I'm quite a big fan of this

My old band ripped off this version for a school talent show we took part in years ago, and everyone thought we were awesome for thinking of doing it like that!

Mwua ha ha ha

Mad World, I love the Gary Jules version, but I've heard others that were great too. I mean there's a ton of people who have covered this.

Amazing how Shatner gives this song so much more emotion than the original.

Other's I would mention have been said (most multiple times)
Jonny Cash - Hurt
AAF - Smooth Criminal
Most of the covers I know from Real Big Fish (Kiss Me Deadly above the others)

No links/videos but Pendulum does a pretty good remix (does that count?) of Prodigy's "Voodoo People." Also the Nirvana cover of "Man Who Sold the World".

The Birds originally did this song, even though most people credit the doobie brothers with it, But I like this version better.

Opeth's cover of Celtic Frost's "Circle of the Tyrants" is the first thing to come to my mind.

I always thought the Streetlight Manifesto cover of Such Great Heights by The Postal Service was superior. That might be because I vehemently dislike Ben Gibbard, though. <_<

Also, I was always much more fond of Mumford and Sons' cover of Unfinished Business by White Lies.

Swyftstar:
I really liked Peter Gabriel's cover of The Book of Love by The Magnetic Fields.

The Airborne Toxic Event had a realy good version of it too. They also covered Goodbye Horses(the song that Buffalo Bill danced to in Silence Of The Lambs).

The Radar Love cover by OMEN that I seem to be unable to find on youtube for some reason. You might remember it from that Simpsons episode.
In the original Golden Earring song I just miss the guitar riffs between lines.

No time to read through 3 pages right now so just in case they've been missed:
H2O's Like a Prayer
IDK's 99 Red Balloons
1000 Homo DJs' Supernaut
Eric Clapton's I shot the Sheriff
Jimi Hendrix's Like a Rolling Stone

Yeah yeah, Dylan was awesome but Hendrix was a fucking GOD.

Andy Shandy:

Jonluw:
I know I might be lynched for suggesting that a cover can be better than the original version of this song, but I think it's better, god damn it.

How dare you! Which reminds me...

That was awesome.

For me:

Sorry guys, I just prefer the increased tempo of this version to the original.

I really like Aerosmith's cover of "come together" although I think I still prefer the original Beatles version, so I guess that doesn't count.

"We're not going to take it" cover by Quiet Riot.

+1 Turisas
Alestorm's cover of I Am A Cider Drinker by the Wurzels
Marilyn Manson's cover of You're So Vain from the new album
Emily Browning's version of Sweet Dreams from Sucker Punch

I submit bluegrass covers courtesy of The Punch Brothers:

VonKlaw:

Because who really likes Boney M?

Beastly song! These were the first guys I ever saw live.

I really like Yardbirds cover of Too Much Monkey Business by Chuck Berry.

Also...

RHCP - Love Rollercoaster (The Ohio Players)
Marcus Miller - Come Together (The Beatles)
Devin Townsend - Sinner (Judas Priest)
Fear Factory - Dog Day Sunrise (Head Of David)
Black Sabbath - Warning AND Evil Woman (Aynsley Dunbar and Crow)
Iron Maiden - Communication Breakdown (Led Zepplin)
(Not Better than the originalbut still pretty good) Metallica - Am I Evil (Diamond Head)

As much as I love Tom Waits, I'm going to have to say that I like the Robert Plant + Alison Krauss version of Trampled Rose way better than his original.

Such an easy choice.

My Favorite Cover is Death's cover of painkiller
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aQXt61Hfks
and Nevermore cover of the sound of silence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5UDamMen7I
i like these cover cause the bands made them their own songs with all their own style

One of the better STP songs, better than the Bowie version

I like Sonata Arctica's cover of "Die With Your Boots On" more than the original.

Also Disturbed's covers of "Land of Confusion" (although to be fair I don't really even like their version much lol) and "Living After Midnight".

Anberlin and Lunata Coil's covers of "Enjoy the Silence". It's actually a case where I HATE the original XD

Can't think of others although I know there are more... And too lazy to post youtube videos, look 'em up yourselves!

VonKlaw:

Because who really likes Boney M?

I'm fairly sure they've done it, at least were inspired to, from a well-known Finnish cover of Rasputin, although this is in English.

But the international popularity of Finnish metal bands never seizes to amaze me.

I don't agree about Nevermore's version being "better", but it's brilliant, as is pretty much everything Nevermore wrote.
Death's cover of Painkiller, however, blows the original out of the water if you ask me.

OT:
Jesse Cook's version of Fall At Your Feet. (original by Crowded House)

I can't stand the original. I have yet to encounter a single occasion where people didn't call me a flaming imbecile for thinking so, but I think the singing in the original version is mediocre at best.

Blind Guardian's version of Beyond the Realms of Death (Original by Judas Priest)

It's the same as my earlier example, but I think Hansi just DESTROYS Halford.
Blind Guardian also made a cover of Queen's Spread Your Wings, which also annihilates the original.

Streetlight Manifesto's version of Such Great Heights (original by The Postal Service)

As with Fall At Your Feet, the original blows, but is vastly improved by SM.

I'm fairly sure I'm on several people's death list now, so I'll spare you further examples.
Besides, this post is becoming fairly large by now.

Damn you! I was going to say that!
But I agree, I much prefer the up tempo version over the original.

Andy Shandy:

My god...just...I'd forgotten how epic Johnny Cash's voice was.

DAMN! Ninja'd.

Johnny Cash truly has an epic voice :)

*sigh*

*Raises flame shield*

I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry.

Quite a few actually. First that comes to my mind is the cover, or not exactly a cover, of "Land of Confusion"-Genesis, performed by Alcazar with the title "This Is The World We Live In". Second is "I only Wanna Be With You" by Samantha Fox, the original was sung by Dustie Springfield.

Korn - Another Brick In The Wall:

It just has more 'energy' that fits the song better.
Though, to be fair, Pink Floyd's version works better when you listen to the WHOLE album.
.
.
.
Ozzy - In My Life:

Original is okay, but Ozzy just NAILS this song so much better.
.
.
.
Ozzy - Stayin' Alive

Not a huge fan of the Beegees so it probably has more to do with 'meh' to the original than anything.
.
.
.
Ozzy Osbourne feat. Miss Piggy - Born to be Wild:

I have to admit part of my love for this version is the comedic aspect of it.
.
.
.
Megadeth - Paranoid:

While the original is clearly a classic, I do enjoy the 'power' behind this cover more.
.
.
.
Yoko Kanno - Madame Butterfly

This is more or less just an excuse to post something by Yoko Kanno.
>_>

This is a wonderful cover of Rolling Girl by Hatsune Miku. This version features Akiakane.

Lizzy's cover of 'Rosalie', by Bob Seger. Also, I must respectfully disagree with any who say Metallica do a better job than Thin Lizzy on 'Whiskey in the Jar'.

Incidentally, what is up with the Escapist's video embedding? Not a single video works.

Ensiferum covered Battery, and that was tons better than what Metallica made of it.

Also Behemoth covered Untill you Call on the Dark by Danzig, which was pretty good, and when I looked up the original it was more like uninspired weak progrock. It amazed me of what Behemoth turned the song into.

Cover:

Original

Northern Kings' covers are all endless fun.

My Way - Frank Sinatra (1969)

I Should Be So Lucky - Kylie Minogue (1987)

The only one I can think of right now is Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt.

HHammond:
*sigh*

*Raises flame shield*

I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry.

Fixed the Youtube embedding for you dude, and also good choice, maybe not better than the original but almost as good.

My preference.

Original.

Blasphemous! Both are dope, but I have a stronger preference for soul music.
