Okay, The poll is broken, Sorry about that

What's everybody's thoughts on The Sex Pistols?

Because I was reading about them earlier, and it occurred to me that I've never actually listened to them properly before, so I decided to have a listen to some of their stuff. It's actually pretty hard to sum up my thoughts on their music, on one hand, I absolutely hate the sound, mainly because of the singer..It sounds awful, but for some reason, I find his voice to be extremely relaxing in the most horrible of ways...So it got me thinking.

What do my buddies on The Escapist think? Do you like their music? Do you despise their music? Do you think they hold a vital place in music? Would you rather they kept on making music? Or would you have preferred they never existed at all?

My dad is a massive fan, so I was brought up on them.
My opinion on them is the same one I have for Nirvana and other such bands. I appreciate what they did for their genre, but don't necessarily enjoy their songs.

They're pretty good I guess. Prefer The Clash and The Ramones myself.

Poll is broken.

Regardless, dont like em. Dont like punk/alternative in general at all.

I dont know

never heard them

I generally dont like any "old and well loved" band...except for Queen..Queen are fucking awsome

Blech. I love punk (and especially old school punk), but hate The Sex Pistols. A bunch of colossal douchebags with a manufactured image.

Give me Minutemen, Fugazi, or Hukser Du any day. And for recent punk, I love Ted Leo (and his various groups), No Age, and Fucked Up.

They're alright, but I suspect the praise upon them has less to do with the music itself (not that they didn't have any influence on music at all) than it did with the image. Not helped that the critics who like them have penned some of the most pretentious, condescending and flat out whiny articles I have ever seen.

Personally, I think Frank Zappa did the whole "**** the system" routine better than the Pistols ever did.

I enjoy them quite a bit actually. But maybe because I was big into the punk scene when I was younger.

You've probably heard them. Maybe one of their more overplayed songs?

cant watch vid right now..mabye

I know Ive head "of them" just not any of their stuff...or at least if I have I wouldnt know

Their importance is that they were afwul and most of them had no idea how to play their instruments, and yet the became absurdly popular within the punk scene. So yeah, they played a vital role and they're awful. I don't listen to them but I acknowledge their importance.

Couldn't agree more. The Clash did political statements better and the Ramones did the goofy counter-culture posturing better. Plus they popularized the snotty brat attitude that influences most of my least favorite punk music.

The Sex Pistols were named after Sex, which was some edgy clothing store, and they added the pistols part just to try and sound dangerous. Image was a great part of their appeal, but that part was very much of an era, and once that image has faded, their music can't stand up to the convinction in the voice of Joe Strummer or Ian Mackaye, or the musical inventiveness of Television or the Minutemen. And even with that, their image looks foolish when Bob Mould can rock harder wearing a polo shirt just a few years later.

And I'd just like to add that that is an excellent selection of bands there, every one of them.

I fucking love the Sex Pistols. Yeah, they're dicks, and their music is rather unfocused, but if that isn't what punk music is all about (aside from the anarchic lyrics), then I don't know what it is. Fucking hate Sid Vicious though.

<gags> Everything I've heard from them has been unfocused dreck. The fact that the band members are tools is the icing on the dung cake.

I never latched onto the punk scene anyhow. Give me electronic and Trip-Hop any day.

I was familiar with them, but had never really listened to them before now. I couldn't get through an entire song. The sound made me feel like someone was taking sandpaper q-tips and shoving them straight into my eardrums

I'm not really into Punk so no I don't like the Sex Pistols. I'm more of a rock/metal guy in those set of genres.

They definitely contributed to music as a whole, but as a band, they are unmitigated shit.

Dead Kennedys are underrated.

I've heard of the name before because who can forget a stupid name like Sex Pistols? *rolls eyes* but I haven't heard any of their songs.

To be honest I can't stand all those "BACK EN MAH DAY!!!" bands that everyone loves so much. Everyone has a different taste in music, and I shouldn't have to respect anyone based on an older generations nostalgia. There is but one exception.

Elvis. I love me some Elvis.

I've listened to Anarchy in the UK and know about Sid Vicious, aside from that not much to say. I guess their sound isn't bad (despite my appreciation for vocals getting in the way of appreciating their music), but I've never really been big on that punky sort of music.

They are a fun punk band, but rub me the wrong way by pretending to be anarchists while being just a premade boy band.

They're...meh at best. At worst, they're a horrible band.

I don't believe they play a vital role at all, but I reckon they're alright. At the moment, there is only 3 songs I like of theirs.

Where's the "I don't listen to them, and don't really care about them." option?

Rage Against the Machine did a better job than he. So over all if you want a "fuck the system" sort of band, ignore the Sex Pistols.

They were the most popular Punk band at the time, but compared to all the other Punk bands that were around England at the time, their sound was kinda pedestrian, Juvenile, and not as interesting.

X-Ray Spex was a much better Punk band from that era. This was back in the time when Women didn't give a fuck about what people think, and they just wanted to be Punks, and to rock out like all the Men did.

Also, I'm a huge fan of Post-Punk, Joy Division is better than all the punk bands put together in my honest opinion.

The Sex Pistols are overglamified rejects.

The Ramones all the way!

I really, really don't like them. Talentless, manufactured hacks exploiting controversy in order to gain more fame and riches - not one of their sentiments was in any way genuine. To top it off, I don't even like the genre they were trying to imitate anyway (punk rock doesn't do it for me, 'fraid).

Yeah they go alright. Not really my style but they're a lot better than a lot of the crap out there. If we're looking in that pool of talent, I prefer The Clash myself.

I agree 100%, but the Sex Pistols did play a pivotal role in music. Also, what is your favorite Clash song?

I don't really think they were all that important, there were a crapload of punk bands around doing a similar thing. Still, I quite like them, but on my list of favourite punk bands they don't really come close to the top. Social Distortion, Bad Religion and NOFX are probably my favourites there.

My music collection has tons of Early/Mid era Punk and only one dust covered copy of Nevermind the Bollocks that never gets taken out of it's case.

I put the Sex Pistols in the same category as Elvis and Nirvana.

Yeah they played an integral part of legitimizing/introducing their respective musical genres and in changing the face of popular music.

But I don't like 'em that much and there were other musicians within their genre who were performing much better music at the time.

I've heard of the Sex Pistols, but I have not listened to any of their music.

1. I'll probably check em out. See if they can influence my sound.
2. I don't know yet.
3. See #2.
4. Haven't they been around for a while? If they made some classic material, I would say yes.
5. Sure, why not?
6. That's not nice. Why would I think that? Because I do not like their music? Assuming if I do not like their music, other people may love their music. It would be very arrogant of me to not wish of their existence simply because they do not appeal to my tastes!

I don't really like them, but I can't ignore the fact that they were one of the bands that pretty much started the punk movement.

I'm not a big fan of punk in general though.

"Anarchy in the UK" - This video has been blocked in your country (I'm from the UK)...brilliant.

OT: Not heard of them, but I don't listen to music outside soundtracks so...

I got that too. Couldn't help but laugh at the multiple levels of irony.

I listened to them when I was about 14 and tried to convince myself that I liked them but it's jut not my style really. I also thought I could totally understand their message but being a 90's, financially stable kid I just couldn't, no matter how angsty I was.
