Been playing for 14 years now. It's a really great hobby which lets me use all that pent up creativity and imagination to create fascinating worlds and people to explore together with friends. To experience adventure and excitement together with friends is great. It's also great to play a game which only limits are your own imagination, being able to do whatever you want without the constraints of a rigid ruleset or a game's programming.
Yeah, I play DnD. Whenever i get the chance actually.
I have no real favourite class, but I do like stealthy characters (I love games like Thief and Splinter Cell). I didn't have any interest in spellcasters before I played a Mage in WoW. Now I think I'm getting addicted to hurling fire at my foes.
I've been playing for about 20 years off and on. Mostly on for most of that, but the last couple have been harder for us to get together. Damn.. I'm old... pretty soon it'll be the geek retirement home for me. When I started on DnD, I started with an older group with actual DnD. (The original) and on up to every version since. Starting up a new game (same old players) online soon. When I am not running the game, I tend to play useless characters. (I once played a street magician who got caught up with the group who thought I was a real mage. Managed to hide it prety well for about 4 sessions until my 'magic' supplies ran out. The only real magic I had was an oversized bag of holding I had kept in my robe to 'summon' useful items.. in a big puff of smoke of course.) Usually it's really bad thieves (rogues for you youngins) that cause more grief than anything.
Haha mono thats awesome! Yeah the one guy that allways plays a rouge in our game allways manages to get caught.. Meaning the other players have to bail him out one way or another.
And the whole "It's also great to play a game which only limits are your own imagination, being able to do whatever you want without the constraints of a rigid ruleset or a game's programming is my fav thing about it.
Im writing an adventure involving a Blackguard who is trying to suck the world dry of its life force and use it to summon an army of evil.
I've been playing on and off again since 2001, during my college years. I love to play but getting a good group together is tough. I'll try most classes at least one time.
Started playing a few years ago. We're lucky to meet once a week at the moment.
I find the game enjoyable for the fact that your imagination is the limit...but it certainly takes a great deal of time to make a great campaign. Unless you're incredibly good at improv.
Been playing a good four years now. Fun times, although the games have only about 2 hours worth of game content, most of our 5 hour sessions are spent filled with Firefly refernces. Like my friends +2 spiked chain of command. :P
I've been playing for just over a year I think. I love it. I'm an actress, so I really enjoy the role-playing side of things. I've got two and a half games going, and by summer I'll probably try DMing.
I've been playing the game for like 3 years, but I've only had an actual gaming group for a year and a half. before then, it was Play By Post, because I lived in a pathetic jerkwater town where the old people watch fox news or PBS and the young people either do drugs, play sports, or are on the math team, or all three.
It's a great hobby, and the group I'm involved in is also pretty much my sole circle of friends on campus (or anywhere, for that matter. I'm a fairly insular person, mostly because most of the people around me seem to be blithering idiots). I'm DMing, helping DM something else that gets run occasionaly, playing, and playing occasionaly in another game that's run occasionaly. I'm one of those guys that makes engaging characters with thought-out personalities, but cant do plot-hooky backstory, so I dont try to de-rail things.
I think I play a bit too much, but It's kind of unavoidable, with my group. Also, I'b beginning to think that the publishers honsestly dont care, at all, about making a good game anymore, and only want to make money (4th ed)

We've banned laptops with internet access from our gaming sessions due to people derailing the game via internet videos/references/whatever :-p
Also, a question that maybe fits best here - how is DnD *or any tabletop RPG, for that matter* via internet play? Most of my group will likely be scattering across the globe, and I'm wondering if it would work out to continue playing over the net.

Perhaps find a site with a dice roller and use an IM.
I have been playing for 10 years now. I have gotten into more of the versatile power gaming with high emphasis on story.
I play it occasinaly when there's nothing else to do. The only other time i've been playing it often was when I was 13. I always have to be DM because my mates have the story telling ability of R.L. Stine.
I never got into D&D. I bought some books in 3.5ed and hoped to join a group, but issues with deathly allergies and the GM's cats kinda forced me outta the group. In the old days, Battletech was my thing... Before the F'ing Dark Ages ruined it at least.

My friends and I can very rarely get together on our non work days, so we are starting up a group online. This: http://downloads.redblade.org/ is one of the better free online character generators I have found. Once created, the char sheets can be copied into any other text thingy. We also found this: http://www.nbos.com/download/download-screenmonkey.htm to use online for the visual side. The lite version if free and seems decent enough for what you may need. Only the DM needs the program, everyone else logs into the game with a browser. If you have free time, a website creator (or notepad if you are old school) and a desire to make the game a bit easier, you can use a free web hosting service to post up stuff related to your game to make it easy for the players.. and you.. to reference. I am kinda curious, what unique sorts of rules have you 'veterans' created? I'll start; one that we do (when I DM) is to not allow the players to really know the true value of their magical items. I'll give them a code instead. For example, if a player finds a +2 longsword, instead of telling them such, I will tell them they find a sword with a faint blue glow and some faint runes etched in the center then give them the code WS14 or however I decide to do it for that campaign. After that, they declare an attack and tell me what weapon they are using. When they tell me their roll and total of bonuses, I add in the swords bonus without telling them what it was. That way, they never really know, it adds 'realism' to the game a bit more, and makes the weapons more mysterious. Also, we usually give a toss to the weapons in the book and make our own with our own rules. (like a cursed sword that caused the wielder to transform into a werewolf for d4 rounds when he rolled a crit.. he would then automatically attack the nearest living being friend or foe.. that one I had nearly forgotten about due to this players complete inability to get a crit for 5 sessions.) hehe, I find that randomly rolling dice and smiling or chuckling softly is a great way to keep the players on their toes during a crawl.
Yeah I do that..Sort of. When they find a +3 sword for example I'll say "You find a very well crafted sword and it appears to give off a faint glow" and for rings and stuff I just say "You found a ring"
Potions can be fun becuase at first when I said "you found 3 potions" they would say they put their finger in and taste it giving them a little sample. Fair enough. So I started to throw in some posions and other nasties. Needless to say after a few "How do I feel after I've tasted this one" "You feel sick..Fort save" they handed it to the wizzard to take care of.
We actually have a semiweekly gaming group here at The Escapist offices. We use the company boardroom on friday nights and play in big leather chairs with a whiteboard for important orc-bashing encounter planning. We've played D&D 2nd edition, D&D 3.5, Cyberpunk 2020, and some obscure indie and retro RPGs (Hard Nova, TSR's Conan (1984), Aftermath etc).
Joe Blancato, our loveable content editor, is exceptionally noted for his short lifespan, while our E-I-C is feared for her chaotic evil.
GenHellspawn: I play it occasinaly when there's nothing else to do. The only other time i've been playing it often was when I was 13 (when I hadn't discovered Starcraft yet, although it wasn't even out yet.). I always have to be DM because my mates have the story telling ability of R.L. Stine.
I'm level 37 ninja :P
I have to DM because my fiancee' can tell a good story but tends to fall asleep if she reads for longer than 20 minutes. Rather cute but more than a bit frustrating.

Awesome reference! "Its a chain I'm gunn beat you with till you know who's in rutting command!" (or similar)
Been playing DnD for about 5 years now. Great hobby. When you get a good story, setting and characters. Can be annoying when one of your group keeps Team Killing cos of his alignment. Or killing NPC's that get us in tones of shit. Or trying to seduce his way through an entire village claiming he's some kind of god/spirit and that they should harbour his offspring. That guy always could mess up an campaign... fun times.

This sounds amazing... board room DnD. Leather chairs, a lot of ale and snacks and group of friends. If only I could hijack a suitable location. Pub function room would probably be best.

Yeah, we had a guy like that... I just kept killing his characters until he got smart and made one a little less of an A-hole. He ended up eventually playing one of the best paladins I've ever DMed. Heroic and everything.. That character died after accidentally killing an evil man who was beating his wife and then turned himself into the local authorities knowing the party could get him out with no one the wiser AND knowing that he would be hung for murder (the wife beater was wealthy and had fooled the locals into thinking he was a pretty swell guy). One of the best RP moments we ever had and it was that a-hole kid who suddenly just stopped being an a-hole once he realized it wasn't all about just killing everyone he met.

I'll be over soon!!
Man that sounds awesome.
As will I, if I ever find the headquarters and bone up on my ninja skills... Those are mostly Dex based right? ;)
I've always wanted to play as a Chaotic Nutral Mind Controler but my friend doesn't trust me with the power. Bwahahaha! I'm just fooling qaround. Although I do like the stories that I hear from the game.
I remember this little red book. Where you could only get to level five. Dwarves and Elves were classes. Oh those halcyon days of yore, where have you gone?
I actually stopped playing DnD a while back, though I briefly looked into 3.5. I do still like getting into online games of Savage Worlds though. They work out quite well on skype.

Wow, that's quite awesome. It also gives me hope for certain players of mine...
Then I played other roleplaying games, and lost interest. Then hated it.
I roleplay a lot more since I moved away from D&D.
I always find myself playing around with stats too much with D&D.
Now I run a larp system. Some of the players are in a D&D game. Most of the time, they talk about how awesome larp is instead of play D&D. It makes me proud. I hope it annoys the DM, who doesn't like larp, and has spent a huge amount on splatbooks.

Nice hate there but the roleplaying is only as good as the story being told.
So does anyone here play DnD?
I've been playing for almost a year now and I dm too. I play bards mostly but I also like a good fighter.
Anyone else enjoy DnD? Its like Neverwinter nights but cooler =)
