I really hope he wasn't on steroids. |
Muckraker Posts: 235 Joined: 4 Aug 2008 | I watched them at work, usually. I bartend and we had the only TV I can see on the Olympics most nights. It was enjoyable because everyone got into it and cheered and such. Don't see a lot of that here since I work in a military bar and everyone's favorite sports teams are different. |

Perhaps it was because I was younger, but I just found the sydney and athens olympics much more interesting, and didn't view it as such a display of corporate greed and manipulation. |

I never got into them, they were just annoying, repetitve and in most cases the sports are only interesting for competitors, their family, other want to be competitors and people going crazy with national pride. Yes i get it he can run really fast, why should i care? |
On the Record Posts: 5674 Joined: 2 Dec 2007 | Olympics were ok. No real feeling one way or the other (so I chose 'yes') but what happened behind the scenes with the Chinese politics pissed me right the fuck off. You would think the worlds media would have something to say about all of this but Nooo. |
Beat Writer Posts: 137 Joined: 16 Jul 2008 | I enjoyed them, but I think the public and especially the media over-hyped the opening ceremony. Ok so 2008 guys can beat a drum? Impressive yes, better than I can do. BUT HELLO PEOPLE!! IT IS THERE JOB!! THIS IS WHAT THEY DO 14 HOURS A DAY FOR YEARS!!! It's not like if this was just a side talent when they weren't working or something. |
Beat Writer Posts: 127 Joined: 26 May 2008 | Too much running, too much swimming, too much of people practising semi-obscure sports one after another where you can't tell what either one did differently but the judges give one guy a nine and the other a four. I mean, there's a reason that most Olympic sports only ever get broadcast during the Olympics. |

Yarp. I found the opening ceremony interesting in places (ok one place, the moveable type bit), in others it was shite. Some of the events were good to watch. Plus I pleased with how my old homeland (GB) did. But mostly it was kind of a big meh. Only watched bits and bobs. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1710 Joined: 2 Jan 2008 | I haven't paid much attention to the Olympics, but I did happen to catch Michael Phelps' big race against that French dick. My friends and I were cheering and hollering and carrying on the whole time. That's the only part I really remember. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 494 Joined: 4 Aug 2008 | I don't really see the point in the Olympics. You can try and way my opinion if you have a good reason for loving them. I certainly don't agree with Britain telling us how bad the credit crunch is every day and how our economy is suffering just to spend 9 Billion on them. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1664 Joined: 9 Aug 2008 | I put yes because of Michael Phelps, the Gymnastics and some of the Beach Volleyball matches, but other than that, all the sports that I cared about (wrestling, tae kwon do, fencing, and judo) were never aired on Television and I didn't get to see a single thing that I actually looked forward to. So its a yes and no answer and I am very pissed off at the NBC network for showing me fucking Ping Pong and god damn SPEED WALK RACING!!! AND SHITTING ON MY FACE BADMINTON! Instead of sports that are actually exciting to watch. |

Beat Writer Posts: 185 Joined: 12 Jun 2008 | I actually hate the olympics. I hate all the hype and all the commercialism and all of the excessive news coverage of...nothing much happening today, but "tomorrow >insert name of American olympian here< in >insert name of American olypmian's sport here< will defeat >insert name and country of best "acceptable to hate" olympian here<!!!!!!!" And oh yeah...the human rights abuses aren't limited to China, it's just fashionable/acceptable to hate the Chinese right now because Mattel didn't actually care how the Chinese factories made all that toy paint shiny and bright, just as long as it was shinier and brighter than anyone else's. Oh, yeah...and they poisoned your dog last spring, too, can't forget about that. Honestly? Do any of the people shouting the loudest about the probably under-age gymnasts on the Chinese team care about those little girls? Or do they care that thier team didn't get the medals those little girls earned? |
Copy Clerk Posts: 66 Joined: 27 Aug 2008 | Never watch the Olympics, here. It's kind of borderline-retarded how national governments actually care that people who happen to be born in their countries are talented at some arbitrary sport. Plus, I always thought the Chinese government were dicks, and putting them in charge of a party just gave them a chance to showcase themselves as the bunch of spaz-tards they are. Arresting people for legally registering for protests like we asked them to? Awesome. Trying to shove a half-blind granny into a "re-education" forced labour camp because she was upset about being forcibly evicted? Classy. The Western media is always eager to demonize China as much as possible, but the best they can do with all this ammunition is to bray about a lip-syncing girl and a bunch of underage gymnasts? /rant So, yeah. Screw the Olympics. |

Muckraker Posts: 346 Joined: 7 Jun 2008 | I thought the openning ceremony for the olympics was incredible (although it gets a bit boring after you watch for about an hour) and that there were a lot of interesting events. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2948 Joined: 21 May 2008 | I was sad that Canada earn so little medals. However, I was happy of their performance in the end. Doesn't matter, we will kick your ass in futur competitions. |
Muckraker Posts: 264 Joined: 17 Jul 2008 | The olympics... Interesting statistic: of all the 60-or-so applications for protests at the games that were filed by Chinese citizens, how many got approved? Here's a hint: it's less than 1. I think the problem with the Olympics this year were that everyone was too busy being suspicious of China to pay attention to anything other than really outstanding athletes. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 432 Joined: 24 Dec 2007 | I only watch the athletics, which were pretty awesome. A marathon(g) in just over two hours? holy crapola, that's some quality running right there. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4596 Joined: 25 Feb 2008 | I enjoyed the cycling very much. But couldn't shake the knowledge that the Chinese government made roughly 500'000 people homeless with no support or relocation program so they could build the stadiums. I don't fully understand why China got the games at all (actually, I do understand, I just cling to the belief that even if the world's politicians don't, the world's sportsmen cling to some level of integrity). |

Those guys are amazing. It doesn't really make for good TV but I definitely respect that these guys are amazing athletes. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 109 Joined: 14 May 2008 | Yeah they were good, I was glad Ireland got a silver in Boxing to hide how crap we were everywhere else. Everyone complaining about the Chinese gymnast under age pissed me off though, if you can perform to olympic standards you should be allowed to compete. |

Agreed, i was surprising how we weren't winning anything then Wham, the medals started coming in. I did watch the Olympics, but I'd of found more interesting if they'd of shown the less mainstream sports. I was told BMX was in the Olympics this year but for the life of me i didn't see any of it. |
Muckraker Posts: 344 Joined: 8 Feb 2008 | I like it now that we kicked those Australians arses. I couldn't believe how they reacted when we pulled ahead in the medals, arrogant bastards |

I know its been four days since they ended but I've decided to post this thread anyway...
So, did anyone hate the olympics.
I know I did, its not that I don't have upmost respect for my fellow (wo)man or any national pride but I just found the games annoying, sorta like a period that comes every four years.
It really messed up my work schedual, I had to work 2p.m-10p.m, istead of my regular 8-4 (everyone knows people like to hang out with their friends early in the afternoon) because my boss like to watch the Games and needed me to watch the store when I got home there was my mom and dad and sister watching the games like a family which made me feel great since they didn't bug me to spend time with them anymore.
Anyway what did you think about the olympics vote or post your opinion or both.
