Poll: Milk

...they color-code your milk over there? Wow. Cap colors just mean different brands here, as far as I know.

I could be wrong though, I've been drinking coconut milk for years. Beats cow milk at its own game, and I prefer the taste.

...my roommate uses half and half (you may know it by its more accurate nomenclature: half cream) for coffee, though. So I guess I buy that once in awhile.

Aris Khandr:
Also, have you ever had chocolate skim? Eww!

Chocolate skim?? That sounds HORRIBLE. I hope I never encounter such a thing.

OT: Semi skimmed milk for me (1% milk for my fellow Americans). I used to drink whole milk, but I drink a lot of milk on a daily basis. So, I figured I'd cut out a little saturated fat. But man, after drinking low fat milk for so long, whole milk tastes like heaven in a glass.

I try to buy 2% (the cap color varies depending on what store you get it from and what company makes is), but sometimes the store I'm at doesn't have it. Doesn't help that the boyfriend always buys whole and the roomies buy terrible organic milk and almond milk.

I usually get green cap, sometimes blue if I'm feeling daring. But I recently found Alpro/Provamel Hazelnut which is delicious on cereal and doesn't go off all the bloody time!

But there's none to buy where I live so I've been going without any form of lactose product/replacement

I really dislike milk unless it is flavored (e.g. chocolate or strawberry), however that is unhealthy (I am trying to lose weight) so I do not buy milk unless it is to cook with.

I haven't had milk since I was 18...

It's almond milk for me, baby. ;)

Green cap because I don't get the choice
But I'd personally go for green/blue anyhow

I've been across the whole spectrum. I drank whole milk religiously as a kid, then switched to skimmed when I went on a health binge and then settled permanently on semi-skinned several years later.

So I've had my fair share of all three ME3 ending coloured caps.

I get 2%. If someone gives me skim milk I do not drink it. If I wanted water w/ food coloring I would have just asked for that.

1% Milk.
Skimmed tastes awful to me.
2% tastes ok...

Whole milk.
All the time.
Whole milk for days.

Living on res at uni, I obviously buy groceries just for myself. So you can understand how much milk takes up a part of my diet when I say I have to buy ~6 litres a week to keep up. :P

I do personally think it tastes better too, in tea, coffee, cereal, anything milk is used in (I even use whole in my pasta recipes that call for milk >_> ). Semi-skim or skim milk tastes like water to me when compared with whole milk...

I only drink red cap. Skim milk is better for me because of issues i have been having with cholesterol. It tasted funny at first, but within a week i got used to it and now i don't see a difference.

Skim and semi skim mild are healthier because they have less saturated fat, but i see it as a personal choice.

I get the 1%, which has a blue cap.

Semi for drinking and whole for cooking. And sometimes almond milk cause its pretty tasty. As for skimmed milk, I'll always remember my dad and I both tried skimmed milk together when I was maybe 8 years old cause my mom wanted to see if we would like the healthier stuff. Anyways we both took a big gulp and instantly we both ran for the sink and started spitting it out and rinsing our mouths with water, lol. My taste buds have changed a bit since then and I dont mind skimmed just rather have something else but that story always brings a smile to my face cause I dont have many good father moments.

Up here in Canada, in Dairyland milk, orange-cap is whole, red/pink-cap is partly skimmed, purple-cap is more skimmed and green-cap is totally skimmed. Unless you buy a different brand, like Beatrice, and then the more skimmed is blue-cap instead of purple. The exception to this was when Dairyland decided to be lulzy and make skim blue-cap for a while. In retaliation, Beatrice made equivalent cartons and put the Omega-3 infused whole milk in a pink carton and the whole organic milk in a green carton. Then they put buttermilk in an orange carton right beside the normal whole milk and wrecked many people's cereal. Dairyland then decided to sell their buttermilk as well in yet another green carton. Then they restandardized skimmed milk and changed the boxes to teal.

The lessons to be gained from here:

1. Don't refer to your milk by cap color.
2. Canada has a LOT of different milks.
3. Working in a grocery store has driven me insane.

OT. Skimmed. I cannot tell the difference between skim, 1%, 2% or 3.5%, so I just drink the one with the least amount of fat.

It's like chocolate milk... but with a stigma of being "healthier".

Then again, I cannot tell one milk from another, so what do I know.

You poll most likely only covers the UK. It was good that you added names to the caps, because caps are different in the US.

This is cap colors, in the US, at least in my area.

Blue: 2%

Green: 1%

Light Blue: Skim(we don't say skimmed, plus it is the only kind labeled skim).

Red: Vitamin D fortified milk, which isn't considered Whole Milk where I am.

And whole milk: Don't know the color because the only Whole Milk I have seen is sold in cartons not jugs.

Soy milk is also only sold in cartons, so no color.

But it all really doesn't matter with color, because different jug brands use different colors.

For my response, I drink 2% milk.

Came in (as I'm sure many did) to post this because it was very confusing to me as well. As to answer the question I usually buy 1-2% for all-purpose milk usage. Don't really notice much difference from 1% to 2% but skim is just too watery for most things.

...Here in Canada,we get our milk in bags...I get 2%.

Why do people always say that? I have been all across the country in every conceivable super market or family corner store and have never, ever, ever seen... a bag of milk. Where the fifle-fluff do you get yours?

You can't have been over all the country if you've never seen bagged milk.

It used to be available across Canada as the standard delivery method. It's still popular in the Maritimes, Ontario and Quebec. Out west its mostly been replaced with 4L jugs.

Yorkton, Quebec City, Halifax, Saint Johns, Montreal, Fredericton, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, kindersley, Tisdale, Charlottetown, Estevan, Victoria, and Vancouver.

Nope, have not been all over the country.

I have been in all of these towns and cities from 1-7 days and I am one of those nuts who likes to browse stores (even grocery stores) without buying anything so I get around the town but I have never seen a bag of milk, always four liter jugs. I swear to God that I do not even know what a bag looks like. I could Google it in a couple-o-seconds but that would sort of spoil the surprise, it could not be conceivably possible to miss a bag of milk even if you do not know what it looks like.

So rather than sound snarkish which is not my intent, name one store that carries bagged milk so I can take a look.

I'm assuming that 1 and 2% count as semi-skimmed (never heard that before in the states (silly us I know)) so that's what I went with. That and cap color can change based on the brand of milk so that was no help. Pretty sure my 2% milk has a blue cap right now.

dark blue top whole milk when i cant get silver top whis most of the time silver top is almost fresh out of the cow just pasteurised so it often has cream floating on the top yummy :D

My aunt and uncle like in Greely, by Ottawa... all their milk is bagged. There's a Sobeys close by where they live where all the milk is bagged.

Made me give a triple-take.

seriously, if you spend 7 days in montreal and did not se a bag of milk, i dont know in what kind of store you went because the 4l is always in bags...

i drink 1% myself. i cannot stand skimmed and 3.25% is way to fat for me

Sonic Doctor:
Red: Vitamin D fortified milk, which isn't considered Whole Milk where I am.

Seriously? In Canada, all of our milk is fortified with 45% DV per cup, regardless of fat content or other pretense. They sell it separately down there?

No, I did not spend 7 days in Monreal, I spent 2 because my flight was delayed. I was in Sobeys, Super Store, Zellers, and a random corner store. Never saw a bag (this was about 11 months ago). Maybe I just went to the wrong ones, maybe they were out of stock, maybe these retail chains do not carry them anymore, I don'know. I reall don'know. Oh and I agree with you on the 1%.

Just went to the fridge to check. It is 2% and says it has 37% less fat than Vitamin D milk. On the nutrition facts, it says it only has 25% vitamin D per serving.

Pictures of 2% and the D Milk to show it is separate.

These are smaller sizes because, the writing is easy to read then the jug picture's I found.

(Edit: I didn't notice that the labeling on my 2% milk is different than the 2% in the picture. It says 37% less fat than regular milk, while mine says 37% less fat then Vitamin D milk. Same brand, different label.)

I like to drink my milk knowing that the cow most likely experienced slight degrees of sexual pleasure in releasing their contents.

I go for whole, so the red cartons. (It's 3.5%, used to be 3.9%)

You can even decide from WHERE in Norway you want your milk to come from :P
image
(from left to right: south, mid-norway, east, vest or north)

I'm also a bit surprised as to colouring just the caps, and putting the skimmed as red... (no vote from me, poll! Stop with the shenanigans!)

I drink whole milk.

If I ever want milk in my coffee, which is rare, I use 2%. I'll drink 2% too, if it's all that's available, but I prefer whole milk.

Skim milk is terrible. I will never drink it, and I will never put it in my other drinks. It's a disgrace to all milk everywhere, and should have never been made in the first place.

Well you listed Toronto, where I live, and EVERY store sells 4L milk in bags if they sell milk. All the main grocery chains (Loblaw, Metro, Sobey's, Longos, etc), the gas stations with attached stores (Petrocanada, Esso), and all the convenience stores I've ever been in.

In fact the only places I've seen 4L milk in jugs in Ontario are Mac's milk stores (that have their own 4L brand, of course they also carry name brand 4L bags) and some kosher stores that import their milk from the US.

I have no idea what any of that means, we use percentages here. I drink 1.6% and put 3.8% in tea.

I drink skimmed, less fat in it

Semi Skimmed Master Race.

Bonus points if Cravendale.

Semi skimmed for me

Although chocolate soy milk is the bomb

I drink skimmed (white cap for me). I've tried the others, and I just don't like the taste of them, whole milk I only like when its for chocolate milk, while semi-skimmed I can't stand the taste at all.

Im confused by the colors, in sweden the red i whole, the green/blue is semi and the blue/yellow is skimmed. (not sure if the blue one is classed semi or skimmed)
but anyways i usually drink semi or whole if i have any. Whole tastes better but semi works just fine.
