Gone Gonzo Posts: 2130 Joined: 15 Jun 2008 | I was a tad disturbed when I seemed to be adding myself on Facebook, until I realised it was someone with the same name as me. Which honestly never occured to me as a possibility. It's not that common a name. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2484 Joined: 18 Sep 2007 | There was a comedian/writer living in my city by the exact same name... indeed, once or twice I got calls intended for him, and if I hadn't been madly busy at the time could've thieved one of his Second City gigs. That's one of the reasons I came up with the APN moniker; too many "Steve"s around. -- Steve |
Paperboy Posts: 48 Joined: 8 May 2008 | My name is Craig Andrew Donnelly... ...the second. Go figure. If you want to get REALLY fancy and stay true to my familys ancestry, its Baron Craig Andrew Donnelly the Second, but that just looks to busy on a buisness card. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1393 Joined: 29 Dec 2007 | I'm both glad and slightly saddened by my name. I have one of those great last names that work as first names (although it only seems to be a first name to younger people) and a first name that is apparently also a last name. Never once have I met someone with my name, but I have met someone with my inverse-name, if I may. Was rather confused, and I still believe this person to be my evil twin, long lost at birth and forgotten by my family. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 874 Joined: 10 Sep 2007 | I share my name with an American comedian. A friend of mine has the same name as the bassist from Cream. If you've got a common surname, then it's not particularly unusual. Also, have you ever made a post that didn't end with some preposterous little apology? |
Muckraker Posts: 340 Joined: 7 May 2008 | I share the same name with someone who does a Bridge column in a newspaper. At first I found it odd, but it's pretty normal and to be expected. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2362 Joined: 22 Jun 2008 | Theres this guy in a book named after me. Its kind of creepy, actually :p. I have not yet experienced this occurrence of identity yoinking. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2229 Joined: 13 Sep 2007 | Yeah I googled my name once, some metrosexual author had it. Similarly, Easykill is the name of some grunge band or something. I would have preferred that the other guy with my name was cooler, but I didn't really mind. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4269 Joined: 13 Aug 2008 | After Googling it, I have discovered my name is shared by one of you American's baseball players. Edit: And apparently there is a karate blackbelt somewhere who calls himself the Iron Ninja. I have no idea why, since Karate is not the same thing as Ninjitsu. |

Googling my name turned up this guy: http://www.peterwhittle.co.uk/index.html Wierdly enough, I'm currently doing a degree in media studies and could easily end up doing similar stuff. Just hope I don't end up looking like as much of a pretentious knob. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 3159 Joined: 16 May 2008 | my last name is very rare, it's kind of a clan thing (not klan, like the KKK, more like Irish Geneology), everyone who shares my last name is somehow related, generally. But there are a few distant relatives with the same name as me (Matthew being a pretty common name) my girlfriend named one of her kids "Matthew Michael" which is really wierd cause that's my first and second name, so I guess that counts.. she named him that about 4 years before we even met. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2549 Joined: 28 Jun 2008 | No-one's got the same whole name, but there is a Welsh Opera Singer called 'Bryn'. EDIT: actually, I'm apparently a Chinese acupuncturist.
It seems like it to most people. You know, the ones who stand on one leg in a poorly imitated crane stance and scream, "Hoouyaa!" At the top of their voices. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1583 Joined: 9 Aug 2008 | With the exception of a middle name, my father has my name, so... there goes that. But really, beyond that, there isn't another Michael Lakis for thousands of miles near me. Probably the closest one lives in Greece and goes by Mikhali (my Greek name) so it doesn't really bother me. Also I plan on naming my first son Michael Lakis Part 2. So, he gets to have fun. |

Paperboy Posts: 31 Joined: 23 Aug 2008 | i will never have that problem since there are no asian guys named Frank and my last name is pretty damned rare as well... yeah i know, hard to find an asian name that every one of us shares, huh? |

I know an asian guy named Tom Gurny and another one named Ken Tchaikowsky they're only half asian, but they took all the asian genes their moms gave them and said "F U" to the other genes from their dads, because they be some asians. the point is, a name doesn't mean that much with regards to ethnicity |

I'm unsure as to whether or not I want to go offer him a drink, considering he's quite underaged, or if I want to go kill him for attempting to usurp my nomenclature. |

Guaranteed to leave guests feeling amazed and entertained". Unfortunately, a wider search revealed that I was also executed in Alabama sometime in the 90's, but I did murder lots of people so I had it coming. I must have performed some of my famous close up magic, to give the illusion I was dead, then changed my skin colour and became the reformed character who now graces The Escapist forums. |

So I was flipping through the paper the other day when I came across an interesting article. It was rather mundane, to be honest; it was about a case and the lawyer that had won it. As I flipped through, serching for more details, though, what struck my interest was not the article itself.
The lawyer had the same name as I did.
For some reason I felt betrayed. If I were to guess, I'd say it's because my name is part of what makes me an individual, what makes me who I am, and no one else is allowed to have that. I can't be sure why it felt so wrong, though.
So, the question I pose to you, fellow Escapists, is this; have you ever heared of or met someone with the same name as you. And I don't mean just your first name; I mean the same name as you, first and last (middle is optional). And more importiantly, how did it make you feel?
Apologies for the ambiguous name of the thread.
