Chose anything from Avenue Q. Most of them are hilarious yet have quite a powerful message attached. "Nothing lasts, life goes on, full of surprises. You'll be faces with problems, of all shapes and sizes. You're going to have to make a few compromises for now... but only for now!"
I've really liked a lot of the Death Grips stuff, especially Beware has some of the best "darker" lyrics i've heard. "Nature knows not of mercy, to pray is to accept defeat"
You learned defeat from the whores with bad feet didn't you?
OT: One of my favorite lines comes from the Hollywood Undead song "Lights Out." What makes it even sweeter is that the song is a diss to their former lead singer.
Like a stripper in a cage making minimum wage,
You'll be gone like a dollar bill hitting the stage.
Cobbs: At some point in your music listening life you have come across a certain song whose music is amazing, and just when you think it can get no better a wondrous barrage of lyrical power hits you smack bang in the ear hole. It's almost so sweet that it brings a tear to your eye, but the same strength in the lyric keeps you strong. My question to you is, what song/line from a song has had this effect on you?
The song that immediately springs to mind for me is Carry on my Wayward Son by Kansas. Kinda self explanatory.
Ooh, that's a good one. Really drives me to keep killing demons.
OT: The chorus of this song really had a therapeutic effect on me when my most recent relationship crashed:
Also, Surprise Hotel by Fool's Gold. I can't understand a word he's saying, but it sounds fun.
And most recently, the lyrics to Rains of Castamere. Knowing the song's background, it's badass.
I would also like to nominate the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
On the day that my best friend died I could not get my cop up cleaned
Same is true with any Rakim lyric, him and Eric B used to tear it up, shame it moved toward money and women from bragging about microphone skills
Yeah you can't not love the Biz.
And yeah, Rakim was the king. What was that absolutely legendary lyric of his again?
I take 7 MC's, put 'em in a line, Add 7 more brothers, who think they can rhyme, Well, it'll take 7 more before I go for mine, That's 21 MC's ate up at the same time.
During the middle of the song he says "cry me a fucking river bitch".
That part explains my emotions quite accurately at the moment towards a certain someone...
I thought of this pretty quickly. Also, in the Gallows song Will Someone Shoot That Fucking Snake, there's the brilliant line 'You always were, a fucking prick'.
That does have to go up against this though:

and also this entire song:
I'm pretty sure that's meant to say "I could not get my copper clean".
I reckon that Jeffrey Lewis is the best lyricist alive.
This song is practically an essay about the pitfalls and absurdity of trying to be an artist.
The lyrics...<p>Today I went to Major Matt's to remaster my old album<br />And on the L train in the morning, I was pretty sure I saw Will Oldham,<br />He was wearin' the same sunglasses he had on stage at the Bowery Ballroom<br />Had he come to walk among the Williamsburgers of his kingdom<br />And like the burghers of Calais will a sacrifice be demanded?<br />To offer up our dreams and beg for mercy empty-handed?<br />And hapless in our hipness crowded 5 to an appartment<br />Relegate our dreams to hobbies and deny our disappointment<br />Cause The Stones in '65 want total satisfaction, kid<br />But The Stones in '69 see grace in just getting what you need<br />But if that's a victory then I'd hate to see what I'd look like defeated<br />Cause I know there are those among us who seem to get their dreams unimpeded<br />Today I went to Major Matt's to remaster my old album<br />And on the L train in the morning, i was really sure i saw Will Oldham,<br />He was wearin' the same sunglasses he had on stage at the Bowery Ballroom<br />Had he come to walk among the Williamsburgers of his kingdom<br />And you might say now there's a guy who seems to have their world laid out before him<br />Or you might say, he's just a rich kid or a fascist or a charlatan<br />But either way you say it if you look at indie-rock culture you really can't ignore him<br />And even if at first dismissive, after some listens you'll enjoy him<br />I was thinking this on the L train, intend on bursting my own bubble<br />How long should an artist struggle before it isn't worth the hassle?<br />And admit we aren't fit to be the one inside the castle<br />This quest for greatness or, at least hipness, just a scam<br />And too much trouble but then what makes on human being worthy of an easy ride<br />Born to be a natural artist you love or hate but can't deny<br />While us minions in our millions tumble into history's chasm<br />We might have a couple of laughs but we're still wastes of protoplasm<br />Today I was gonna waste some time and money to remaster some dumb old album<br />And on the L train in the morning, i was really sure I saw Will Oldham,<br />He was wearin' the same big sunglasses he had on stage at the Bowery Ballroom<br />Had he come to see the strife here in the gutters of his kingdom?<br />Where us noble starving artists are striving to feed our ego<br />Our mothers like our music our our friends come to our shows<br />And if our friends become successful, we'll consider them our foes<br />Go home to our 4 roomates after payin' big bucks for rockstars shows<br />What a nightmare! what a horror! i don't want no part of this<br />Get me off this crazy ride,<br />I'm gonna puke, I'm gonna piss! I'd rather kill myself,<br />I'd rather just relax or not exist<br />But you say you wanna do an e-mail interview? Oh what the heck, I can't resist!<br />'Hey, 'ma, guess what today, I did another magazine interview!<br />Honey, that's great, you're really famous!!' Yeah and I'm 27 too!<br />I kinda thought I was gonna grow up to do stuff that would benefit humanity<br />But it's getting harder to tell if this artist's life is even benefitting me<br />Cause I was gonna waste some time and money today to remaster some dumb old album<br />And on the L train in the morning, I was totally sure I saw Will Oldham,<br />He was wearin' the same big sunglasses he had on stage at the bowery ballroom<br />And since I was feeling in need of answers I just went right up and asked him, I said,<br />Will Bonnie Prince, Palace or whatever 'What do you think about it?<br />Is it worth being an artist or an indie-rock star, or are you better off without it?'<br />Cause I mean maybe the world would be better if we were all just uncreative drones,<br />No dead child, hood dreams to haunt us, a decent job, a decent home,<br />And if we have some extra time we could do real things to promote peace,<br />Become scientists or history teachers or un-corrupt police at least,<br />'Come on Will, you gotta tell me!!' I grabbed and shook him by the arm,<br />The L train was leaning Bedford with 10,000 white 20 somethings crowed on<br />He opened his mouth to speak but it was lost in the rumbling of the wheels<br />We were thrown together in a corner and I yelled 'Tell me, man, for real!'<br />You're living comfortably, I assume, even if you're not quite a household name<br />You've reached a pretty high level of success & critical acclaim<br />The L train got to first avenue and a bunch of people piled out<br />I was starring into his sunglasses and I was really freakin' out i was like,<br />Steamboat Willie Bonnie Prince of all this shit, you're like the king of a certain genre<br />But even you must want to quit like if you hear a record by Bob Dylan or Neil Young or whatever<br />You must start thinkin' 'People like me, but i won't be that good ever'<br />And I'm sure the thing is probably Dylan himself too stayed up some nights<br />Wishing he was as good as Ginsberg or Camus<br />And he was like 'Dude, I'm such a faker, I'm just a clown who entertains<br />and these fools who pay for my crap, they just have pathetic punny brains<br />and Camus probably wished he was Milton too or whatever, you know what i'm sayin'?!'<br />So Will, will you be straight with me now that it's just us 2 on this train?<br />Cause I was gonna spend some time and money today to remaster some dumb old album<br />And I saw you here on the L train<br />And I was like 'Hey, is that Will Oldham?' he must at least , have some perspective<br />Cause it's like, living in this town I get so confused & wound up & up tight<br />And I just don't know up from down<br />And then we'd reached the last stop and the subway was deserted<br />There was a long moment of silence and I let go of his shirt<br />I started to think that maybe I'd made some kind of big mistake<br />I tried to walk out onto the platform but by then it was too late<br />His sunglasses seemed to grow darker and still he hadn't even spoke<br />He just came right up behind me and put his hand around my throat<br />And threw me down onto the concrete and kicked my face in with his boot<br />And dragged me down onto the train tracks and tied my hands back with his coat<br />And I was slipping out of conciousness as he was slipping down my jeans<br />And he was punching me and humping me and I slipped off into a dream<br />So it might have just been a delusion<br />But I thought I heard him say something like 'Artists are pussies'<br />Then he climbed back up and ran away<br />So I lay there in the darkness on the train tracks cold and broken<br />The hours passed and I thought,<br />Well... maybe I won't remaster that old album<br />And then I started thinking maybe it really hadn't been Will Oldham<br />Even though he did hold my arms and fucked me just like Will sings in 'A sucker's evening'<br />But whether it was him or not I couldn't forget the words he'd spoken<br />'Artists are pussies', like we're wusses or we end up getting fucked<br />And other kinds of folks are dicks, tall, smart and strong<br />And born to fuck us up I know,<br />It sounds really sexist and stupid,<br />It's a terrible analogy but at that moment on the train tracks,<br />It made a lot of sense to me maybe it's just some kind of natural balance,<br />Like 2 types of mental gender that's gone on in all societies,<br />In one form or another like some dicks were born to conquer,<br />I probably would if I could but if i'm just a pussy, that's okay<br />Cause in a few months maybe, I'll put out something good.</p>
"A Slice of the knife to a throat, and their blood turns to ice TALVISOTA!". Also "With molotov coctail in hand No fear of their tanks Death or glory!"
The entire song is pretty fucking epic
While I will agree that song by Sabaton is good, I have to go with the song 'Light in the Black' for having one of their better verses and choruses. The whole song is wonderfully done.
"Leaving home... set to sea... Was this really meant to be? See the shores of our homes fade away. Facing blood... Facing pain... Have my brothers died in vain? Many lives have been lost alone the way."
Though for them, their newest album has been a veritable gold mine of quality. An example is from 'A Lifetime of War' off of Carolus Rex.
"Two ways to view the world So similar at times Two ways to rule the world To justify their crimes
By kings and queens young men are sent to die in war Their propaganda speaks those words been heard before Two ways to view the world brought Europe down in flames Two ways to rule
Has man gone insane A few will remain Who'll find a way To live one more day Through decades of war It spreads like disease There's no sign of peace Religion and greed cause millions to bleed Three decades of war"
I know it is more than a single lyric but the first verse and the chorus lead in together beautifully and would be lessen without the proper context of the song.
Nouw: Any song by Rhapsody of Fire or Luca Turilli has epic lyrics. Their albums tell an epic fantasy tale and although it can be pretty cheesy at times, it doesn't fail to send chills down your spine.
"I SWEAR MY SPIRIT WILL NEVER FALL!"
Agreed on the Rhapsody of Fire. They are so beautiful and operatic!
It's a million o clock. Too hot to sleep, A rotten taste in my mouth, And my eyes are deep. There's nothing much really going on up here, I'm holding on for dear life and one more beer. I guess you could say it's a sick little show, A bottle of troubles and a bed full of woe It's easy to see without looking too far, you'd have to be a saint to be as sick as you are.
Just such a well written song. I can't think of any other lyrics that have had such an impact on me
The Band: Snog. The Song: The last days of rome The setting: Random selection from Pandora on my barenaked ladies station.
The explanation: I was playing a LoL game and couldn't alt tab to skip the stuff( I liked it , but wrong station for it.)
Then it gets to the epic part. After a bunch of hoarse muttering about towers and sinking and doom and stuff (I was busy owning some poor sods as a super ultra fed Jax and wasn't paying attention), it gets to the lyrics.
"And I chewed the chewing Gum of Haaaaaate!!! I chewed it Looong! I chewed it laaaate and I chewed that chewing gum of Haaaaate!! Munch Munch!"
I immediately started laughing hysterically. I couldn't stop. It was just too good. THE CHEWING GUM OF HATE!!
You can't find the right version of the song on youtube. Just a very very bad instrumental version of it.
Look through these blackened eyes, You'll see ten thousand lies, My lips may promise but my heart is a whore. - Last, Nine Inch Nails. It's about lying about addiction.
A friend in need's a friend indeed, A friend with weed is better, A friend with breasts and all the rest, A friend who's dressed in leather. - Pure Morning, Placebo. I just like it.
You told me to give you a lyric, there you go. My work here is done.
Alright, fine, plural lyrics-

The whole song is amazing but since you asked for a lyric I would have to say it is And did you exchange A walk on part in the war For a lead role in a cage?
"A Slice of the knife to a throat, and their blood turns to ice TALVISOTA!". Also "With molotov coctail in hand No fear of their tanks Death or glory!"
The entire song is pretty fucking epic
Man, I love that song. Best line from it there, too. I might've gone with either Union (Slopes of St. Benedict) or White Death (You're in the sniper's sight, the first kill tonight! Time to die! You're in the bullet's way, the White Death's prey! Say goodbye!)
I think my favourite's the third verse of Never Be Moved by Clutch.
"Woe be the architect of our city, cruel leveler, the hillock strangler. Bold pusher of the cold bone index Through the knotted bowels of the old alleyways. Read the future a false haruspex. Recall how he coaxed us out of the green plains. All of us, dumb eyed at the sheer number. So long ago it does not matter. Woe be architect in his slumber, for the Watcher never sleeps. And on that day there will be rejoicing and dancing streets."
What does it mean? Bugger if I know. But it sounds awesome. Starts around 1:20.
For me one of the biggest things about a song is the lyrics, they have to strike me in some way. this is why pop songs an artists like Kesha will never be worth a damn for me, the lyrics need to be GOOD, and well vocalized, the lyrics on paper could be amazing, but of they're screamed and unintelligible then that's also a turn off.
my best lone song would be Regulator By clutch. chorus is amazing, "Dream with the feathers of angels stuffed beneath your head, the regulator's swinging pendulum" X2

now i also love the band Seether for this, and they are my favorite band becuse of this, so my best song from the would be Here and Now, and the part that always gets me is right after the first chorus
"I'm wilted and faded after all, to strung out and burnt out to be half the man that I could be, I'll never belong on side your world, so black out the sun and leave me to play out this same old tragedy"
