Poll: What would you call middle age?

 Pages 1 2 NEXT

Having just turned 40 a couple days ago it got me to thinking, what do most people consider being middle age? I had a quick look on wikipedia for life expectancy and it comes up with a couple answers:

According to the UN it ranges from 82 to 75 (counting the top 50 countries) with an average of 67.2 globally
The CIA has a different range of 89 to 76 (counting the top 50 countries) with an average of 66.6 globally

Considering the life expectancy rates I figure it's in the 40s but it's all a matter of personal perception really (my wife thinks I act a quarter of my age some days).

I always thought middle age was 30s-50s.

Before that you are young and after it you are an old person.

I am only 22 now, so I'm sure my perspective will change in 5 or 6 years :P But I always thought of middle age as being somewhere in the 40's. I suppose with life expectancy going up and atuff it will change, but that just seemed about right to me.

I'd say about 40 to 60 is middle-aged, but I'm only 19 so take this with a pinch of salt.

For those that put the 30's ..... piss off.

We are still young.

YOUNG DAMMIT.

I don't know, 40-50?

Then again, I'm just a bratty 18 year old.

Whoa, who the hell put 30-34! D: Goddamn it, kids.

lol guys, check out the oldies over here. Shouldnt you guys be chasing kids off your lawn or something?

OT: 40-50 I guess, considering the average life expectancy and all.

Hey, I'm not 30 until June.

In my mind, middle age has always been the forties. Maybe the late thirties as well.
And the fifties, maybe.

I guess I'll say 35-55.
Middle age really isn't decided by the number of years you've lived. It's about how those years have treated you and how you act.

I'd say 45-55. You're likely past the half way mark but you're far from being old.

When you hit 40 you are no longer young.

Period.

30-50 is middle aged. I'm 36 and I am SURE AS HELL not "young" any more.

Didn't vote in the poll. Ranges are too small.

I assume it to be age 30-50. I mean you're not young anymore however you haven't gotten old enough.

I say anywhere from 35-37 to late 40's. A lot of it depends on other factors like how healthy your body is, or how you look. I mean I doubt a lot of people would call Brad Pitt an old man, but probably middleaged and he's only 48. And if you have kids, then you could say from the time they're in elementary school to when they graduate high school is "being middle-age"

You should know that these are the averages of people dying now in 2012. However people that are born now have a much higher life expectancy with an expected average of people born in the first world of 100 years.

So the middle age of older people was around 40 years however that of younger people will be closer to 50 years.

oh, I understand that.

The life expectancy averages have so many variables in them it's not even funny.

Sex, wealth, access to health care, quality of health care, occupation, genetics, world events (ie. war) and probably a hundred more variables come into play. I'm not a statistician by trade and can only draw an inference from what data I can find. That's why I put the CIA and UN numbers side by side since they can't even agree on a number based on the country.

I can speak for my own family (on my dad's side) in that we have no idea what age the male line goes to due to losses in both world wars. In my wife's case, the females lines tended to live for quite a few years but they all had health issues which complicated them.

Any way you look at it, its always a gamble that you hope to win (and win to enjoy the winnings)

From November on. Get offa mah lawn, you damn whippersnappers!

But how I feel sometimes? Every next year seems shorter to me somehow. As if time speeds up as you get older.

Anything 45+

40 isn't middle aged, its, how do I put this... the period of going INTO your middle age-ness.

40-ish to mid 50s, otherwise depends on the person.

I've always considered my parents to be middle aged. They're 50 now and I'm 19 so yea I guess that'd make it 30-60.

I don't use the term middle age... I just call anyone younger than me a kid and anyone older than me elderly ... lol

tho since the average lifespan is what around 70 I guess I'd have to call 35 middle aged... makes sense anyway

I would say 45-55. At 40 you aren't young anymore, but I don't think middle age just means not-young.

I am so annoyed now. I thought this would be a discussion about the Middle Ages 476 - 1485

darn....

Matthew94:

This is pretty much how I approach it. Through your twenties you're varying shades of young, and post 60 you're older than dirt, so everything in between seems fair as "middle-age".

That said, when someone is described as middle-aged, I picture early-mid 40s.

I'd say mid 40s to late 50s/early 60s.

Interesting coincidence I misread the title that way too.

Middle age is the time when you can't make your fucking mind up if you want to stay in and watch greys anatomy, or "get some chicks" at a club. It's different for everyone but I think a fair estimate (for all the early 30s people) would be late 30's to early 40s. y

A solution I would recommend? find a bar for people who realized they're old, you will look like "young meat"

Cookies for reference ;D

The brackets are not big enough. Middle age is a 10 to 20 year period.

Life expectancy going up? We must be living on different planets.

Plannin on living to your hundred and twenties ay? Good luck.

OT: My idea of middle aged is 35-45. Because 70's - 80's seems to be the average humans life span.

I don't think it's literally right middle of your life-time, at-least by my definition (obviously terms like these are largely social constructs) and I don't really feel like I can call anyone 59 or below "old" or "elderly". 35 seems very young from my POV for someone to be middle-aged.

It just makes sense for middle age to be the bracket in of time where you're literally in the middle of your expected life. 35-45 is just that.

Well I'd say roughly from the end of the 11th C. to the mid 16th C...

Oh right, well um, probably the half-way point of your life, considering human ages vary based on particular people and how we live its hard.

I'm saying 35-45, there's enough room in there to have some kind of crisis, you'll already have done all the fun stuff by this stage and you still have some hair so I'm putting that down for middle-aged..

Matthew94:

My thoughts exactly. I actually find the poll kind of funny in that it implies people are only middle aged for 3-5 years of their life.

45-50 ish
I'm 15 years old and I would say that is what I would class as middle age maybe a bit older, maybe 45 - 52/3
