Muckraker  Posts: 233 Joined: 25 Mar 2008    | A japanese film by the name of Battle Royal, in which a class of highschool students are brought to an island, set loose into the wild and told that only the last one standing can return home. Add to which the hosts of this little event thoughtfully remembered to scatter various weapons around the island. If you'd prefer something that's not from overseas then I would recommend Feast. It is quite a bit on the gory side, but it's got a pretty good sense of humor about itself and pokes fun at a few established man vs. monster horror movie cliches. The movie itself revolves around a motley group of screw ups who end up besieged in a bar in the middle of the desert by some fairly deadly desert critters. All in all it was pretty entertaining for a fairly modern horror film, and I definitely recommend it. |

NO. Hostel is shite. Which is why I didn't mention it. I didn't mention Cabin Fever either, because the only part of tat film I like is a)all the annoying teens dying and b) when someone gets their harmonica lodged in their throat. |

one of my fav horror films i've seen/bought recently, find the unrated version it just adds some more gore ok now for my recommendations, in no real order nightmare detctive - bizarre japanese horror got more when i can think of them |

Awesome movies, but they aren't horror in any way. Or at least I didn't find them scary and didn't notice any attempts at it. Anyways, I love horror movies, and I can tell you that 1408 was shit. Do not see it and ignore whatever praises it might have gotten from anyone in this thread. It wasn't scary nor was it a good movie. You've probably seen Phycho (or you should have) but that's definitely one of the scarier movies I've seen. Tooth & Nail - A nice little movie from Horrorfest that wasn't overly scary, but made up for it by being original and in general a good movie. The Strangers was scary, so that's a good rent when it comes out. But that's really all I can say about it, if you just want some scares that's a great choice. |

Daywatch is crap. The films were originally supposed to be a trilogy but either the studios changed thier mind or Bakmembetov got bored with the idea and fucked it off. As a result Daywatch feels rushed and is all pretty much exposition for a crappy end. The car chase scene is pretty impressive but there is not enough action compared to Nightwatch which is a bastard classic. |

Very intense scares in both of them, and the way the movie is shot, you feel like you're right there with them (especially during the London Underground scene in 28 Weeks). Other than those, I'd say any work by George Romero before the nineties, particularly Night of the Living Dead. But that's about as far as my horro cinema that I liked goes. Usually, I find modern horror flicks rely to much on cheap scares, gore-porn, and what not, and I'm able to pull out of it. I'm more frightened by war movies than the average horror movie (like We Were Soldiers or Saving Private Ryan). If you are looking for dark thrillers, however, I can help you. Check out the modern film-noir flick Brick. Its a classical gum-shoe type mystery film set in a modern high school where a guy tries to infiltrate the upper-class drug culture in order to find out how his ex-girlfriend died. Really a great movie, one of the best I've seen in a long, long time, and that's saying something for me. Also the ending really kicks ass. Also American Psycho with Christian Bale (some of his early work, I suppose). It's about a pretty much bat-shit crazy 1980's yuppie who becomes a serial killer just to get rid of his every-day mundaneness. Really good, a classic in my book. Also has some very black humor in it. Especially the "HEY TED!!!" part and "Huey Lewis is too black sounding to me". Great movie, really brings you into the mind of a psychopath. |

anything with The Chin is awesome, it's also one of Ossie Davis' last movies too as for the Night/Day watch movies, they are both based on one book of the quadrilogy, there are 4, tho they are named after the first two books in the series and it does fall sqaurely in the horror genre, more sci-fi horror than anything else Teeth is just awesome, one of my fav movies as of late |

My personal list of scary movies are: Hannibal (mostly for the brain scene towards the end I think) Most of my stuff focus' on some sort of massive gore aspect, so watch out for that. Edit: How could I forget the Cube?! |

Ohh, those are just two little scenes. The movie is actually very very good. Amzing to say the least. I enjoyed it, though I wouldn't count it as any horror. For a little Comedy/Horror I'd go with Evil Dead 2 or Black Sheep. Though Black Sheep may be more funny if, of course, you were Australian or New Zeland. Action/Horror probably go with 30 Days Of Night. It's not the best but vampires are just fun to watch. Plus there are some good beheading scenes. I truely truely recommend the Mist with a passion. The acting is crap for most part but the directing is great. It pulls off from many different fears people have; the unknown, each other, hopelessness, ect. Watch it, if you haven't already. Thriller/Horror, definatly Saw. It isn't goreporn like its sequels but very pychologically disturbing. Se7en is amazing if you haven't picked it up yet. Scifi/Horror, you can't tell me you haven't seen the Thing or Alien so I'll move on. Goreporn/Horror, don't bother with this. That's just a few off the top of my noggin for now. |

Do you mean The Host? Most of the scary films I could recommend have already been mentioned, but here's a few. White Noise & White Noise: The Light. - Both are pretty scary since they deal with life after death & powers beyond our control, but I think The Light is the scariest out of the two. Pulse - I think this is one of my favourite scary films, it's original and disturbing, especially for computer users like us, plus it had an ending which I didn't see coming. Not a nice film, but excellent nonetheless. Lucio Fulci's The Beyond is my all time favourite scary film. It may be difficult to find, but I highly recommend watching it if you can find it. It has a truly haunting ending. |

I found Shaun to be very forced humor, not much of it. It wasn't scary, wasn't funny nor was it adventurous... It was simply boring. I normally love Simon Pegg's works, but this one just left me going "I don't know what I want back more, my rental money or my two hours". 28Days/Weeks were at least startling, nothing is truly frightening to me in movies but at least the suspense and sudden appearance of a monster/villain does something for me. And 28 always leaves me wondering how much better I'd do in their situation.
So Passion of the Christ?
Not very horror, barely even suspense... more of a cerebral film, but a definite second on that pick. Reminds me of a couple other good picks... |

I have to agree with you.... On a seperate note looking at a list of "scary movies" compiled by Empire, I have to disagree with them.... I never found Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre (both originals, but same goes for the remakes) scary at all |

Can't speak for Texas Chainsaw, never seen any of the original or reimagined series, but Halloween... Halloween's antagonist, Michael Myers, stood apart from the villains in other comparable 80's horror films, as he was nothing "super". Pumpkinhead was a demonspawn summoned by dark magic, Freddy Kruger was a form of undead spirit relegated to the dream world, Jason Voorhees is some style of Zombie or other corporeal undead, and the Cenobytes from Hellraiser were extra-terrestrials. Even Leatherface from TCM isn't truly a "normal" human, he's the retarded offspring of generations of inbreeding, possessing a form of super-strength that some 'tards exhibit... But Michael... Michael is 100% home-grown human, nothing physically remarkable about him. He's tough and strong, but nothing beyond the human norm. Michael Meyers is to me, the best 80's horror villain, because he could be anyone. Any face in the crowd, without his trademark mask, you would never know he was a serial killer. Interesting sidenote for those who care... Michael Meyers' mask is a Cpt James T. Kirk mask, just painted white. The scariest face in 80's horror is William Shatner. Lolz. |

Or The Blob, because Steve McQueen playing a teenager is TERRIFYING! An odd one that I actually liked was "The Dark" which is sort of a dark mystery about Welsh mythology, also it has some very Silent Hill moments. |

Never seen Halloween, but Texas Chainsaw Massacre is less supposed to be more unsettling and disturbing than scary. And I think that if nothing in that film disturbed you or made you feel uneasy then you have something very seriously wrong with you. Seriously man, the part where they put the fathers fingers in the girl's mouth nearly made me puke... |
