No more Nostalgia Critic, thoughts? (To Boldly Flee spoilers!)

In case you didn't see (Which wouldn't be surprising considering how new the video is) Doug Walker has officially announced that the Nostalgia Critic is done.

Doug explains that he wants to end the series before he grinds the character into the ground and that he will be keeping That Guy With The Glasses website up and plans to make a new show in the future to take the Critics spot.

This all came after the finale for the mini-series/movie thing "To Boldly Flee" showed

So what are your thoughts on this, do you think it was a good idea? Sad that the Critic isn't going to make new videos? What do you really think?

I personally understand the reasoning and hope his new shows work out, but god damn NC episodes were one of the highlights of my weekly routine.

I've not watched To Boldly Flee yet, was waiting for them all to be uploaded so I can watch it back to back, but I do think it's a good idea for him to stop with the NC vids, I think they haven't been as good in a long while now, the last one I watched was Signs which was ok, his Alien Resurrection one was the last good one I thought. It's the same with AVGN although I know James is doing more vids (plus the film) just releasing them less often.

It is kinda sad to see them stop though because (not to sound melodramatic or anything but) I discovered them both along with Zero Punctuation in '07 when I was in a accident was just so unhappy and miserable for fucking months, their videos cheered me up a fair bit.

Looking forward to seeing what he has plans for future content.

Well shit. This is half depressing, half excellent.

I mean, I've known about the site for less than 2 years. I feel like I've missed out on everything now that it's over. Then again, it's good that it's ended before it got old.

People like Doug Walker and the rest of the crew need to evolve over time. If that means ending their shows and moving onto something else, I'm behind them on that.

I say, good luck to Doug.

That's sad to hear because I really like the Nostalgia Critic, but it can't go on forever. I respect him for ending it because he feels that you shouldn't continue with something just because it's popular even if you feel it's done.

Nostalga Critic was getting stale (as Ive said a million times before) so this isn't bad

but what does this mean for the rest of the shows? I didn't watch NC anymore but shows like Todd in the shadows, Brows held high and Nostalga Chick I watched regurly

as long as Nostalga Chick is still around...her shows keep getting better IMO

Noooooooooooo!
I only just got into it!

At first, I was seriously bummed. But I understand Doug's reasoning behind this decision. And like he said, Nostalgia Critic isn't GONE, he just won't be a weekly thing anymore.

And I'm intrigued by this new project he's working on. Buying an actual studio? Whatever he's working on, it's going to be big, if he's willing to sink THIS much money into it.

So yeah, slightly depressing, but overall, I think this is probably a good move.

Nooooooooo

So long as a review comes up every once in a while fine then

FINALLY. Apart from the All Good Things riff with his Scooby Doo review, his other recent reviews have been garbage. Time to move on.

They are still going to be there for as long as the site is there. While they are going to stop producing new eps of NC (reguraly, anyway), the entire site is still going to continue on for the forseeable future.

OT: Kind of sad. I liked the show, but I understand the reasons, and the Scooby Doo ep was a damn fine ending, so at least we got one of those. Looking forward to his next project, though. :D

Shame. I'll admit I'm skeptical. I've heard that reasoning a lot about halted internet creations and it usually translates into "I'm bored. Can I do something else now?" It makes more sense in that he says he's done all he can with Nostalgia Critic, but is going to keep digging that one note joke Bum Review character around. Moreover, why not just pass the torch to one of many I'm sure would like to take the spot?

Still, it's his prerogative, and at least unlike so many fanfics and webcomics, he's not leaving a story hanging. I'll admit I prefer Lindsay's Nostalgia Chick videos myself for going the more analytical and educational route rather than a harsher MSTing of things.

Hope it doesn't start a trend either. Yahtzee's been milking the same material for years now and I'd really hate to see him go because he's tired of making cock and ball jokes.

It'd been getting ground into the ground for sometime now.
Still, good he did decide to end it before it got really really bad.

yeah, I mean just because he stops doesnt mean the rest of the site should...as I said there was better stuff anyway

even if he did end the site they are all on blip anyway so I assume they would remain there

Aww... I too have only just started catching up on him. Oh well.

First nintendo power then this.

apocalypse or not 2012 sucks.

Capcha: Jump off

this thing just wants me to be depressed

I suspect we'll get another Jay-Z situation. Almost ten years since he "retired"

No Nostalgia Critic?
No Spoony?
Angry Joe on Youtube?

Bye Bye TGWGT, I knew ye well.

Most bittersweet moment of 2012 for me. Gonna miss the NC a lot, as he shaped much of the way I look at stories and media, but I am looking forward a ton to what's coming in the future. The NC really was a major influence on my life, and I doubt I'll ever forget him. Particularly his Old vs. New videos, which were always amazing.

Gonna still keep running my show until he hires me.

Sorry for the shameless self-promotion.

*sigh* it's sad to see the character go, but I can understand his reasoning. Eventually he's got to run out of stuff to be nostalgic about. I'll be interested to see what else he comes up with.

Now if only he'd get rid of that obnoxious "Bum" character while he's at it.

Vault101:

but what does this mean for the rest of the shows?

Ummm...Since the site is staying around and it's only the Critic that's over...You know, exactly what it said on the tin....

Altorin:

Angry Joe on Youtube?

YAY! Actually, I would be happy if he just went away period, but I'll take what I can get.

Sad but for the best. The Nostalgia Critic was starting to get really stale and I could see that they've been trying to really hard to keep it alive for the past few months by doing something "new" and "original" each episode with it blowing up in their faces. Still, it's gonna be weird not watching the big NC on wednesdays.

Ah well. There's always Nostalgia Chick, Todd in the Shadows, JessuOtaku, PushingUpRoses, Linkara, Angry Joe, and Rap Critic to watch! :D

Also, I'm eager to see what's gonna happen with the new show. And I'm also eager to find out what will happen to the next anniversary show. :P

pffffft there are other (dare I say better) shows

Nostalga Chic...brows held high..todd in the shadows...

NC was getting stale anyway

I had only recently started watching Nostalgia Critic. But I did enjoy the little I did see. It's a bit sad but respectable that he ended Nostalgia Critic when he felt that it had run its course.

'tis better for a good thing to end before it gets bad(er), than to have it well and truly run into the ground. There's probably a better way of saying it.

I think this was a good move.

unrelated but the site is seriously DYING for a rediegn..to somone new to the whol e"internet show" thing it really does not encourage "branching out" into the other (arguable better) shows like the ones you mentioned

It was bittersweet for me.

I've always loved the Nostalgia Critic. I've loved almost all his reviews. He introduced me to internet reviewers.

But, his stuff WAS starting to get very samey. Scooby Doo was great, but it HAD to end.

I'm just glad he got such a glorious sendoff in the form of To Boldy Flee.

Bravo Doug, Bravo.

That's really sad... I really liked Nostalgia Critic.. *Depressed* :C

This kinda depresses me. I first discovered Channel Awesome and it's many contributors not even a year ago and now the only reason I even know what that site is, is no longer going be a constant presence there. Apart from some specials no doubt!

But at the same time I will agree that NC hasn't been all that funny for a while now. So it's probably for the best. At least AT4W is still there!

Slightly off topic: My only question now is: If the Nostalgia Critic could be considered the de-facto leader of the critics, who will lead them now?

My money's on Linkara!

Zachary Amaranth:

Altorin:

Angry Joe on Youtube?

YAY! Actually, I would be happy if he just went away period, but I'll take what I can get.

Why exactly? He is one of the few people who's reviews I actually watch when I I'm considering buying a new game rather than just for comedy, and I normally find myself agreeing with him.

OT:I do think the critic was getting stale so I can see why he deiced to be mostly done with that persona. I'm waiting to see what he does next, that should be interesting.

I used to watch it back when it started in 2008. But since then I've stopped sucking so I can't be more glad that it's over. I won't have to hear about it anymore.

Champagne anyone?

EDIT: Wait. I already posted on this thread didn't I? Crap. What is wrong with me? Whatever, both statements work.

"You are tearing me apart Doug!!!"

Sorry but it had to be done and actually i respect him even more for his decision to end the series on a high note. Still it is a real shame since i really liked all of his episodes.

May the crazy be with you critic

It's a good move. He needs to move from being a content producer to a content recruiter/manager. He should by now hopefully have the funds to actually take some risks and hopefully invested to make himself financially secure.

Remember that his character is simply built off his childhood. Not based on every single movie created in the past. Once his childhood runs out...well that kinda ruins the nostalgia critic.

On the plus side we will probably still see his character in other shows once in a while so I doubt he will be 100% gone.

First that whole deal with Spoony, now this. 2012 has been a baaad year for TGWTG.

I dunno about you guys, but the whole "internet reviewer" schtick actually hasn't been doing it for me lately. It's been real popular over the last 7 or so years, but now that "angry swearing reviews of games/movies/tv shows/music/anime/retro media" sort of genre has just slowly been dying off in interest for me. I think there needs to be a drastic change in formula for it to survive. Does anyone else get where I'm coming from with this?

Indeed. Rap Critic deserves WAY more views than he usually gets.

Also, your avatar... D'AAAWWW... :D
