Five Best Shows Recently on TV

 Pages 1 2 3 4 NEXT

I just watched the latest episode of Madmen and it has me thinking of how grateful I am that something this fantastic is on TV.

I've had discussions with friends about the growing quality of TV and how that is effecting movies. I liked Clint Eastwood's Mystic River, but, was it really any better than a good episoe of Law and Order?

I was going to ask about the best ever, but, that isn't fair. Star Trek the original series was brave, bold and original for it's time, but, I think things have been bumped up a notch since then, particularly coming into the late 1990s.

My recent best in no order because they're all great:

Battlestar Galactica: Can't recall whose list it was, but is considered by some the best sci-fi TV show ever, even over Star Trek Original. I have to agree. The level of human drama is unsurpassed in Sci Fi. Add to that their take on what space battles would really look like and the terrific special effects, and this is one not to miss.

Sopranos: This started out as a dark comedy. They were to draw parallels between immediate family and mob relations. Instead, it turned into one of the darkets morality tales I can think of.

Breaking Bad: Another morality tale. Watching the early episodes, I thought they were going for a sort of criminal version of McGyver. This too became a morality tale. I've been on edge watching this show. You never know where it is going next. You root for the main character, even as he descends further into evil.

Mad Men: the show that inspired this topic. It is just great drama. Very original. I read somewhere else that, if you show a gun in act one, it must be fired by act three. This show breaks that formula. In fact, it doesn't follow any forumula. I am just in awe of the events of each week.

Walking Dead: Who knew a zombie show could also have so much human drama.

Funny, none of these are on normal network (ABC, CBS, NBC) channels. Either they have to catch up, or I need y'all to let me in on things I'm missing.

Best shows that are still running right now

1. Doctor Who
2. Legend of Korra
3. Community
4. Game of Thrones
5. Modern Family

Argh. I keep being told Game of Thones rules. I don't have HBO! I'll have to look into Legend of Korra. Never heard of it.

Adventure Time
Archer
Korra
Young Justice
Thundercats
(way to step it up cartoon network)

ps-walking dead is kinda awful

Well, you seem to be asking about all time best, because recently all we get are reality shows and good shows are cancelled all the time.

Anyways, my favourite are:

Star Trek The Next Generation: I just watched the first episodes as a kid. I wasn't interested in watching it again as I thought it was cheesy and boring, but how wrong was I! Now I watch many episodes in a row everyday and I'm already on Season 5 and having such a blast! This was quality TV, with amazing acting, great stories and it looks surprisingly well. I even prefer this to the original trilogy now. The characters are amazing! Don't be put off by the average first season.

Lost: OK, the ending was underwhelming and disappointing, but even then it was totally emotional. This series is all about the characters and after six seasons you'll feel like they're part of your life. Full of mysteries and some fantastic elements this is probably the best series ever, although I doubt I will watch it again thanks to its average last season, the lack of answers, but the journey is totally worth it.

Avatar: the original and the real one. Nothing related to the crappy movie version or the other movie with the same name including giant smurfs. This is the journey of the master of the four elements. A journey full of heroes, conflicts, friendship and of course great action and humour too! This animated series is better than most live action things on TV. It's got funny and lovely characters that have personal growth and it also has a proper ending, something which is not so common on animated series. The follow-up Legend of Korra is amazing too!

Fringe: Thankfully this will get a 5th and final season, so let's hope it gets a decent ending. The best sci-fi on TV nowadays. What looked like an X-File wannabe at first is much better than that and totally enganging. Don't be put off by the slow first episodes. Brilliant acting and interesting mysteries and stories. It's the best series since Lost.

Game of Thrones: Amazing and engaging gritty medieval fantasy. It's brutal, it's filthy, full of betrayal. Power corrupts, especially when you fight for a throne. Watch it now!

Great choices! I just don't agree about Walking Dead. It may be kind of slow and boring at times, but overall I still enjoy it.

I'd say the new version of Thundercats is even better than the original one.

Archer is sooo fun!

Korra is great as is Avatar before it.

I never watched Young Justice and I don't think I'd like it.

Archer! OMG, that show is just so damn funny! Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.

I agree with you that TV series can be more amazing than films because you can truly get to know the characters, but are you sure about the growing quality of TV? Great shows like Awake get cancelled all the time and we're getting more and more reality shows. It makes me hopeful and worried at the same time...

Legend of korra
A game of thrones
Leverage
Breaking in
Criminal minds

What can I say I'm diverse

I watched an episode of MASH recently. I liked it and appreciated it for when it came out, but, tv has matured a lot since then. Compare ER to Saint Elsewhere sometime. Sometime in the 1990s , I think TV really came into its own.

Best shows on TV, some of which are not currently airing, in no particular order:

Mad Men
Game of Thrones
Homeland
South Park
Breaking Bad
American Horror Story
Boardwalk Empire

I realise that's more than 5, but they're all great.

-Death Note
-Life on Mars
-Adventure Time
-Top Gear
-Futurama

Yeah, those. I'm in a rush so I haven't quite thought about it too much, but those are my top 5 off the top of my head.

South park. The only cartoon ever to succesfully be incredibly offensive and gross, yet still have a point.

The Last Airbender. The Legend of Korra is great and maybe it'll grow to supercede tla but not yet. This is the one, the cartoon that shows what a kid's cartoon can do.

BAND OF BROTHERS. I don't care that it's not on tv anymore. This is, was and will always be the best damn tv show ever made.

Can't think of two more.

-Futurama
-Walking Dead
-Game of Thrones
-Eureka
-Castle

Those would have to be my top 5, though not in a particular order.

Game of Thrones - Enough has been said in this thread already so i don't really have much to add other than i love it.

Boardwalk Empire - It's basically Game of Thrones but with gangsters.

Lip Service - A really interesting drama about Lesbians set in the city of Glasgow.

Family Guy and American Dad - You probably already know if you like these two already. I actually think American Dad is better. If you don't like Family Guy because of the cutaway jokes you should check out AD because there aren't any in there.

and apart from those 5 i pretty much don't watch tv anymore.

Castle.
Community.
Arguably Primeval.
Game of Thrones.

Community and GoT are my favourites though. I can watch one for a laugh and another for a serious, thought-provoking session of violence and sexamong other more important things.

My favourites are as follows:
Community:
It is a very funny show, full of various Pop Culture references with a very good over arching story woven in for good affect.
Chuck:
Another comedy, this one is quite special, as it is a very unusual spy show. As the episodes generally go for around 40 minutes, watch three of them, and it could beat a James Bond movie.
Futurama:
I used to really love this show, while the new episodes are not really quite as good, it always will have a special place in my heart.
The Big Bang Theory:
The only reason this is on the list is that is one of the only two other shows I watch even semi-regularly. It has it's moments.
Top Gear:
The new seasons suck, Top Gear Australia was terrible and it doesn't hold a candle to the previous seasons. But it is the only other show I watch, so it has to be here. But, it is also here because I loved the old series.

1) Breaking Bad
2) Game of fucking Thrones
3) ...I dunno man, those are the only two shows I bother watching right now. People agree they are the best, so I'm not really missing out. Fringe was actually mentioned in this thread, so that shows you how far down the quality of TV shows is...

I only watch two shows (I'm in the uk with no sky or cable tv)

Two Greedy Italians, brilliant cookery show, that's more that just food
Archer, and now that's finished!:(

Next week is my busiest tv week of the year, two semi finals and a final, I speak of course about the Eurovision!

I only watch...

C'mon grab your friends
We'll go to very
Distant lands
With Jake the dog
And Finn the hu-man
Fun will never end
Adventuer Time!!!

It's awesome...<.<

From the ones that are still on now, I look forward to watching:
Game of Thrones
Big Bang Theory
New Girl
Merlin
Sherlock

(+ a variety of UK panel shows)

While they was still good (Seasons 1-2):
Skins (UK version)
Heroes
Misfits

Sadly lost:
Hustle
Robin Hood
Torchwood
Life on Mars
(Though it ended when the story demanded, which was good)

Game of thrones
boardwalk empire
big bang theory
adventure time
avatar legend of korra

however including slightly older shows id replace the bottom 3 with

the wire (what else)
lost
stargate universe (i liked it)

I disagree with The Walking Dead, season 2 was so dam boring. I'm really, really, really hoping season 3 gets better. Oh, and I love the comics so I know it's not all about them fighting zombies and focuses on the characters but gods dam, get off the fucking farm already!

1: Breaking Bad - While not my favourite tv show ever, it's definitely the best made tv show EVER.
2: Game of Thrones
3: Mad Men
4: Community - Makes me sad it's ending, season 3 has been glorious.
5: Dexter - last couple of seasons have been lacking but overall it's a great show.

These are all just ones I've been watching recently, mad props to some that finished a few years back like Battlestar Galactica(my second favourite all time tv show) and the Wire.

EDIT: Shit, forgot Boardwalk Empire, that would be high up on my list, I'd say that's my joint 5 with Dexter. There's probably many more, being a student these past 3 years has lead me to have a great love for television.

Top 5 shows on currently:

Leverage. Snappy dialog, interesting situations, bit formulaic at times. It has an advantage over other formulaic shows because it plays with its own conventions a lot more and also, it even tells the audience what the formula it.

Being Human: I know its blasphemy to think this, but the US version of Being Human does not suck.

Burn Notice.

Young Justice is a well written complex show.

Legend of Korra is a great show, but I do not like it. To be honest, the stakes were made too high right from the start. The Legend of Aang was about the world being threatened by Firelord Orza and Aang needing to stop it. Sure, it was a bad thing overall, but the world would still be around if Aang lost. The massive conflict in Legend of Korra is Avatar Korra fighting for a way of life. if she loses, that way of life is gone. That kinds of takes the fun out of it.

Other shows I wish were still on:

Sara Jane Adventures: Its sad that Elizabeth Sladen died because I want to see how the story lines wrap up. Of course, there is always hope that Rani, Luke, and Clive will appear in a future episode of Doctor Who as a proper send off for Sara Jane Smith.

LOST: Best TV show ever, and I doubt we'll ever see something of the same magnitude.

Trailer Park Boys: Made me love Canada.

The Mighty Boosh: Surreal comedy, how it should be done.

Prison Break: Season 1 only though.

Fringe: But only because people have mentioned Walking Dead already... I find Walter quite a funny character, and alternate Olive is quite hot. Anyhoo, I watched Battleship yesterday, I'm immune to any cheesy plot lines they can throw at me.

five shows korra of course
game of thrones
burn notice
chuck
Sanctuary A cool sci-fi show with amanda tapping from stargate fame

Don't think I even watch 5 shows on TV any more.

House - and that's about to finish as well.
The Big Bang Theory
Futurama (technically that's still ongoing I believe)

And...that's it. I should probably start watching the likes of Game Of Thrones and that online, but I just haven't got round to it yet.

In no particular order.

- Game Of Thrones
- Scrubs
- Psych
- Chuck
- Community

Futurama and Lost are just out of the top 5, but could've been in it easily.

In no real order, and bearing in mind that I don't watch that much TV -

Game of Thrones
Burn Notice
Castle
Community
Archer

Well I only watch 2 shows; the rest don't interest me.

1) Fringe (the only awesome show that Fox HASN'T cancelled, although it is entering its final season of the writers' volition)
2) Game of Thrones (because Charles Dance, people! And it's awesome.)

Sacman:

Adventure Time yes!
It's a show I would make my kids watch. I would even like to have had this when I was a kid. But really, this is the animated show, alongside Korra, that adults can fully enjoy. It's a bit surrealistic and with a humour of its own.

My top five shows will pretty much mirror several other lists here but here it is:

Archer
Game of Thrones
Legend of Korra
Daily Show/Colbert Report
Mad

Mad has to be my new favorite show right now. The random art styles might seem offputting and you really have to know who they are jokeing on, but man when you actually get the joke you will laugh your ass off.

If I could add more shows I'd also add Ugly Americans, Avengers EMS, and Spartacaus.

Hmmm... Let's go with:

- Game of Thrones
- Community
- Doctor Who
- Battlestar Galactica
- Lost

Some of my other favourites are Chuck, Fringe, SG: Atlantis, Dexter, Walking Dead. I watch a lot of tv. I could probably go on for a while.

Most of mine have been said except for Supernatural

I'm quite fond of these...

Castle
Supernatural
Adventure Time
The Daily Show/Colbert Report

I really don't watch much TV. The internet, making music, gaming, and rummaging for interesting media of all kinds sort of take up most of my time.
