Facebook irritates me their sh*te

 Pages 1 2 NEXT

Ahh how refreshing it is to wake up in the mornin' and not be able to access your 5 year old facebook account? Why would they do such a thing? Because they decided my (totally real) name, MG, is not a real name, and proceeded to force me to change my name. (Ironically now I had to use a fake name just to get into my dang account). Now I can't change it back and I hate facebook now because they are emotionally degrading me by teasing my name. I wonder if I can sue them for emotional damages? hmmm? Anyway yeah let us lay waste to the soon to be wasteland that is Facebook.
Please can someone tell me how to fix my name or where I could go to yell at the retards that work at facebook? A link or something?
P.S. I spelled facebook with a lower case because they don't deserve a cap.

...can't tell if troll or serious.

If troll: This is one horrible attempt at...whatever the fuck you're attemping.

If serious: Just make a new one. Problem solved.

Uh, your name is seriously "MG"? In all my years of living i've never seen a name like that. Its nothing personal but most websites don't except peoples names to just be two letters.

captcha: local derby. Yeah I guess you could do that too.

Ahh how refreshing it is to wake up in the morning and not have facebook and feel free.

-edit 300 post victory.

Your name is MG?
Dude, you need to join the army.

Never used social network sites. Don't see the point in them.

It's bad enough seeing the shit that appears there appear on sites I do use.

"Children are starving, like this if you want to feed them".....

Makes me want to kidnap Bill Gates until he makes a windows platform that allows me to reach through my monitor and choke stupid people.

Someone on our street started a Facebook petition to have our road fixed (it has pot holes)....

Don't bother talking to the council who deal with that .. oh no .. lets talk about it on a site that they will never see because that will surely help ....... morons.

DugMachine:

I know of a guy whose last name is one letter. Apparently he has some problems with that.

But Facebook is retarded. No wander I don't use it any more.

Man so much hate for Facebook. It's not some big brother thing that watches what you do every day and night people. You can just log off you know? And as for the "Like this if you..." just unsubscribe or defriend the people. Not that hard

Facebook has really just become a messaging system between me and the various friends I have who don't physically use anything else. Oh, and somewhere for me to verbally abuse mild acquaintances for the sake of my own amusement.

Thats funny I've always used a fake name for facebook, I don't have to deal with annoying family that way. It's not even a good fake name......

In all honesty, people complaining about Facebook really pisses me off. You have access to this site which allows you to socialise with any of your friends who are also on it, you can view pictures, videos, chat with people, have forum-like debates, and it's completely FREE. You don't have to use it if you don't want to, but don't call it 'stupid' just because it's not something you enjoy. It's like criticising Youtube, or public toilets.

@theparsonski I'm not complaining about Facebook as a whole, just the fact that they don't acknowledge odd names.

@Rastien LOL that was legend.

Yes I am serious, and that is my name. Haha maybe I'll change it to Fireprufe15 just to spite the whole Facebook fake name thing.

Well that can't be right. You're telling me that Facebook won't let me call myself Senor Koquonfaes?

If that really is your real name, you always have the option of sending them a copy of an identification document. You'll have to check around their FAQ for specifics.

But I agree in theory anyway, the rules on using a real name are bollox, I know a ton of people who don't and I see no problem with it. As long as you're not posing as someone else, I don't see how it's any of their damn business what your Facebook name is.

Facebook is awesome for organising and promoting events, keeping in contact with people and also lets you know useful information, like when tickets for the shows with the bands you like playing become available.
Also the 'facebook campaign' things are fairly really easy to just ignore.

Don't understand the hate.

Also I can see why they would think that name isn't real. I'm not entirely sure I believe it's real.

We all know thats not why they are really complaining. Their real reason is because they went on facebook and nobody accepted their friend requests.

I have to say something on this, because it totally is.

An image you upload is there forever. No if's, ands or Butts. If you delete the image, it will remain on FB's servers.
Once you make an account, or some other asshole makes an account for you, It is there forever. Again, no if's ands or butts, even if you "delete" it. You thought leaving WoW was bad..
Facebook uses cookies to track the sites you visit, and may automatically "like" things for you.
Facebook's web-based messenger pales in comparison to Steam's messaging service, or anything else out there that can or cannot be accessed by Astra/Trillian.
Know what else is a great way to organize events? Talking to that person! Pick up a fucking phone!
Someone who adds you as a friend gains total access to view your profile, even if you have not added them back, or have your profile set as private.
Nothing, on Facebook... is ever fucking private.
You cannot say no to Facebook, and it is a wonderful data-miner by demanding more personal information to keep your account "secure" and "private".

Facebook is a blight on people who want to keep to themselves, or only provide a little bit of information about themselves publicly. I don't want the whole world to know who I am, and if I don't want to be found, I want to remain hidden. Is that too much to ask?

Facebook will be dead in a few years. The inertia of large numbers of users is the only thing it has going for it, the service itself is crap. I'm not saying Google plus will take over the market, although that's a good bet. Personally, I hope people "wake up" a bit about privacy, and that in a few years the biggest social network will be free, open-source, and non-profit (like wikipedia). That is shitbook's biggest fear!

Well lets see:

1) I realize Facebook datamines the shit out of my information and tracks the sites I visit but i'm not going to the deep web and buying cocaine or some shit so i'm not really worried about them seeing me coming to The Escapist and watching yahtzee make dick jokes.

2) Not every one owns a phone, you realize this? I didn't own a phone for a few months that I lived in my apartment so calling them up sometimes isn't an option. Especially when you make MASS events like parties or group activities that require mass messaging etc (inb4 emailing).

3) Friends get total access to my account? Even IF I have it set to private? I don't get what you mean exactly by them getting "total access." Total access to what? A profile pic and a message that says "this profile is set to private, you must etc etc etc." Explain this point better because I don't understand your logic behind it.

4) Did you seriously just tell me to use STEAM, and I repeat, FUCKING STEAM, to message my many non gamer friends? Yeah, okay. I guess that makes sense?

I'm not some secret fucking agent, what the fuck do I care about Facebook looking at the type of music I like and my pictures of me, my girlfriend and my cat?

edit: Oh and the most important point; Just don't use the damn site if you're seriously THAT private. Nobody is forcing you to and my point is I don't get why people hate it so much because its 'big brother' or whatever tinfoil hat excuses they have for not using the website.

Simple solution: Don't use Facebook. It's horrible and there's no valid reason to use it. There's 91091308513099067934969219679139796497934965 alternatives to Facebook out there that don't fuck you over, inundate you with advertisements and ruin people's attention span.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how megacorps get about half of their power.

It's your private data. You should keep it hidden whether there's anything to hide or not. You should have more self-respect than that.

3)4) Did you seriously just tell me to use STEAM, and I repeat, FUCKING STEAM, to message my many non gamer friends? Yeah, okay. I guess that makes sense?

Hey it worked for me. Might even make a gamer out of them.

I'm not some secret fucking agent, what the fuck do I care about Facebook looking at the type of music I like and my pictures of me, my girlfriend and my cat?

The principle of it. You wouldn't let them rifle through your underwear drawer, so why are you letting them rifle through the virtual equivalent?

I don't get why people hate it so much because its 'big brother' or whatever tinfoil hat excuses they have for not using the website.

How can you not get it when they spell it out in language a three year old can understand? They don't like their privacy getting violated so they don't use facebook. It's that fucking simple. How can you not wrap your head around that?

I'd say, yes - Facebook do have some business ensuring the registrations are legit. But "I don't like your name" is not the best way to do it.

3) Again, fucking STEAM?! I love it but i'm not going to go and tell all my friends to download some gamer program they have no interest in just to talk to them.

4) Fine, I did word my post stupid and I infact know why you all hate it. But what I don't get is why y'all rage so hard whenever a facebook thread pops up and feel that its your life duty to tell us what brainwashed sheep we are for advancing this orwellian website. As if we're all ignorant to the truth and only you all in your tinfoil goodness can save us from the big bad government. /endrant

tldr: Use whatever websites you want, it's like whatever man.

edit: I'm not addressing any points in particular I just like ranting in bulleted form.

DugMachine:

Well his name is probably quite normal. like "John-Thomas" or "Eva-Joy". Except people probably call him MG for short and so he only uses MG for everything.

TestECull:

But... food-wrapper and stuff! Why won't they just conform? it's so convenient! They are hipsters that's what they are!

I'd like to say some things brought up in this thread.
Funded by commercials just means you, or somebody else paid for that when buying the product being advertised. But yeah enjoy the illusion of 'free' stuff.

Facebook harms more than your privacy, it hurts the structure of the internet. With all the event pages and whatnot you become more dependent on a single company whose allowed to control what gets out there and how. Just like record labels had full control of the music industry a while back (it still sort of does), you might become excluded simply for not wanting facebook to profit from your business, or facebook deciding what you do is not appropriate.

That's the way we're heading.

DugMachine:

1) I don't give a shit about them seeing the videos I watch on youtube and the escapist. Nor do I care if they see the porn I watch. I have fine taste so they can thank me.

You should. Allowing them to know what sites you visit is no different than letting them rifle through your bedroom closet.

I value my privacy. You obviously don't care. I don't suppose you'll mind PMing me your entire browser history though, seeing as you don't give a shit who knows everything about you and all.

2) And i'm not an old frail woman who falls and can't get up so i'm not too worried about calling ambulances or whatever.

So if your TV shorts out and sets the apartment on fire you'll telephathically phone the fire department? If someone breaks in and shoots you you'll just hope the neighbors heard it and called?

3) Again, fucking STEAM?! I love it but i'm not going to go and tell all my friends to download some gamer program they have no interest in just to talk to them.

Then get them interested in it. I showed my friend Garry's Mod, which required Steam. They were interested, downloaded steam, and bought it.

Now this person is a die-hard PC gamer. And my better half.

Gotta love Steam. <3

PM you what exactly? My name, email and that I love the Counting Crows and Arctic Monkeys, reading Edgar Allen Poe, and have an interest in video games? Okay copy/paste this right now and send it to big brother. I'm ready to be brainwashed.

And again with the steam shit, it's unrealistic to have the multiple non gamer friends of mine get Steam just to chat. Drop that point cause its just silly and you know it.

Not really a friend, just somebody I know of. And his name is Q. Which is worse than X but still kind of awesome, I guess. Also, I have no idea how he insists on pronouncing it. This could be very funny.

"Mister...Q [cue]?"

"No, sorry, you have the wrong man."

Facebook quibbling over a name is silly, at least to me. With all the billions of people in the world, the millions of possible users, what makes them think that there isn't some small chance that someone doesn't have a genuinely unusual name? Sadly, I don't know where to go to get your name changed back or even prove that a name well and truly is what you said it is. If all else fails, make a new account and use a nickname or something that fits your real name.

Just be glad that your parents didn't name you "Abcdef" when you were born. Oh, the trolling...

I want to give you points, I really do...

1. It's not just facebook that sees these things, it's everyone, and anyone who wants. When your friends post drunk pictures of you making lewd gestures while a woman reaches over you to get her drink(and they will!!), employers can potentially see that, and even though your actually a good guy, that'll forever tarnish their view of you.

Fuck most people, but there are few people out there that you actually want to think that your a good person, Even if your not.

2+3. My point still stands. Steam is an example, as it has in my opinion, a sub-par messenger with a perk... But you have also have YIM, MSNM, Skype, Astra, G-talk. Even if your friends use all of those, you have one application that can go across them.

Also, a Phone is an essential service. If you don't have one, that's your problem. I'm never 10 feet away from mine. Not because work could call, or something, but there are some places around where I'd like to have in case of an emergency. I'm very much all for Cellphones, I'll admit.

On top of this, if they really are your friend, you'd remain in contact. Well, maybe I'm hopeful, I know I wouldn't just keep them around as a statistic to pad your farmville score.

4. Going back far, I replied because of this, "And as for the "Like this if you..." just unsubscribe or defriend the people" With Facebook, it really isn't that easy.

I'm going to fast forward to where you asked, "Friends get total access to my account?" which is not what I stated at all, but here goes...

Both parties I'mma talk about, we'll call them L, and D has had their facebook set to private. Only friends can view their page. Miss L has friends who runs around and posts her pictures and wall posts publicly. (This is because she's a little out of it, but that's aside the point.) Mr. D is a good guy who also has his settings set to private, and keeps a tight knit circle of friends. He was shocked when he found his facebook also posted publicly. This occurred after a few people he never met tried to friend him. Furthermore, the option to say no is virtually non-existant to the average user, so he clicked "not now." For quite a while.

You may hold zero value to your privacy, but I don't. I don't want everything I do at all times to be out there available to the world. If I did, I'd be like you, and would probably be somewhat active on my deleted FB account. Allow me to reiterate.

I'd say, yes - Facebook do have some business ensuring the registrations are legit. But "I don't like your name" is not the best way to do it.

Bill someone via a Facebook account? What are you on about? When you're charging a service, you're doing so via a credit card or a PayPal account, both of which have/need your (checked and correct) full name and address. Facebook has absolutely nothing to do with billing.

I thought this was gonna be a rant on Facebook doing whatever Facebook does (Don't have one.)

Apparently you're ranting because they deleted your account? Wow. If this is a troll you've succeeded at annoying the shit out of me. Seriously man, kudos if so.

If not then stop freaking complaining over a stupid social network and get a real damn life.

Inb4 I get warned for this post.

Bad example, OK, it doesn't invalidate everything I said. Try sending somebody their prize, then. Point is - Facebook info can be linked to a lot of non-Facebook stuff. Some applications would rely on it being at least somewhat reliable.
