I had previously been under the impression that people who play the table-top game and people who play video games were completely different, but several here have made reference to playing the table-top game. So, how many of us do? And I suppose, while we are here, who do you play? Also: might as well note any other board games you play.

EDIT: Final line and slight grammar.

i am an all purpose gamer.
i play both computer games and table top games.
my D+D pen + paper game experiences lead me to want to collect models to represent characters and bad guys. So i found somemodels, warhammer models. i then found out there was a game associated to them as well. So i tried that out and liked it.
a few $1000 and 11 years later a game came out on the PC. it was only natural for me to want to try it out.
as for computer games my parents bought me a commodore 64 for my 13th bday.
17 years later i now own an outdated PS2 and a 6 year old PC i REALLY need to update.

I used to play Warhammer 40,000, when I was 13. Recently, I've been feeling the urge to start again, with a different army (I partially blame Ultrajoe for rekindling my interest, as well as Relic.) I do game as well (spent today at a friend's house with my fiancé, playing her Wii. Terrific fun.) I'm not adverse to trying a bit of pen and paper RPGing, tried RPing on the forums and have been having a blast.
Only problem is finding people to play with.

I have played 40K for about three years now. (Imperial Guard!) I live in a small town in the U.S. in the middle of an extremely rural state whose name doesn't rhyme with Biowa, so I can say with almost absolute certainty that my friends and I are the only people who play 40K in the surrounding 100 miles! Another game I love (please don't think of me as childish) is Wizkid's constructable table-top strategy game, "Pirates". Please, if anyone else has ever played this, back me up! It's awesome!

Yay! Imperial Guard beat every other race in every concievable way! Except winning against them! But anyway, Imperial Guard are the most fun to play as- especially aginst other Imperial Guard armies, so I recommend Stargrunt 2 by Ground Zero Games to all- I play with 15mm figures (by GZG as well). and it is increbily fun. You can download it for free from here for free:

Yeah I play pirates as well, and tis also extremely fun. I got a whole bunch at a wargames con in London, Wizards were having 3for2 by the end. Truly epic. That game is masterful, and you can play it like, anywhere. I play it at School! And on holiday! Yippeee!

I also play D&D, Star Wars RPG (I buy singles from the internet. Brilliant.) and Dark Heresy (40K rolepaly). Which is rather fun. Oh, and Necromunda and Full Thrust (GZG again).

I used to play Warhammer 40k. I had Eldar, my older brother had blood angels and my younger brother had Tyranids. We stopped once the prices started skyrocketing. Still, they look pretty cool when painted.

Sorry to be so late in replying, I did make this thread after all... Anyway thanks for the answers, I had never heard of pirates, but I do enjoy 40k(imperial) and fantasy(empire). And yes chess is also exelent, an odd point, have you ever tried playing noughts and crosses in you head? its infinately more fun than on paper.

I got started on chess and D&D, graduated to the Commodore 64, branched out into Battletech and Warhammer 40k and a milliard other tabletop and roleplay games in university, got into the miniatures industry for a few years, bought the Hal0z... I'm fairly discriminating in what games I play, but not on what platform I play them.

40K: The Imperial Guard. And some eldar, but they suck. Demo charges and hundreds of men are the way to go. Oh, and tanks. And drop troops. And some other stuff.

Don't let UltraJoe in here. He will try to woo you with his Tyranids. Don't succumb to their tantalizing zerginess.

I play warhammer fantasy, but dont bother with the hobbyist/collector stuff. My friends and I download armybook pdfs and play with cardboard and imagination. The game is awesome, but the models are expensive and since i have no interest in painting/modelling, i work around it

I've been wanting to get back into 40k. For some reason lately, I've been feeling the urge to make a big ol' army of Guardsmen and just see how well they work with human wave tactics. I figure if I just dump enough miniatures into the army, there's a certain lack of skill I'll be able to get by with.

I've been trying to start playing it, I have some friends who play and a kid at school is selling his old set, but it's so damn expensive, anyone know where I can get a cheap value on an army?

EBAY. Dear lord, every model you want is there, usally for less than half of box price. Usually you can find something painted too.

I used to play whilst I was at school, but realised I was spending ten times longer painting than I was actually battling. Plus, I was spending a huge amount of money on an army when I could get computer games that were much cheaper and lasted longer...

I play 40k as Necrons, although i admit the price hike detered me for a few months. Big problem for me is that my friend is the only other person near me who plays and im too far from the nearest GW to go to regular half-term tournaments etc...

played 40k from the rogue trader days until 2nd ed, and warhammer from 2nd ed to 4th ed. Now that some mates and I have gotten into warhammer online, we're starting to build warhammer armies. I'm doing my first khorne based chaos warrior army.

Untrue Galt, take it from the horde army designed for waves... The unskilled are cut down with shocking ease, it takes an army engineered to both excel in speed and disruption to use a wave rush.

Guard can do it, but i suggest buying orks or Nids and saving yourself the pain.

Don't listen to Ultrajoe anybody- Tyranids are pathetically easy to beat for a Guard player who knows his business. Here's an apocalypse example.

I've got a three-thousand point guard army holding a section of line in an apocalypse battle against a mass of Tyranids. And I'm decimating his Gaunts- seriously, the closest any of his infantry get's is 12"(Rapid fire range- for approximately 150 lasguns). His Lictor's have been and gone- knocked out two of my lascannon teams before being swamped unto death, while the other tried to kill HSO, and got a power sword pushed through it's spine for it's troubles.

SO, to try and break the stalemate, my oppnenet Deepstrikes in his Trygon (massive tunneling super-beastie) into my lines. It scatters just inside my defensive line- not in base-to-base (mind, you can shoot at it even if it is in close-combat). So, what do I do? Do I redirect my Leman Russ and sacrifice a turn of shooting? Or should I charge it with a couple of squads and try to hold it up?

I do neither. Instead, I land(deepstrike) a squad of hardened veterans (3 meltaguns, 1 plasma pistol) and a special weapon's squad. The special weapons goes first- the demo charge scattering nicely and wiping out it's one mass point. They fire their meltaguns, which both miss (cursed Guard accuracy). Then the veteran's step up to fight. In a hailstorm of energy fire, the Trygon is reduced from 5 wounds, right back down to one. A solitary krak missile finishes the job. The Trygon screams, and crashes to the ground in a sickening medley of shattering bone and destroyed flesh.

The guardsmen smile, and resume firing.

HAHA! THE EMPEROR TRIUMPHS ONCE MORE!!!

Well, if your looking for an ork army circa 1992 and you live in the UK...

EDIT: *reads profile* That'll be a no on the UK thing then.

I became quite interested In It for about a month until I relized that I was wasting a lot of money. I also didnt like going into Games Workshop. The staff there make It impossible to browse for stuff. My Auntie wont go In there for that reason alone, even though she Is interested In the hobby. Other than that I think that the fictional universe they developed for It Is really good and full of history and Is why I will buy games like dawn of war.
