Now, some psychopaths just slaughtered ten people at a theater for no reason. I'm at a loss here.
Not for no reason, those people died for the right to bear arms. Clearly this justifies the bloodbath, and the US can lean back, change no laws and wait for this to happen again next week.
Agreed, we need better gun laws.
Specifically, we need to post snipers in the projection booths so they can stop this kind of shit before it starts.
the huge increase in violence caused by legalising firearms?
Ummm, what increase? Every time gun laws are loosened, violent crime drops. Every time they are made stricter, violent crime increases or stays the same. Maybe this explains why the UK, despite having the strictest gun laws in Europe, also has the highest violent crime rate in the industrialized world, whereas Switzerland, where the government issues machine guns to every household, is not only fairly devoid of crime, but even managed to remain devoid of Nazis during World War 2 despite bordering both Italy AND Germany.
Armed victims create dead criminals. Bottom line.
In countries that don't share a thousand-mile-long border with Mexico, illegal firearms are very difficult to get and prohibitively expensive.
Fixed that for ya.
Seriously, psych test. I love my guns just as much as the next red neck, but why is this not a thing?
Because a lot of people who have been in the mental health system aren't crazy, and a lot of crazy people haven't been in the system... and because there's not much of a link between being crazy and being violent. I knew this one guy who thought that he was a space vampire and the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were cloned from his own blood, but I'd trust him with a gun a hell of a lot sooner than I'd trust my stepdad with one.
Yes, it's entirely legit, from Miller's Dark Knight Returns. Ironically it's part of a sequence showing incidences of copycat...
See, I had two thoughts on this. The first was, oh my god, this is tragic, those poor people why would he do this. The second was "If one kid got his parents killed by this and was inspired to be a vigilante, it'd be the most ironic thing I can imagine happening".
Isn't it ironic that almost nobody can use the word "ironic" correctly?
If you wanna see the inane stupidity of the American public (especially the Conservatives), just watch how venomously they blame comic books and video games over the next 72 hours. It is enough to make you sick.
The only thing that's wrong with the Second Amendment is that so few people appreciate its importance anymore.
What the actual Fuck?
This is exactly the sort of thing that happens in countries with such Lax gun laws.
Yeah. The UK has rampant stabbings instead. That's MUCH more civilized.
Look at england. Our gun laws are strict as hell. We have maybe one or two incidents of gun crime A YEAR. Only one or two people is killed in the instances, on average. If the US had stricter gun control, of course there would be less fucking gun crime. You can access guns but making it harder to do so means shit like this DOESN'T HAPPEN.
Who gives a fuck about "gun" crime? You should be looking at overall violent crime, and in that respect, despite the Crips and Bloods constantly warring with each other in Oakland, and despite the Zetas and the Gulf cartel slaughtering each other and getting God knows how many cops and civilians caught in the crossfire, we're STILL doing a hell of a lot better than you are.
Someone shoots and kills 5 people in america, Nobody makes a big deal outside of the state it occurs in, cuz gun crime happens. In england, two people get shot in one incident and the entire nation is on it's toes and made aware of this tragedy.
That's because your media have an anti-gun agenda. Can you imagine what the USA would be like if every news channel was as bad as MSNBC?
All I can think of is how this wouldn't have happened in a country without such lax gun laws.
Wasn't there some incident in Scandinavia a while back...?
we don't make a habbit of giving anyone a gun if they have money and can wait three days.
Neither does the US.
Same thing here in the Great White North, buddy. Impossible to get a gun, very little gun related crimes.
That's because you're too busy clubbing baby seals.
the US leads the "first world" in gun crime by a LOT
But we're way behind in stabbings.
The ironic thing is, by this point domestic crowd attacks have become about as passe as an atrocity can be. We get at least three or four a year worldwide (guesstimate based on memory) to the point where I can't remember all of them.
How is this ironic?
Guns should be illegal for civilians to own. You think I'm not respecting the victims by saying that? The victims wouldn't've been murdered if guns were illegal. Neither would any of the others killed by the frequent gun crimes that occur in the US every year.
If guns were illegal, there wouldn't be nearly as many victims for you to demand we "respect" by ignoring the reason.
You wouldn't be saying that if you had the slightest fucking clue what the actual results of gun laws are.
The terrible terrible (yet beautiful) irony is that the dude probably killed some kids parents in front of him therefore creating a reason for this kid to become a vengeance fueled hero.
Captain Marvelous beat you to it.
And that's not what irony is.
I remember back when The Dark Knight was all the hype, some fucking shitbag in Holland painted his face Joker-style
Dude, have some respect for Heath Ledger. He's dead now, and what did he ever to you, anyway?
Oh wait, you said HOLLAND. It thought it was Hollyw... you know what? Never mind.
2:And already one asshole is using this to further an agenda, saying what amounts to (among other things) "well if the victims had guns, someone could have stopped the shooter."
Telling the truth makes you an "asshole" in Leftopia. Got it.
You want logic? Do you think this guy would have been able to stab a dozen people to death and wound another dozen within a couple of minutes?
Sure, unless the local chapter of the NRA had decided to see Batman that night.
It's funny how nobody goes on shooting sprees at those NRA meetings.
You have ZERO reason to have as lax gun laws as you do,
Except all those pesky things called "facts", which prove that stricter gun laws produce increases in violent crime. But who cares about facts, right?
and I will forever stand in judgement of the U.S who get all heartbroken and dismayed when these horrible things happen as if there was nobody ever telling them why they happened.
It's video games!
No wait, it's Lady Gaga!
Yeah. Keep pretending that you know the reason.
Ignorance will always be your ally Mr. Gun Rights, but your vocal defence of weapons that are a fun hobby for most in your country won't be anywhere near as vocal as the cries of the mother whose infant was shot at point blank range.
How about all those victims of violent crime committed with non-firearm weapons? They don't matter, right?
the irony that the tragedy mimics the Batman origin story
Thats still 40% of the entire European population under one roof. Thats why European style health care will never work here- there are simply too many people under a single governmental entity. The population of europe is spread out among like 40 sovereign countries, the US is not.
Uh, you're missing some key bits here:
1) The population of the US is spread out over 50 supposedly sovereign entities called "states"
2) European-style health care will never work here because IT DOESN'T WORK, not because of any demographic reasons. Of course, our own HC system doesn't work either, but that's a totally different issue...
I didn't say that it would make all crime go away. Guns don't lower peoples propensity for violence, but it gives them a capacity to perform greater harm. Guns aren't hard to use, they don't take much skill. It gives people the ability to cause a great amount of harm without much thought.
It also makes it that much easier for the rest of us to stop them.
Smoking and drinking don't kill a dozen unsuspecting people within a matter of minutes.
No, their death tolls are a few orders of magnitude higher.
There will come a time when your country will have to wake up and realise there's more to life then being armed to the teeth.
Yeah. Getting rich is also high on the priorities list, although nothing tops ensuring that we're the ones who get into heaven when the Rapture comes this December.
8775 murders in the U.S. by firearm in 2011 alone.
34 in Switzerland
615 in England, Wales, and Scotland
428 in France
953 in Germany
Added all together, it doesn't even come to HALF of the amount in the U.S.
I like the part where it said "murders" and "by firearm", and completely ignored robberies, rapes, stabbings, crossbow violence, etc.
you know .... I'm all for our right to own and use firearms .... but really? you can legally buy explosives .... >.> I'm kind thinking that a normal person shouldn't have access to any kind of explosive unless they're job requires it (like mining off the top of my head)
A Class 3 permit IS almost impossible to get unless your job requires it, so... problem solved!
Oh wait, apparently, those sorts of laws don't work. Who would have thought?
i can think of no good reason why any one would need a grenade, or a Claymore mine (which are worse), unless your some nut job in the hills
Then you clearly haven't seen enough zombie movies.
Zombies are serious business here in 'Murica.
It covers a lot more than just explosives, obviously. Fully automatic weapons, silencers, flame-throwers, grenade launchers, ect.
You can make a flamethrower out of a Zippo, a super soaker, and some duct tape. Fill it up with gasoline/kerosene/Everclear/whatever and let it rip.
http://en.wikipedia.or/wiki/Gun_violence#Homicide - That's a link to a table with homicide firearm rate per capita. Numbers are from a UN report, so fairly accurate, although I admit its 10 years old now so perhaps outdated. The USA has 2.97 gun murders per 100,000 in a year
Blah blah gun homicides blah blah, nothing about overall violent crime rate.
OH BOY, HERE WE GO AGAIN.
The right to bear arms does not mean that he has the right to carry his weapons to a theater.
So, you're going to tell him sternly not to do it again, and next time he wants to go on a murderous rampage, he'll leave his firearms at home right? ^_^
No, he's going to be somebody's girlfriend in prison for a very long time. Or he'll get the chair. That's what usually happens to mass murderers in this country.
