Staff Emeritus Posts: 1124 Joined: 7 Jul 2006 | We've had our trusty forums for over a year now, and as our community has grown, so have our guidelines for posting!
Interested in signing up? Go here. Standard info, and if you've used the WarCry network in the past, you can log in with that username and password, since we're one big happy family. After that, you're good to hop into and start any number of great discussions.
As far as actual posting goes, we keep things a bit laid back around here, and as such, I'm loathe to call the following rules; they're guidelines. We are all board warriors of action; rules lawyering does not become us. So, I'll keep it short and easy for everyone:
- Grammar and spelling. Everyone who moderates the boards is an editor. Bad spelling and improper grammar physically hurts us, precious. Respect yourself and others; take the time to check your spelling and how your post is worded. Also, one exclamation point or question mark is enough at the end of a sentence.
- Quoting. Don't break up a person's post into individual sentences and clauses. It clutters up the page and makes it harder for other users to enjoy the forums. If you wish to respond to a particularly lengthy post, just quote the first paragraph for reference and address the entire post.
- Mod sass. When the moderators put on their referee's shirts, anything they say is non-negotiable. If you disagree with their conduct, send them a private message.
- Flaming and trolling. Let's keep things civil, here. Responding to someone's post just to attack him is unacceptable.
- Rants. We're a content-heavy site. You probably feel strongly about things. It's OK to post your thoughts about the issues that affect you, but ranting about how EA ran over your puppy without backing it up isn't how we work here.
- Original posts. If you're starting a thread, make sure your first post seeds the thread with something to discuss. If you want to talk about a game, give us some background or post a mini-review. When you start a thread, ask yourself why other people should care.
- Polls. We're now yellow carding and one-day banning people for making stupid polls. A "stupid poll" is pretty much anything where the choices are slanted or myopic, or otherwise deemed stupid by your friendly neighborhood moderator staff. Be warned.
Act like an adult, and I don't swing the banstick. We're intelligent, responsible people, all of us. We know how to treat one another, and we know how to disagree respectfully without things turning nasty. This is our lawn, we invite you to play here, but be polite and follow our rules or find somewhere else to hang.
Also, there are no signatures on purpose. Don't add your own.
Getting to Know Your Moderators
We have a team of three moderators. They'll be your go-to guys regarding new forum ideas and issues as they pop up. They are:
- Jordan "Ice-Nine" Deam - We call him the Bear Trap. You don't want to find out why. He is heading up the moderator team.
- wilsonscrazybed - He's the first of the Red Guard, a community-based Neighborhood Watch.
- nilcypher - The newest addition to the Red Guard.
Other Moderator-like People
- Russ "Russ Pitts" Pitts - Russ is above all this, but is more than capable of helping out on the moderation front.
- Julianne "Andraste" Greer - Julianne is in charge of everything here. She is to be loved and feared.
- Jason "Virgil" Smith - Jason is the programmer who built the forums. He has godlike powers here.
- Jeff "Spinwhiz" Palumbo - Jeff does marketing. It's in his best interest to not have the forums be stupid.
- ... and more. Chances are if they have a gold name, they have moderator powers.
Other Fun Stuff
- Yellow card/red card. This is the mods' fun way of giving out warnings and bans. Like in soccer, a yellow card is a stern warning, not to be taken lightly. A red card means the user was banned for the post he made.
- Profiles! Edit your profiles here.
- Titles. All of the post count-based titles have been discovered. Will we add more? Who knows? Special titles are awarded for special circumstances - keep an eye out for contests.
- Forum Markup. You can find documentation on the tags our forums support here.
