I guess people just like to complain. I don't really get it, when it comes to those topics(gaming ones) I don't really hate anything, it's just so inconsequential. I play games, I enjoy them, I mostly forget about the ones I don't like and while playing I try to ignore the bad aspects so by the end I kind of forget until someone mentions them and I'm like "Oh yeah that was kind of annoying". Or if I think back specifically. And games I don't like I don't play and don't think about. As for everyone's health, well I doubt they're foaming at the mouth raging. Probably a more easily forgotten anger, simply exaggerated for the most part. At least I'd hope so. Though as I'm sure you've noticed, some of those threads are about the hating they see going on. Which is actually kind of like this one.
I personally would like more light-hearted threads, but those usually don't last long due to "NO DISKUSHUN VALUE". People like to argue I guess. The problem I see with it is that most of the time people are just regurgitating information everyone already knows. YES. WE ALL HATE EA AND CALL OF DUTY. We know its been posted before and you want to post your view on the subject, but its the same view!!!! ITS THE SAME THING!!!! WE KNOW THIS ALREADY!!!! The next problem is people that have no idea what an OPINION is when it comes to "the worst ____ game of all time" Somebody hates a game you like? They're a retard. Someone likes a game you hate? They're a dumbass. Insert 10 pages of name calling and one-upping. Everyone needs to take breaks from forums every now and again to make sure they aren't getting too worked up. Take 5 minutes to stretch your legs and eat something. Or just don't go to thread you know are going to turn you into a spamming troll for the next few hours.
I'm going with "other" as the word hate on these forums usually just means a strong dislike, not actual "I will burn down the company that made this" hate
True that, yet those 'Why does X get so much hate?' threads only tend to focus on one thing due to the fact the OP of that thread believes ether: A) That game/movie/book/subject doesn't deserve the hate. B) The OP likes the game, thus wish for people to stop hating it. C) Tired of seeing people bashing the game due to hate. D) All of the above. This thread is just asking you guys if hate is really worth expressing, and if you are obsessed with hatred overall. I can see I only added yet another topic to hate itself but I only made this thread because the 'hate topic' on threads is rising. Maybe a bit to much, but that's just my prospective on things. Feel free to say otherwise my friend.
People like to have something to gripe about, it's therapeutic and relieves stress. Also why s there no "I hate you" option, I hate this poll.
Fair enough, they do tend to be more about how they're tired of that hate or think it's unfair. And I'm not sure if they're rising. There was a sharp rise with ME3 and I don't think it's risen from *that* level. Actually it's probably gone down from that. Could just be that after that it's more easy to notice the hating threads since that fiasco brought them more to our attention. I'm not sure really.
I never say the h word. I love everything (within reason). I agree with you that their are too many hate and repeat threads, instead of crazy and original joke threads. Oh well, such is life on the Escapist.
The first option of the poll has a 'including you' part meaning you hate me along with everything but perhaps you don't hate everything which is to say I would of made a 'hate you' option in the poll but knowing people hating me would only make me sad. Does that make sense? (lol sorry if this joke seems to stretched)
I'm alright with threads if the OP feels strongly against something, but the way everyone throws around the word 'hate' now a days..
| |
I think it's bad but yet again it's probably better to vent it out than to keep it lock in within you.
Well in my opinion hate just gets thrown about. And while yes there are plenty more threads about "hate", you have to consider that this is a very large community. Not saying you're not right to notice, just that at the same time, you start looking for something, you're gonna notice it. I don't think it's bad. People like to get things off their chest and for the most part this is a fairly respectful community. Yes, we have our assholes, but we usually are quick to call them out on their shit and eventually they end up getting kicked out if they keep it up. So I think we're good. I often get angry about stuff in the forums, but I try to just leave it be. Heck most of the time I won't even argue with people. If I post and someone quotes me and tell me just how "WRONG!" I absolutely positively totally have to be or else I've destroyed their world-view and life....I just roll my eyes and go about my business. Also OP, love your avatar and the Dr. Cox video.
Well it's just a counter point to what people love, really. You'll see a thread going: "Best Leader of your Country." And now there's a thread called "Worst leader of your country." It's human nature to know an opinion. Regardless of whether it goes against your own. It's universally agreed here that CoD is hated, though without solid reasons. So why bother making a thread professing your love for CoD when it's common knowledge that it's actually considered as a controversial opinion and will be shot be down faster than you can say 'Bob's your uncle.'? And there's the wonderful hive mind thing going on here. 'Oh a popular user likes this! I must too!' Contrary to popular belief, more often than not, if your opinion doesn't match to that of a group/user, you're deemed a simpleton and shouted down upon. =\
People tend to use forums to vent their anger and annoyances in a way they can't do in real life.
I hate this thread... hurr hurr hurr. Nah, people just throw the word around a lot. I doubt there a more than a handful of people who actually experience the sensation of genuine, violent, seething hatred when discussing the latest Call of Duty or whatnot.
Well do I really hate things like this as much as the word hate truly means? No, I really don't and that is being perfectly honest but dislike doesn't describe my stance enough. To be honest, it is not that much compared to some other days here. I am not obsessed with it myself but if someone asks about say CoD: BO, I have to say how I feel. I will state my displeasure at the steaming pile it was when I attempted to enjoy myself while playing it.
Aye. Let them come back in five years, and if they still feel the irrepressible urge to kill puppies and bunnies whenever <X> is mentioned we can chalk it up as "hate". Before that it's just forum drama.
Hate? You keep using that word, I don't think it means what you think it means.
Dislikers gonna dislike just doesn't have the same ring to it.
Yes, hatred is at the core of my very existence. Also, it's fun.
Oh i just hate the haters. And some other stuff... ocasionally.
We're just a bunch of moany bastards I guess. We even moan about other people's moaning and it gets all meta.
Hate, hate, hate, makes the world go round!
Of course people hate things. They're not me. And being me is awesome.
I make love, not Warcraft Peace, out man. Maybe some people just are not very good at putting their thoughts and feelings into words and say "hate" instead man, but y'know, that is part of their journey too.
Forums are an outlet. Sometimes you just gotta blow off steam and find other people that feel the same way you do. Sometimes by blowing off steam, you actually get a chance to read other viewpoints and just maybe have your own swayed and not hate whatever it is that put the bug up there in the first place. :)
Well, I think I can finally post this now. Some truth in those lyrics, if I may say so, and really, wouldn't it be boring if we were all lovey-dovey about stuff?
In practice 'hate' usually turns out to mean unfounded dislike. Just like MLP, one of the things people seem to have taken over from 12 year old girls. But where MLP is usually harmless, all this 'hating' is plain annoying.
Other- No. A lot of people here generalise and assume way too much. Every time I go into a thread asking "why the complaints against this", there will be reasonable people explaining why and other people ignoring the topic and good reply's and just say that all those who have something against whatever game just like to hate things. These people are assholes. I'm sure there are people here that prefer to talk about things they hate (and of course the occasional douchebags), but the amount of labeling and generalisations in The Escapist is fucking ridiculous. Also the word hate in thread titles is just the easiest too describe what they want to discuss. It probably is more popular to venture in the negative side. You don't see any big news stations just talking about happy positive things around the world. I don't see it in Australia any way. But my point is, obsessed is a poor word to use, and those people that seem hateful are really just disappointed with the crappy products sold to them.
The internet, being populated mainly by psychologically broken men in their mid 20's, is an extremely cynical and negative place.
You're on the internet hate machine, not to mention in real life you can't always let out your hate so it's a good place to vent your rage.
Everyone is capable of hate, but not everyone feels the need to hate on forms of entertainment. Example, I disliked the ME3 ending, and disliked the fact that the prothean story line required that you pay an additional ten bucks to play even more. And I got rather mad that people who objected, not to the artistic vision, but to the fundamental failings of the story as it was constructed and executed were being called entitled whiners. But I never got hateful over it. Hate is something best reserved for acts that scar you till the day you die.
It's not just the Escapist, it's the whole goddamn Internet. It's rather depressing really.
Use your aggressive feelings, boy. Let the hate flow through you. I've noticed that hating the "wrong" things is, for whatever reason, more socially acceptable than enjoying the "wrong" things.
I'm neutral in all this, each to there own and all that good stuff.
Yeah, that's how the internet works. Not only just people on it, but because of the dynamics of it, the internet is a massive, self-sustaining and endlessly replicating engine of hate. If you dislike something and go on the internet, you end up hating it. If you're neutral toward something that the majority of the internet hates, you end up hating it. If you hate something, you end up hating it even more. If you like something and you're impressionable, you end up hating it. If you don't know what something is but the majority of the internet hates it, you end up hating it. It's just a big ugly mess of group dynamics and irrationality.

This doesn't apply to everyone, due to the fact most of the members and especially the staff are the loving sort of people. However, though hatred is a common thing to see on here when revolving around the actions of a gaming company or debates at hand- the hatred has risen. For example, every now and again there's a thread about hate. For a few hours.. there was a whole row of threads relating to hate.
Thread Examples on Hate in May 2012:
Why the hate for Black Ops?
Why I hate Bioware...
Poll: Your favorite game that everyone hates
multi-player games you hate the most?
Hating on the Mass Effect community (lot of threads on ME3 and hating it of course)
Why does call of duty get so much hate? (related to Black Ops thread)
Say one good thing about a game you hate the most
Poll: Dear EA, I hate you
I hate paying for Indie Games
The list goes on actually. Is this level of hate a bad thing, or do you think it's better for the sake of everyone's health? Why or why not? Do you yourself feel obsessed with hatred which you feel is good to express? Wish to know, just out of curiosity.
