But I've watched movies about deadly cows, so I guess I shouldn't pretend I have standards. Tried Phantasm and Prince of Darkness, hated them both, but The Descent is brill and Event Horizon is damn fun eye candy. Not familiar with The Last Broadcast or A Tale of Two Sisters, but I shall investigate further. |

Also i find facehuggers to be the single most creepy thing ever invented. marebito isn't all that scary, but gives you LOTS of shivers down the spine. And in the case of nice jump scares, seek out One Missed Call (the original by Miike): Not only that the film has "fun" heartattack-scares, it also makes fun of all these "Ghost with long hair in some piece of technology" Movies like the Ring in a sarcastic way |

How did I know that would turn up? Not really scary but highly horrifying for all the wrong (or right depending on you point of view) reasons. Wolf Creek, one of those "It could actually happen..." movies based on real life serial killers in the Australian outback. Will make you think twice before accepting help from strangers. Hide and Seek, De Niro and Dakota Fanning. Well acted and very scary especially cause its a kid doing the scaring. |

Maybe it's the puppetry, I mean, there's no CG or anything, so it's all so visceral rather than cheesy. |

On the Record  Posts: 5973 Joined: 7 Feb 2008  | I honestly wouldn't reccomend Dog Soldiers, it's not scary, it feels stupid. But that directors next film The Descent, is VERY scary and has some great images and scares, just turn it off as soon as you "think" it's over, that ending is better. Session 9 is good if you like subtle scares and find old Mental Institutions scary. Jacobs Ladder, the film that inspired the Silent Hill games is pretty good. Audition, japanese flick, is interesting as it starts out like an Indie Romantic Comedy then turns into a Noir Mystery and ends like a terrifying Nightmare. The shift in tone is what makes it really scary. John Carpenters "The Thing" is brilliant, especially if you like freaky deaky monster design and movies about paranoia. In the Mouth of Madness is alright, especially if you like H.P. Lovecraft, but it's not brilliant. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is very, very raw, suprisingly violent and very scary because of that. If you're choosing between the North American version of The Ring and Ringu, I reccomend the NA version, it's got tighter film making and better acting. The Hills Have Eyes remake is amusing, not that scary but it's got some great scene work. Videodrome, a David Cronenberg Classic, is very good, not exactly "scary" but very cool. Braindead (if you can find it, otherwise settle for Dead Alive) rocks the show, but it fits in the Evil Dead 2 category. The original Dawn of the Dead is pretty good and fairly bleak. Silent Hill has a piss poor plot but the visuals make it worth watching at least once. Black Sheep is truly silly and very gory. |

Senior Editor Posts: 2280 Joined: 9 Jan 2007 | Oh, HELL, no, I am not watching Oldboy. I know more than enough about that to know that there are some things that simply cannot be unseen. The Thing is a great choice, one of my favorites. Alien, too. Haven't seen either in a while, so it might be time to roll them out. I think Wolf Creek had been built up too much for me before I watched it. It was well done, very sparse and tense, but I was ultimately unsatisfied. I think I simply went in with the wrong expectations. May is brilliant, and surprisingly subtle. Let me make a recommendation of my own: Venom. Creative kills and one or two truly horrifying moments. The story of the villain's creation is a bit silly, but surprisingly well-done film, just the same. |

What's wrong with Oldboy? I thought it rocked the show, it's just more of a NeoNoir mystery than a horror movie. What scene are you referring to. Oh, if you enjoy excessive Gore and S&M check out Ichi the Killer, but if you don't care about gore, DO NOT WATCH IT! I saw an edited version and that pointed out that without the violence, this movie has a stupid plot and no real redeeming features. If you're gonna check out Miike, watch... Imprint (Masters of Horror) or Those are two of his best. Oh yeah I forgot one... The Brotherhood of the Wolf (IN FRENCH, never see this movie in english on pain of death) is quite good, despite some silliness. |

Slither is silly good fun, Dark City is another one of my favorites that I haven't seen in a while and Audition is just...really...disturbing. |

I also heartily recommend The Thing, Jacob's Ladder, Oldboy (I can guess what part you've heard about it, but you really, really, really need to see the movie. It's surprisingly beautiful when it wants to be,) and the original The Grudge. Only one thing I've got to say about Audition: Kiri kiri kiri kiri... *Shivers* |

We here in the States have a holiday weekend coming up, and I plan on celebrating by baking cookies, taking my dog to the dog park, and watching a whole stack of horror movies. Yeah, I know it's more of a Halloween thing than a Labor Day thing, but I'm just in that kind of mood.
So, hit me up with your recommendations for good horror movies. I prefer ones that are actually scary, but I'll take a good slashfest, too. I have no problem with gore, and the movie itself doesn't have to be "good," per se, just entertaining.
