Poll: So Escapists, Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, which do you prefer?

 Pages 1 2 3 NEXT

This is a very simple question, which do you prefer, the Lord of the Rings or Star Wars? As a side note, I'd like to get a tally on it, just because it would be interesting to note.

Lord of the Rings. Loved all 3 of them.Of course I never watched a Star Wars film so its the only option I can choose.

Star Wars did a lot more for cinema than Lord of the Rings, but honestly Lord of the Rings blew Star Wars out of the water.

Lord of the Rings because I personally find the whole of the work to have a superior purpose, recreating a largely lost mythos from scraps.

I think both have there place. I don't really think I could choose. I have always been more into the matrix personally.

Lord of the Rings has the better sequel by far but other than that I gotta say Star Wars. I love the original trilogy whereas with Lord of the Rings I can't stand Two Towers and can't remember...about 75% of Return of the King.

I wonder what the results for this poll would have been if everything Star Wars that came after 1980 never happened.

In any case, it's LotR for me. I love both fantasy and sci-fi, but the characters and world of Star Wars just didn't resonate with me as much. It all felt so flat. Yes it is a bit unfair to compare the films considering the vast difference in budget and whatnot, but still. It just didn't jive with me.

Scraps, what do you mean? All of the LotR books are intact, and the writers had an enormous back-catalog of extra information and details to draw from, between the Silmarillion and the appendices. Yes the project as a whole was technically unfinished, Tolkien could have probably spent several lifetimes fleshing out Middle Earth. But the three books themselves were complete.

I was talking about Tolkein himself, not the makers of the movies. They did an excellent job translating his vision onto the big screen, and what they translated was a patchwork quilt made of scraps of myths and assumptions based on other myths and words. What Tolkein did is nothing short of incredible.

No. You think it's a simple question. I have been thinking about it for a long time now and still I can't tell which I prefer.

I know The Fellowship Of The Ring is my favourite out of the LOTR films and Return Of The Jedi is my favourite Star Wars film. Also, I believe Star Wars had more memorable entertaining scenes in a shorter amount of time, while LOTR's has some of the most epic battle and survival scenes of all. Both have awesome soundtracks and both had great acting moments.

I'll get back to this.

Edit: Chose Star Wars in the end, because I disliked some of LOTR 2 & 3.

Star Wars because I'm a sci-fi type guy. Never actually saw a lord of the rings movie but I know it's medieval fantasy so I'm not really interested.

This may be blasphemy, but I really don't think that the prequel trilogy screwed up Star Wars as much as RotK disenchanted me with the LOTR series. Talk about a bad ending.

Also, I pretend that this is what happened in Episode I

It's easier to imagine than Frodo and several members of the fellowship dying, Sam destroying the ring, the eagles never existing, and the stupid shire arc not happening.

Sure, a smaller percentage of King is bad, but it is an important part.

Lord of the rings because true men fight with swords and bows. And magic.

Original, "main" story: LOTR. Expanded Universe: Star Wars.

Yes, I prefer the Star Wars EU to The Hobbit, what of it? :P

I prefer Lord of the Rings myself. Star Wars is pretty damn awesome, but something about LOTR inched it ahead. It's just so gorgeous!

The Lord of the Rings.

I think the original Star Wars (episode IV) is one of the best films ever made, but don't think much of anything that came after it - no, not even Empire. By contrast I've read The Lord of the Rings every year or two for most of my adult life, and whilst I enjoy the Peter Jackson films I will always prefer the books.

1. LOTR (Books)
2. Star Wars (Ep IV)
3. LOTR (Films)
4. Star Wars (V and VI)
5. Star Wars (I, II and III)

Does this include Star Wars 1-3? Otherwise I vote for Lord of the Ring at the moment but I like Star Wars more than LOTR but only for 4-6.

LotR for me, I do like Star Wars but the childhood nostalgia from LotR puts it ahead for me.

I'm surprised it's winning actually, given how many Star Wars lovers come out to shit on the prequels anytime they're mentioned.

Probably Lord Of The Rings. Man I feel like watching that series again.

I prefer the Star Wars Universe overall, I know stuff about it, whereas I know very little about the LOTR universe beyond the movies.

For me it has to be the Lord of the rings, simply because of the sheer depth and detail of the world, what tolkien did is mind blowing, creating a world, with multiple races, with different languages, different styles of writing for some and a mostly complete world history. its nothing short of genius.

hmmm well since I liked all of the lord of the rings films and books and only like the orignal saga in star wars (plus KOTOR and Battlefront but those don't really count) I'd say it goes to lord of the rings if it was just the lord of the rings and the orignal saga that would have me poundering for quite awhile

three for the elven kings under the sky
seven for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone
nine for mortal men doomed to die
one for the dark lord on his dark throne
in the land of mordor where the shadows lie

one ring to rule them all, one ring to find them
one ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them
in the land of mordor where the shadows lie.

the fact that Tolkien could come up with something that sounds as amazing as that is part of the reason i like LoTR more than Star Wars, also I like fantasy more than sci fi.

People like Lord of the Rings? Just kidding. They're both great but if you forced me to choose I supposed I'd pick Star Wars.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away it would have been Star Wars by miles, but I think my love for that series has just been eroded away over the years. The only Star Wars thing I still have a real fondness for is Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 (I don't have a powerful enough PC to run the MMO).

Lord of the Rings on the other hand is still going strong in my mind. I still enjoy the books, movies and some of the related games, and with The Hobbit coming out soon this will hopefully continue.

Lord of the Rings. I love fantasy that takes place in the middle-ages, or at least got the style from there. Never been much of a sci-fi fan.

Ehh... I think Star Wars has a little bit better of a story and the world (or galaxy I should say) feels much more alive than Lord of the Rings.

But I generally like Lord of the Rings better. I think that Lord of the Rings was our generations' Star Wars.

And I'm not to sure I would have even liked Star Wars as much as I did if I hadn't been introduced to it at such a young age.

Ha, that's just child's play! Real men fight with laser swords, bowcasters and the force!

LOTR. The epicness, the everything. I mean everything was awesome.

For me its Star wars as i prefer Sci-fi to fantasy.

Damn... That guy knows his shit. Too bad he was still going through puberty when those movies were made.

1) LOTR books
2) LOTR films
9001) Star Wars movies
9000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001) Star Wars books, lore, and all that jazz

Star Wars - This is a rare opposite for me. I don't care for sci-fi and I love fantasy.

With LOTR, I couldn't get into the books. The movies were also boring with a few good sections. I was invested in the Frodo and Sam segments, but all the other side stories just didn't do it for me.

Star Wars, on the other hand, is like the Rocky series. It's just sheer entertainment. I really enjoyed Episodes 4,5, 6 and 1. There's also been quite a few good games associated with the series that has kept my interest in the lore over the years.

Don't think either is particularly better, and I will always love sci-fi more than standard fantasy, but Lord of the Rings will probably always be my personal favourite of the two.
