Hmmm, giver her Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, Beserk, a little Hellsing never hurt anyone and maybe some Initial D to get that street racing fix. Wait? No fighting?! What is that, like a hentia or something?
Well, Studio Ghibli is pretty much the tops. I've seen almost all of it. Most of the things that come to mind are either violent or stupid though. Death Note will be recommended to you by everyone, but it's violent at times. Busou Renkin is great, but mostly fight scenes (that are awesome), same with Helsing and other things that come to mind. The only non-violent anime I can think of right now is like... Golden Boy, and that's just horrible. And PurpleRain, it's 'hentai'. Not that I've watched any, I just take a basic Japanese class. (We're learning verbs tomorrow!)
You could try The Place Promised in our Early Days, that movie by Makoto Shinkai. It's darker than a lot of Miyazaki's work, but it's an amazing movie.
Yeah sure, like I haven't heard that one before.
Nice bait there. ^_^; | |
im not sure if these arnt classified as "super anoying/girly girls" and such but i for one suggest lucky star... or azumanga daioh... both are funny if you are into their type of humor ^w^ hehe... like sakaki getting bitten by every cat she seems to lay hands on XD also whats wrong with hentai? you act as though its horendously bad to like it... sure it isnt exactly "cool" but neither is incriminateing your self by mentioning it then abruptly saying you have never seen any when you say a hentai anime by name... tho i for one am not into hentai anime... im a hentai fan art girl ^w^
I would have to recommend the best anime ever, Fooly Cooly (FLCL). There is a little fighting but it is also very dramatic. The only problem is there's only 6 episodes, though no matter how many times you watch it it is still as good as the first.
Never been an anime fan but Afro Samurai is freakin' sweet. And Cowboy Bebop has a great soundtrack.
I've only watched like three episodes of Golden Boy, but I don't think it counts as hentai.
The only Anime I've ever liked was Death Note. It's smart enough to probably be liked by your girlfriend. I know I showed my girlfriend Death Note and she can't keep her hands off the manga and her eyes off the old show too. It's very "smart", as opposed to a lot of Anime where the characters are all "ITS OVER NINE THOUSAAAND" and beat each other senseless.
Ouran High School Host Club
As a general rule (and I'm not trying to be sexist, so excuse me), Shoujo(SP?)-Anime/Manga tends to have less fighting and more about the developement of characters, romance, etc. This is because it is meant for teenage girls. Shonen-Manga/Anime is usually more action oriented, though mind-f--kers like "Death Note" also fall unto the Shonen category. This is often meant for teenage boys. Note, again, that these fall into stereotypes. There is always going to be anime that crosses the so-called barriersAs for advice, well, sorry, but I can't give you much... a good small anime (12 episodes), with some violence (but not much) is "Tsukihime."
I'm going to second (technically third) the Cowboy Bebop suggestion. Yea, it is action oriented, usually at least one good action or chase scene in each episode, but it seems to appear to a lot of people who generally aren't into most anime, from my experience. Story, music, animation, all top notch, and lacks a lot of the turn offs that many anime have (particularly Shounen). FLCL is wonderful too, but it might be a bit too weird to try to appeal to someone who isn't all that into anime. It is a great series and has outstanding style, but it just probably isn't a good place to start. Samurai Champloo might do for the same reason Bebop can, although I always felt in general that it felt too much like Bebop, and ultimately was like Shinichiro Watanabe paying homage to himself, which made it all feel kind of weird. Paranoia Agent was also mentioned, which has very little action (except some towards the end when the show goes so far off the deep end it's amazing). But it's an interesting, weird, and short anime. And Death Note as well as Monster may also be worth looking into, although I have mixed feelings on Death Note, and have not actually seen Monster, but always hear praise of it. I give Wolf's Rain a nod for it's sheer beauty, I loved it's look and feel, but thought the series as a whole fell short.
If you want to check it out, you can preview Gankutsuou here. It's got some amazing design and animation. The visual style reminds me of The Beatles' Yellow Submarine.
Something that a girl would like? Hm... well I suggest you try Clannad, or Kanon(2006) or something.
Why is it that all Discusions on anime turn to Hentai. Very disturbing. Anyway the magazine I'm reading has a paragraphy detailing the Anime series Cromarite High School. If you can beleive the Official Xbox Magazine than this series is an "ultra-surreal slapstick comedy with references to pop culture, both from west and east". Very enthralling
Because people who like making blanket statements about the Japanese find hentai to be an easy target.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, its an old one but okish i guess for not much fighting. however my favorites are : Full Metal Alchemist, Hell Sing, 7 Samurai, cowboy bebop.
Remember, no violence right. Afro Samurai was chock-a-block full of violence. I would recommend Ergo Proxy. If your girlfriend is the thinking type, she'll might like it, though it can get confusing at times.
I highly recommend Genshiken. It's about a university anime/manga/video game club, so its' kind of like looking in a mirror (for some of us at least). No combat, no magical girls, just plain hillarious. As a minor warning, there are a lot of references to porn, though not any porn in the show itself. For any weirdo-fundies that don't even like to hear about such things, avoid at your own loss. Also, Full Metal Panic is another great series. There's a fair amount of combat in it, but there's quite a bit of other bits to it; also, its' offshoot Full Metal Panic: Fumofu is the majority of the comedic bits left out of the manga-to-anime conversion, and is HILARIOUS. The big upside is right now you can get the whole Full Metal Panic first season for $40(US) if you look hard enough.
A good one for her might be Millennium Actress. It's actually a brilliant drama. Peter Chung's Aeon Flux series is cool sci-fi with many "what if" scenarios spattered across the entire run. It's fun because many of the episodes have nothing really to do with each other. It's really easy to digest in small parts at whatever pace you feel like. Perfect Blue is a pretty awesome psychological thriller. The Animatrix is surprisingly good and very diverse. I just finished watching Appleseed: Ex Machina and thought it was superior to the first one. You're girlfriend will likely appreciate the strong female heroine while you can drool over the fantastic visual design. Seriously, this one looks so sweet. Other than that, you're best bet is to go to IMDB.com and peruse their top rated anime titles and pick a handful that interest you the most. Good luck!
I'd suggest Cardcaptor Sakura, but she might not like that as the main characters are quite girly.
You should give Haibane Renmei a try. I picked up the first DVD when it came out over here in the UK, watched itwith my girlfriend, and she enjoyed it so much, I had to import the rest of the series via eBay the next day :)
I'd just like to point out that this is the one post you have made in 4 years. I am I awe of your ability to not post. That is impresive. To be honest I always seem to start a post by quoting something I find interesting or funny. I was going to recomend Death Note. No real "Animeish" characters apart from a demon of some sort. Its a real on the edge of your seat drama/horror. You and your girl friend will probably keep on watching all night just to find out what happens next. On second thought that might not be a good thing.
Seconding Ouran High School Host Club and Death Note. Maybe Code Geass or XXXHolic/Tsubasa they tend to popular.
I had to read the whole thread to see if anyone had recommended this yet, and now that you have, I'll go ahead and second it. It was recommended to me by a friend who also turned me onto Hellsing, Bebop, and a few others, and I didn't even know what to expect. Very enjoyable.
I'd suggest "Fruits Basket", "Love Hina", perhaps try exposing her to some "Lain", see if that's to her taste. For movies, I'd go for "Grave of the Fireflys", "Spirited Away", "Howl's Moving Castle", and perhaps "Ghost in the Shell". If fighting is an option, and you want an Anime that you both have a decent chance to enjoy, "Tri-Gun", "Cowboy Bebop", and maybe "Neon Genesis Evangelion". Those all have a chunk of fighting in there, but they're pretty story driven and character based. I dunno, it really depends on what her tastes are.
look for stuff by the clamp studio, they're all women and girlyish and she might like it
I just finished watching Gankutsuou the other day, and I think it may be the best anime I've ever seen. Mind-blowingly good design, well crafted characters, and the story is so sad in places I was actually close to tears (and I'm a bloke). And to top it all, it's based on The Count Of Monte Cristo, one of the best books ever written.
If you want to break up, show her some Hentai. There was once this pretty cool series about a band called Prussian Blue. edit: oh, anime, I was talking comic books here.
Oh, and I thought I'd warn you about a Studio Ghibli movie you shouldn't see. 'Only Yesterday'. Not offensive or anything, just REALLY boring.
I love to see what gamer guys here think girls like to watch... Fufufu... Anyhow, I don't know if you could take it, but I really enjoyed Kokoro Library. (I still have trouble getting over the maid outfits, though... >.>)
I second Trigun. While there is fighting and some violence in it, it is mostly a character drama.
I'll go with everyone else that has said Cowboy Bebop. It has fighting, but it is very well done. Great soundtrack and I think it has very good character delevopment. I'd say it focuses more on how the characters interact rather than the fighting.

I want to find some anime that my girlfriend and I could watch together. The anime she has liked is exclusively Studio Ghibli stuff. Basically, she likes stuff that is not too fighting oriented, doesn't have super annoying/super girly characters and such...
Is there any other anime out there like Hayao Miyazaki's work?
