What is your favorite band?

Why hello fellow Escapistees? Escapistanians? Escap- Oh whatever, let's get to the point.

I am getting a new phone soon with a lot of memory which opens up the possibility of more music.
I want to add other artists into my library other then the ones I currently have ( Which is Coldplay, and more Coldplay)

So suggest me some bands/artists, and tell me what your favorites are. (I prefer actual music, not things like dubstep and the likes. It has to be with actual instruments, not someone who holds their microphone next to his/her washing machine and calls it "dubstep")
So, let's get this party started! :D

EDIT:
First off, the washing machine thing was a joke. I still don't think that it requires a lot of talent though, although I have respect for people who make it, and have no problems with people who listen to it. The reason I don't think it requires much talent is because in my opinion anyone can push a couple of buttons and put some sounds together on a computer. That doesn't make it music. And once again to clarify, this is all my opinion.

Enter Shikari

Come, open your mind hole so that I may pour my delicious knowledge into it's most wrinkled places.

I adore Arcade Fire and can confidently say that they are one of the better bands of the 21st century. They are especially brilliant live in my opinion.
Also I feel obliged to say Flight of the Conchords (if they count).

Red Hot Chili Peppers, everything with John Frusciante (while you're at it check out his solo stuff too, I recommend Enough Of Me)

Priestess

And also of course some Hendrix

Edit: Fixed the links. I second Enter Shikari :D

Coldplay?! Coldplay?! It looks like you got here just in time for music suggestions. Coldplay is like a gateway drug to shit music. Joke. But I don't like Coldplay.

Kasabian - Best thing from Leicester ever.

Tunes Ahoy!- Ijust wrote tunes I feel so dirty and chav like.
There's more awesomeness but I'm going off

My number 1 is most definiantly bowling for soup.

I love them and they make me very happy whenever I listen to them

My second favourite would be a japanese band called One OK Rock.

They're awesome and do a cool mix of english and japanese lyrics

I feel like I sell them a mite too often, but the correct answer here is White Lies.

Favorite band?

Can't tell if Black Sabbath, or Metallica.

Personally, I find Coldplay to be the musical equivalent of eating cardboard, but what the hey.

If I had to pick one... I'd probably go with Fleetwood Mac. Partially because I'm getting the early Peter Green (before he quit and lost his marbles) stuff:

And the later stuff with Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham:

I can't say that I always listen to them, I remember my parents playing it all when I was younger and I always come back to it, it's all so damn good!

My other favourite band right now is Every Time I Die...

The Flat Duo Jets.

Nice and simple.

1. Bad Company
2. The Beatles
3. Oingo Boingo
4. Jimi Hendrix
5. Creedence Clearwater Revival
6. The Who
7. The Rolling Stones
8. Jonny Cash
9. Rush
10. Queen
11. Led Zeppelin
12. Supertramp
13. Canned Heat
14. Pink Floyd
15. Lynard Skynard

Very hard decision, but either In Flames or Cradle of Filth.
If I knew how to include a video of each I would...

I'm going to be unoriginal and just go with The Beatles. Can't think of any other band that I've listened to for nearly as long that I can listen to at any time and fully enjoy.

Second and third would be a difficult choice between Electric Six and Muse. Further than that I haven't considered.

Well, there are three bands that I would call "favourite", and I simply can't choose between them as to a top. They're nothing like Coldplay though, so I doubt you'll find much in them. Still, I'll post a song each anyway.

Make of it what you will.

White Lies are a poor man's Editors, who are in themselves a poor man's Interpol. They are also one of the most charmless bands I've ever seen live.

OT: The Flaming Lips

Just as I was first getting into music, they had released The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song. It really stood out on the radio against all the guitar bands that were around at the time. They were the first band that I got really into MYSELF and wasn't just what everyone else was listening to. The weirdness really spoke to me. I've enjoyed all their albums and they have little spots in the narrative of my life. Seeing them play The Soft Bulletin album the whole way through was the best live experience of my life (one word: giant hamster ball). No other band puts as much effort into shows as they do and Wayne Coyne is one of the most charismatic frontmen I've ever seen.

I believe you have it the wrong way round - Interpol are a poor man's Editors, Editors are a poor mans's White Lies, and White Lies are a poor man's Joy Division.
However, White Lies have been brilliant the 3 times I've seen them live, from tiny concert hall to stadium to festival...

The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song is brilliant though. It's like the Chicken Dance with a political theme, and is guaranteed to be on a countryside walk playlist!

I've not seen a single live performance of them when they are not stood completely still looking mopey.

Interpol were first and kicked off the whole post-punk revival thing. By looking at the timeline, you can't deny that Editors took their chops from Interpol and White Lies took their chops from Editors. When Interpol came on the scene, they may not have been playing completely new sounds, but they were playing music that hadn't been heard much in about 10 years. By the time White Lies came around we had been swimming in 80s sounds for nearly as long as the 80s had been.

Interpol are far the more acclaimed band, Metacritic rates their first 2 albums as 81 and 80, whereas White Lies are languishing down at 58 to 60. Turn on the Bright Lights got onto the best albums of the 00s lists by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NME and Stylus.

On the Flaming Lips: Yea, its a shame they don't just write songs called Death.
The album The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song is off is the weakest album of their career, I even admit to myself that I never really listen to it. However, for me it had the merit of turning me onto their other work. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, The Soft Bulletin and Transmissions from the Satellite Heart are all amazing albums.

Live performance is not all about movement... The lead singer's voice carries over incredibly well into a live performance, and they're actually really very good at getting a crowd going.

I won't deny that Interpol came first out of the three. This does not make them the best though, and I find very little of interest in the way of stand-out hooks or songs from them.

As to taking their chops from other bands, having listened to radio interviews with them, they often claim the Talking Heads as a big influence. Here's a quote from their lead singer about their musical influences:

"We weren't alive during that period of music...we've never really been that into Joy Division, especially not the Editors...or even Interpol really."
"I don't think our music sounds a whole lot like those comparisons, I think we're a lot more euphoric and uplifting"

Ignore Metacritic here - those Interpol scores are based on just 4 critic reviews. We can hardly call this a general opinion.

Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, and the Foo Fighters.

I really like thrash metal, and I really like the Big 4. The Foo Fighters have really great tunes that go along with a lot of things, whether it be sports, easy listening, or parties. It also seems like they have never been bad, like ever.

Streetlight Manifesto, they've been my favorite band for a very long time.

That last point would be valid except for the fact that it is totally wrong. First 2 albums have 21 and 35 critics respectively.

Live performance may not be all about moving around, but it is about "performance". You could attend the gig in a blindfold and feel like you've not missed out on anything. The fact that the crowd gets going isn't indicative of that much of anything. I've see crowds go wild at crappy heavy metal bands playing upstairs at pubs, because, hey, there were metal heads there.

I'm surprised they cite the Talking Heads as an influence, because the Talking Heads made interesting music that combined post-punk with disparate genres like funk and world music. I always assumed the White Lies chief influence was blandness.

Apologies, you are correct. I was merely looking at the main page of the band and understanding wrong.

I think that a visual spectacle is merely a bonus when seeing a band live. Their performance of their songs is excellent, and their dynamics in terms of building up to huge choruses are particularly slick for a band that's been performing their songs for only 4 years...

Okay we've moved into straight-out insulting the band, which is where I leave this conversation. Opinions differ, but I'd ask you not to shout up when I mention this band in future, and I'll leave you to your Interpol.

There is a ton of 'em, but if I had to put them in order, it would go like this:

1) Metallica
2) Red Hot Chili Peppers
3) Radiohead
4) R.E.M.
5) Rage Against the Machine
6) Butthole Surfers
7) Pearl Jam

...and there's many more I can't think of right now. But yeah, Metallica and the Chili Peppers will always be on top for me.

Foo Fighters is great because they consistently release good material and are accessible to even the most casual music listener.

HOWEVER, if you want to get in on the pop-punk/metal thing that I've been getting into, I would suggest Four Year Strong's entire Enemy of the World album. Ahem...

Because in the end, music is for expression and enjoyment; and even though I usually kick out to Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and other "true metal" acts, sometimes you just have to have something just for FUN in there.

Radiohead. Best band to ever grace the earth in my opinion, also I think I'll just leave this webpage showing correlations between people favorite music and their SAT score. http://musicthatmakesyoudumb.virgil.gr/music.php

Of course Lil Wayne's at the bottom...

I know right that's the first thing I point out to people when I show them this.

Right now it's Oasis, cos they rock like nobody else, but my favorite of all time will, and probably always will be Weezer. It's hard to say why, it may be the outcast themes I can relate to or just the music itself but whenever I listen to them it just speaks to me like no other band ever has but something about Rivers Cumos songwriting just gets me.

Love most of the industrial music from the 80's, but they stand out.

MANOWAR! HAIL FROM THE U.S.

RIP Scott Columbus

Wow, this thread is already going in every direction. So what are my favourite bands?

60s, 70s: Led Zeppelin
80s: Metallica
90s: Soundgarden
00s: Queens of the Stone Age

Favorite Band:
Disturbed

(cause the official video SUCKS!)
Favorite Artist:
Brad Paisley

edit:
cause its funny

Having a favourite band/artist seems a bit of a waste, really, as there's so many to pick from offering so many different things.

Some artists would be: Squarepusher, Radiohead, Lali Puna, The National, Arcade Fire, Jo Newsom, Bat For Lashes, Aphex, Autechre, Dylan, Feist, Britney (mid to current era), Chemical Brothers earlier stuff, Nick Drake, Neil Young, Kanye West for two monumental albums, DJ Shadow (before the horrid Private Press)--- ...and that's enough for now.

Foo Fighters and Linkin Park. Although if the new stuff from LP is anything like "Burn It Down" then they won't be there for much longer.

EDIT:

Can't believe I forgot Nine Inch Nails
