Joss Whedon Speaks out against competition from Dark Knight Rises

From Batman News.com:
''Let's look at the bigger picture, and I can't say this enough: THIS IS NOT A ZERO SUM GAME. Our successes, whoever has the mostest, are a boon to each other. We're in the business of proving that superhero movies aren't just eye-candy (they're eye-TRUFFLES!). People seem intent on setting us against each other, and though I'm proud to be Woody Strode to Nolan's Kirk Douglas, I think they're missing the point. Whatever TDKR does on its first weekend, the only stat that matters to me is the ticket I'M definitely buying. Nolan and Raimi INVENTED the true superhero flick, yo. (Special mention to Jon Favreau and James Gunn.) Happy to be in the mix.''

Good man, nice he's actually showing support for his 'opposition', nice to know he's going to go see Batman :)

thoughts?

I feel the need to put this here.

It's Joss being classy. It's what he does......and he does it well.

Is it wrong of me to think that Yahtzee sounds like a Joss Whedon character in this video? Joss certainly has no monopoly on smug snarkiness.

I'm not actually a massive Whedon fan, but he's a nice guy. I can't really imagine he'd be a huge prick over it all.

Misleading title, he speaks about it, not against it (if anything, he actually speaks for it).

And yeah, always cool to see people in the same industry (and better/worse yet, within the same genre) having respect for one another. EA and ActiVision could take a few hints from these guys.

i think its obvious where i stand :)

Way to be a class act, Joss. ;)

NOW GET CRACKING ON THE AVENGERS 2.

Sounds like hes conceding defeat, as he should.

Nolan and Raimi INVENTED the true superhero flick, but Joss Whedon PERFECTED IT.

Thor: Have a care how you speak. Yahtzee is beyond reason, but he is of Australia. And he is my brother.

Black Widow: He hates Joss Wheddon

Thor: He's an expat

Eh, what do you expect him to say?

"Yeah, TBH, Batman is just going to be better, everyone ignore me, I'm a crap writer, but the Aliens franchise got even worse once I'd left"

Who wouldn't want to be Woody Strode? The man was awesome.

If The Dark Knight Rises beats out The Avengers in first weekend box office sales, I will eat my shoe.

That said, I am very excited for TDKR. I love Batman, and thought Nolan's first two Batman films were great. However, I don't see it beating out The Avengers, both in terms of sales and entertainment.

I tend to think it will be the better film though. The Avenger's was the acme of action films but the Batman films seem to be bout something more then the story, about certain parts of the human condition.

I don't see why these two movies are competing. At all. I think the Avengers is a damn good movie, and it's almost a statistical certainty that the Dark Knight Rises will also be a damn good movie.

Last time I checked nobody had a gun to my head telling me I could only give my money to one of them...

Sounds pretty humble to me and I absolutely agree. There's no need to compare the two, they are fundamentally different movies.

And why is no one adding the new Spiderman movie to this comic book hero match up? Completely objective question on my part, I don't care much for Spiderman.

I feel I should have clarified here as I've done with my irl conversations.

I DO think that, for all intents and purposes, that TDKR will be better as a film. The Avengers was a high octane superhero action movie that built its characters more in previous films than in this one. TDKR I'm sure will have the better character development, story, and most likely better cinematography. Plus, Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, and fucking Joseph Gordon-Levitt?! Hot damn dude!

However, TDKR will have to live up to TDK, so even going in, the expectations are ridiculously high. That's one strike against it. A second strike is going to be that the menace of this film, Bane, isn't nearly as popular as the villain of TDK, the Joker. Add onto the fact that Heath Ledger not only killed it as the Joker, but died shortly after, Tom Hardy (who is phenomenal, of course) has A LOT to live up to as a character that isn't nearly as well known. I'm sure his Bane will be great. I have no doubt his Bane will be great. But no matter how great it is, it won't have the hype the Joker did.

The Avengers had the same issue with the hype, as it had five movies building to it, and it did live up to it. But none of those five movies had TDK level of response, and now TDKR has to match or exceed that. I'm not saying it won't, but I just don't see it happening.

I am still very excited for TDKR. I'll have my midnight showing ticket purchased as soon as possible. I'd just be incredibly surprised if it beats The Avengers.

I have already see the Avengers and loved it. I know I will love The Dark Knight Rises.

I get the feeling Yathzee's trolling here.

Wouldn't they only be competing if they opened at the same time? Seriously why would he be worried about a movie a little more then 2 months after his?

As for which one's better I most certainly hope DKR is better because I LOVEDx1000 the Avengers, and if DKR can top that I would be overjoyed beyond belief.

I'm just gonna leave this here (I dunno how to embed videos on The Escapist, but you should totally click it)

I personally do not expect to enjoy Rises more than I did The Avengers because I can't imagine Rises being better than Dark Knight or even Begins, both of which I preferred The Avengers over.

But I think that each movie is trying to do something completely different, and I think they're both going to do those things very well.

Avengers is the big giant compilation piece full of action, humor with a bigger more varied cast of characters coming together

While Rises is going to be the wrapping up of a trilogy focusing more on story and the final fate of the individual characters.

That said, it doesn't surprise me at all that Whedon supports Rises. He's clearly a comic book fan, and most comic book fans aren't going to pass on the final Batman movie in this trilogy.

Oh I feel you, it's just I'm happy with the DKR not making as much money back (obviously I don't hope it's a flop) as long as it is a really good film.

Some people (myself included) just don't like Whedon.

One less person to talk to about Firefly.
Ah well, your opinion is your opinion, I respect that.

His reasoning is completely false and fairly arbitrary. He doesn't seem familiar enough with his works to make an accurate assessment and just seems to hate it because it's popular.

Just to make it clear I do think he is very talented it's just I don't like his stuff. You know Miyazaki the famous anime director, I don't like his stuff.

That doesn't seem like an entirely inaccurate assessment of Yahtzee's career. And some of the stuff he was saying kind of rang true with my opinions on the matter.

I admit that Whedon does have a certain penchant for doing a couple things I am not overly fond of, but I do enjoy his work as a whole.

One thing for instance, I get that Whedon likes to kill characters, and he usually does a good job with it...but because I know it's coming, it's not a question of if, I just have to ask "when" and "is it gonna be someone I like."

I mean with Dollhouse (and yes, I consider myself a big Dollhouse fan)

Also, he helped write Toy Story...Which is awesome.

I don't think so. He makes valid points about Whedon that explain why if you like one of his things, you like all of his work, and if you hate one of his things, you'll probably hate all of his work.

There's not a lot of diversity between characters, or in universes, so if you like one, you'll like 'em all.

Personally, I like him in small doses and when he keeps the one-liners to a minimum.

Anyone with enough knowledge can disprove anything Yahtzee says on the matter. I'm all for people having opinions on things, I just don't like it when people use false assumptions to justify them.

Its funny because I have this bet with a friend of mine (the shoe-eating part, not the Batman/Avengers bit). If it happens, I will do my damndest to hold my end up.

Staying classy Whedon, good on you.

Awesome joke man.

Whedon is right. The only thing that should matter is both movies doing well. Although he might be playing nice because he wants a certain Wonder Woman movie to get done and he wants a chance to do that and not burn any bridges before step 1.

I like Whedon in small doses. Dr Horrible did not annoy me. I prefer his universes to feel fleshed out. I like Serenity because of it was better put together than Firefly. I still say that if he spent more time in pre production fleshing out Firefly and not do the slapdash approach, it would not matter what episode was shown first. Apparently, that is a moral failing on my part to think that because potential to be great is a million times better than being great.

I can't stand the Browncoats and the Whedonites who think he is some delicate flower that needs defending. He takes criticism just fine and does not need you protect him.

For anyone that wants to chew me out, please send me a PM and do it that way. I'm not going to derail another thread because you are offended.

I'd recommend cooking it to make it nice and tender, then maybe using a steak sauce on it~

Yeah, I would boil it or turn it into a smoothie or something.
