Blood Donation!!! *Edit* Pages PREV 1 2 3
Shit man hearing stuff like that definitely makes it seem worthwhile. I post this thread every 3 months so eventually you'll hopefully be able to tell me you did it as well :)
Call me uneducated, but why does that mean you can't give blood? Unless you have a condition, or it was a recent thing...
//I gave two liters last year, no it wasn't my blood. //I was on my way to give blood but I had a sudden urge for homemade black pudding. //
You might contaminate someone with... something. I can't give blood for the same reason the military hasn't taken me under their sweaty overdeveloped wing.
I
Having looked it up, I can give blood, its just heavily advised against. I don't really know why.
Call me cynical, but I don't see the need to worry about saving lives, considering how there's more than 6 billion people on this planet. I would consider selling blood though. ;D
I would give blood more often, but I sell plasma for beer money so that cuts into my ability to donate.
I don't have time for cynics as a rule so I'll just say this, could you ever watch someone your extremely close too die from something preventable? Something you could prevent with a little charity? Someones Father, wife, brother or child? Thats why I care about saving peoples lives so NO ONE ever has to go through that experience.
The lifetime ban for MSM is infinitely longer than the one year deferral period for someone known to have had unprotected sex with someone who was HIV positive. Think about that for a minute. Most groups are calling for the lifetime ban to be replaced with a similar deferral period. So we've got: I think it's plainly obvious that something doesn't quite sit right with those two standards.
That's pretty shitty. Does that also hold if the sex is reversed i.e. a woman having unprotected sex with a man who is known to be HIV+?
I would but I is too youngz bitchez!!! But yeah I probably would give some when I'm 18 which is only aboot 3 weeks away... woop!
Correct. It's the same rule for having sex with an IV drug user, a prostitute, or being raped. They're considered to be "high risk sexual partners". Also, the use of the undefined term "sexual contact" is problematic. It creates an unnecessary ambiguity while not taking into account low-risk sexual activity. Paying a hooker for a hummer is still a pretty low risk activity. Much more low risk than a woman having unprotected anal sex with a bunch of dudes she doesn't know. But the former gets you a one year deferral.
I just looked at the NHS blood donation specs and the UK actually has the year deferral for dude on dude sex, not a lifetime ban. Doesn't help me though, I was life-banned for something else. I didn't realise that that meant my (currently non-existent) girlfriend couldn't give blood, but under those conditions an ex girlfriend of mine did give blood a couple of times when she shouldn't have done...oh well, it probably won't kill anyone.
I wonder... I've never done so myself. First time I tried, I was apparently so nervous that my pulse was too high. They sent me away. Maybe next time I'll be more calm.
I'm in pretty much the same boat except I grew up in England before I moved to Australia. Its a real shame that I cant donate because I have one of the more rare blood types. Damn those farmers feeding cows other cows!
I won't be donating any time soon as I'm currently broken and I need to recover before even thinking about donating. Besides, I don't think the blood bank likes having residual traces of pain killers in the blood donated to them.
I'm all for giving blood but two things always prevent me from doing it ALONE: 1. I'm not certain what my blood type is (my mum never bothered to learn that crucial detail). 2. I...hate...needles. Not to the extent that Goku hates needles (because that guy REALLY hates needles), but I just don't like the idea getting pricked and have some fluids drained out of me. I did when I was little, but I was a little hell spawn back then and those days are behind me.
I donated once when the Red Cross brought a mobile unit to my college and set up a blood drive inside one of the halls. Haven't done it since though because I would have to drive to a donation center. I will gladly give blood if the Red Cross comes to me, but sadly they don't anymore since I graduated.
That's the same reason I hate mosquitoes and ticks
I'm not scared of needles I do however dislike people putting sharp pointy objects into my flesh
Yes, I also hate those two kinds of insects. Not so much for the biting, though. More so because those blood suckers can infect you with some nasty illness/disease/virus. Fun fact: Female mosquitoes are the only gender of mosquitoes that actually suck blood. AND they only do so in order to reproduce.
I can't. I have a severe form of anemia. My blood simply cannot hold onto iron at all. Blood testing becomes awkward, especially when doctors ask, "According to this blood test you have zero iron in your blood. How are you still alive?"
I donate as much as I can.
Why would I "donate" my blood when I can easily sell it to wannabe vampires?
sadly i cant the drugs i take for my heart condition would get my blood rejected. but good luck on your indevor
I was asked by the National Health Service (after donating blood for a number of years) to also donate just platelets. Apparently my blood produces loads of them and replenishes them very quickly. This also apparently means my family is at risk from blood clotting conditions such as Deep Vein Thrombosis - w00t!
I would, but every time the opportunity's presented itself, I've been on one drug or another that prevented blood donation. First Epilim, then twice I was on antibiotics for acne, and now I'm about to start a six-month course of Roaccutane, which can cause some horrible side effects of given to the wrong people, so no dice there, either. However, when I come off that, hopefully I'll actually be eligible to donate. Might help to know my blood type first, though.
Well I only just donated ALL of my blood but if they need more I can always scrounge up a few chumps.
That's why I said the lifelong ban is ludicrous.
I donate to no one! They can have it when I'm dead and they'll still need to pry it from my limp bloodless corpse...<.<
I am not allowed to give blood, because smoking weed less than once a month apparently is "risky behaviour" on par with unprotected anal sex with strangers and a heroin addiction. That's what they told me at the blood bank! If they don't want my (perfectly fine, and might i add, tasty) blood, then so be it.
Hooray for people giving blood! It's a very good thing; Unfortunately I can't do it for numerous reasons but it good to know that those who are able adhere to it. Gladly in the UK, the MSM rule is only a one year deferral, and there are still a few people debating that is a bit harsh. While there are slight risks with blood testing HIV (similar to rates of condom breakage), to completely exclude one risk group simply due to trouble in the past is a very bad lesson to teach, nevermind the people dying due to lack of blood donations.

Regulations vary according to where you live. Here at least we are only allowed to give every third month, though I was called in before my time because there was an immediate need for my blood type. I also think that 2 pints sounds a bit too much though. Usually we give 1, but that might be a variable too.
