Wahey first thread for the Gitsnik!

Actually that line is exactly why I am writing up this little question. I've spent a number of years now on the internet under many guises, but two or three of them (specifically this one, "Gitsnik") are personalities that I spend a lot of time under. Initially I had thought to post this somewhere else but a gaming-based forum seems more appropriate (considering the "My life as a tank" article the escapist did a short while ago) as you all spend so much time as your avatar.

So my question is, do you find that you become your avatar? It's not uncommon to hear people actually saying "lol" out loud these days, but I don't mean that, I mean moments where people ask your name and you say "Git... err...", or where you act like you do online (i.e. look at buildings and think "perfect sniping position").

The perfect example for my own actions came last night when I was talking to one of my friends and she asked me how I was going and I said "Gits is going great actually".

I could just be predisposed to insanity in some form or other, but I am curious how many of the escapist also do this? Or whether I should go sit through another appointment with a professional for this sort of thing.

Edit: To clarify, I don't mean "avatar" the same as "display picture" I mean the whole package, your mannerisms, your jokes, the way you act or talk. If there is a private joke with your IRC channel or your WoW guild do you use it in real life. I get that everyone reflects themselves normally in what they do, I'm talking about going that extra "mile" (you know... "gits is having a good day")

My avatar is usually named Curly. People in my clan who I know personally ALL call me Curly when I see them.

Unfortunately, I have never gained the ability of Geass, have never had a beautiful witch strike a deal with me, and I've never masterminded a battlefield. So, I guess I'm not like my avatar picture. Nor have I ever turned into a poorly spelled British muffin with a pitchfork (though I did create an avatar of that for a while...well..my girlfriend did at the time for a birthday gift cause she's a cheap...oh I'm rambling off...must be because it's four in the morning). And I haven't become evil. So I guess I haven't personally become my avatar.

I am not my avatar, my avatar is me. I do not say silly things like, "lol" out loud, I do not say "rofl" unless I am using it as a point of humor.

Unholykrumpet:
So, I guess I'm not like my avatar picture.

Sorry I should re-clarify, I don't mean your "image" when I say Avatar, I mean the whole thing. Online I'm much like I am offline (an elitist bastard) but when I start saying things like "Gits is having a good day" or referring to myself in the third person (I blame /me on IRC for this actually) I start to wonder if it's just me or if there are many others.

I'll edit original post to re-clarify.

Cheers

In which case, I'm the same offline and online, unless I'm roleplaying online at the time.

I Think I Just May Agree With You.

Not That I Am The Ultra Joe In Real Life, But That Online, Me And This Avatar Have Become Inseparable.

Taxi Driver, Lord of the yellow horde, omniscient omnipotent creator of the universe, owner of the cab that runs of the hatred I have for your soul, and inventor of the engine that runs of the hatred I have for your soul.

Every aspect of Taxi Driver's being is thoroughly unfathomable, and quite possibly completely invulnerable, as every banhammer that has ever struck him has been reduced to dust on contact. He also commands incalculable legions of powerful taxi drivers.

I'm pretty much the same, except that I express myself in english (not my native tongue) slightly different than I do in spanish. In the net I tend to use memes here and then, or slang contractions that are unfathomable in spanish-try calling someone "broder"(brother), analogue of dude, in mexican spanish slang, it sounds silly.

But I'm pretty much the same.

Also, I'm clearer on the net because writing allows me to organize my thoughts better than talking.

Ooo..ya, if I slept like a normal person, I probably would have noticed it.

No, pretty much, my online persona is the real me. Only difference is when speaking, I generally have a hard time conveying my message because I don't have time to figure out how to say what I want to.

I sometimes find myself talking like I do on forums out loud. This may not sound strange, but its weird how definitions of 'rude' vary from real life to the internet.
I usually post on my guild forums as 'Virtus' and now can't seem to get away from being labeled that within my guild on TS or when I meet one in real life.

Yeah, me too! I'm just not looking forward to the baldness.

I wish I was a Toronto Maple Leaf. I do less swearing, and am less of a fanboy but more talkative while here at the escapist.

Now if that translated through to how you acted IRL you would be doing exactly what I'm doing.

I am a TacoNinja yes.
A TacoNinja is a ninja that eats tacos and isn't very fit because of the taco-eating. :D
Only my brother and his idiot friends talk like they do on the internets.
But I am not a purple hippo with wings, although that would be cool...

Online I am Reaperman Wompa. Offline I am waiting to be Reaperman Wompa.

My name/real life sux :(

Other than that I think i'm pretty much the same, the main difference being that I'm either quieter or much, much louder and meaner "On the outside".

Which is why, even though my spelling and grammar is quite good, words like 'anyways' and 'yeh' are used- they mimic words I'd say in real life. Yeh, I do actually speak like I type.

Generally, I've always viewed my Escapist profile as a passage into a oasis in a desert of 'LOL OMGZ' and 'HAZOR'... which is why I completely agree with mandatory serving in the Escapist patrols, keeping trolls and fanboys out of the site.

Argh I hate when I can't articulate things properly.

I'm not playing out my avatar, as near as I can tell I am, for all intents and purposes, becoming my avatar. Or maybe a better way of putting it would be I've developed a split personality where some days I'm gitsnik and other days I'm... "normal".

I'm guessing though, judging by the various comments I've seen, I'm alone in this.

Yes indeed it is.

On-topic: I have friends in real life that call me ''Ghost'' and ''Sin''.

Hmm, ok. I guess becomming my avatar is also becomming my gaming, joking, silly self. Pretending to be evil and think up evil things, when in realy life I wouldn't harm a puppy. Orphans on the other hand. *shakes fist* They think they're so great! I'll teach 'em!

Good to have you serving stompy, good to have you serving...

I have become part of my Avatar. Whenever I see the word Fire I stop and think if that somehow relates to me. In a way, my name has become Fire. Being the name that everyone calls me online (people can't pronounce Daemon) doesn't help. I also found myself making the F in Fire a capital. It's very strange.

My avatar is a reperentation of myself with a nifty name, so no I have never found myself becoming my Avatar because we are one in the same.

Heh. No. I'd apologise for your pain (if there is any) but honestly, everyone has their own troubles. Me, apparently I'm insane :D

Well... you know I didn't mean it directly at anyone. (Hides the wrench) Wow, awkward.

I never actually meant it in that way, just the cute old british ones with scarfs around their necks, "Please, sir can I've some money?" types. Damn them and their adorability! Is it me or is this hole keep on getting bigger?
