.

With the amount of restriction on an Apple device I don't think I could go back. Perhaps I'll check out the Windows Phone 8 when my contract expires in a years time...

Oh no I am currently using one, but it would be nice not to jump through so many hoops because the company that makes my phone is lazy.

Well from my experience with the Arc (old one not s, although they are more or less the same), whenever theres been an update sony have always done decent testing, i've yet to run into bug yet and i've had the phone since release. My phone doesn't get ics till end of the month/early next month but i'm expecting everything will work perfectly as usual.

The Arc and Arc s are both decent phones so you won't be disappointed when you upgrade.
