To catch a killer - story of john wayne gacy played by brian dennehy

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - loosely based on Henry Lee Lucas - REALLY fucked up movie. All over torrents so it's easy to find.

Haute Tension - Is a French Slasher film with a bit of a twist at the end, I highly enjoyed it, I don't know if there was an American remake for it, but it was a great movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

*Edit* Also known as High Tension here in the states

For "fright" aspect:
1408
Dog Soldiers (it's good, seriously, don't be fooled by the synopsis)
Deep Blue Sea
Jaws (classic)
Alien
Copycat (more suspense, still epic)
The Bone Collector
The Necronomicon (hard to find, but Lovecraft is always great)
Halloween (Rob Zombie Re-Imagining)
28 Days / 28 Weeks Later

For good old-fashioned B-Movie horror:
Pumpkinhead
Poltergeist
The Host (Korean, better subbed than dubbed, but good either way)
Anything with Cher's face shown in it

Ooh, I just remembered another one. It's more of a thriller and is more likely to terrify men, but Hard Candy's a great little chiller. Just don't watch it while you're eating your dinner.

REC, if it's findable, is supposed to be very scary.

The audience seems to think so

People have said it's kind of "28 days later meets Cloverfield"

Brotherhood of the Wolf is fantastic, one of my favorites. Not sure I'd call it a horror movie, really, but if you haven't seen it, check it out.

Slither is silly good fun, Dark City is another one of my favorites that I haven't seen in a while and Audition is just...really...disturbing.

You have great taste, will you be my fwiend? O_O

Happiness of the Katakuris- not sure if its horror per se, but it does feature singing zombies.
Trying to remember the name of a film i saw, it was Korean, a family are hunting down a monster in the sewers...
Help, anyone?

Ravenous

It's somewhere between horror, and thriller. Not a very complex plot, but the music and style choices are very unique.

I was waiting until I had seen all 4 to do a review, but the Tremors 4 pack is an amazing series of movies in a two disc collectors set... Horror Comedy at it's finest.

And it's British, starring Simon Pegg. That's all you need for one hell of a comedy.

Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are both great, although Hot Fuzz is more a murder mystery... But it is good stuff...

That would be The Host, it's a really good one, suprisingly dark and sad at the end, but otherwise really good. It's also pretty damned funny at times.

My top choices:

-Haute (High) Tension: A French slasher movie; as one can presume from the title, it's very tense.

-The Omen: An oldie, but goodie; if you haven't seen it before, do so-it's better than Exorcist in my opinion.

-Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer: Not so much scary as it is shocking, but good.

Darkness Falls, the evil film made me jump (at a part with no baddie!!)
28 days later, just dont call it a zombie film on this site (even though it blatently is)
Evil Dead Trilogy, Evil Dead 2 is the best one

Yea 28 Days Later and Evil Dead 2 are two of my favourite horrors ever.

Also try some of the classics, like the early Friday the 13ths and the first few Nightmare on Elm Streets before they ruined both franchises.

1408. A psychological thriller that actually works.

The only horror movie I actually enjoyed, ever. Although some people call movies I don't consider horror at all horror, and I do like some of those.

Yes, just yes...

I can't wait for the next one, haven't heard if they're going "Months" or "Years" later, but it will be a trilogy.

I would like to see more movies made about escaped mental patients. It might not be very P.C., but how awesome would it be to see a small town overun and held hostage by a gang of the criminaly insane? There would be one super crazy guy and... come on, it writes itself!

But I've watched movies about deadly cows, so I guess I shouldn't pretend I have standards.

That movie has the potential to either be the best ever, or the worst ever. No inbetweens.

No, you fool. It isn't a romcomzom.

It's a romzomcom. With less of the rom, and more of the zom. Also some com, which combines to make a romzomcom. (Alright, I didn't need to add those last sentences, but 'romzomcom' is so fun to type!)

Eurgh... The first Tremors is one of my favourite films ever, but the sequels are uniformly garbage.

Shawn of the Dead is made of awesomeness and win. And I'd forgotten about Haute Tension, I always meant to see that.

I see that no-one has mentioned Hostel or its sequel yet. I haven't seen either, because although I'm just fine with gore, torture films tend to bother me rather a lot. Is either one at all worth watching?

Haven't seen the second, but I'd pass on the first. It's a softcore porn film for the first half, then a torture film for the second.

I didn't really enjoy either of the Hostel films, although the first one was better by far.

And possibly the remake of House of Wax, if only to see the death that Paris Hilton endures.

House of Wax is an incredibly enjoyable film. The death of Paris is just the icing on the cake.

I haven't been frightened by a movie since I was about six. However, for the sheer insanity factor, Jacob's Ladder is a great film.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but a semi-recent Stephen King film/adaptation - The Mist, managed to sort of combine Silent Hill-esque entities with some of 1408's depth in its delivery and some of its concepts.

Really? Wierd, since it got completely renamed to 'Switchblade Romance' over here in Britain. Much better name for the film, since it gives you a far better idea of what the film's about.

A zombie is a reanimated human corpse. Stories of zombies originated in the Afro-Caribbean spiritual belief system of Vodou, which told of the people being controlled as workers by a powerful sorcerer. Zombies became a popular device in modern horror fiction, largely because of the success of George A. Romero's 1968 film Night of the Living Dead.

There are several possible etymologies of the word zombie. One possible origin is jumbie, the West Indian term for "ghost". Another is nzambi, the Kongo word meaning "spirit of a dead person." According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the etymology is from the Louisiana Creole or Haitian Creole zonbi, of Bantu origin. A zonbi is a person who is believed to have died and been brought back to life without speech or free will. It is akin to the Kimbundu nzúmbe ghost. These words are approximately from 1871.

thus making 28 days later a zombie movie. and a scary on at that.
and indeed oldboy is a great movie too not really "horror" scary but it gives you the chills.
And so does requiem for a dream. I found that one scary as well in a cold and lonely way.
further more I love the 80's slasher movie Nightmare on Elm street.

One film that's not been mentioned yet, and it's truly awesome. Awesome enough to recommend it to everyone.

"The Frighteners"

Not only has it got Michael J Fox, and DAMN can he act when he has the chance, but it's funny, touching, really scary and you will not work out the end scene...

Seriously, grab it and love it. It's better than "Shaun of the Dead" and I love that film.
