We all know what WE can do to stop global warming. Buy a solar panel, Drill for geothermal power, put up a small windmill, even put up buy a hybrid. BUT: We can also buy totally air-powered cars, which are $3,000 less than conventional cars, and only costs 3 cents to fill up.
Also, scientists have been thinking up ingenious ways to solve this problems, From sending lenses into space to dilute the sun's rays, to making clouds shinier.
Global warming is nothing more than a heat blip in our earth's history, and like nmmoore13 said, is not man made, no scientific evidence supports global warming....its like saying that man caused all the ice ages as well.
I saw something on the Discovery Channel about some people building some sort of "air-sponges" that remove the CO2 from the atmosphere. If they work, buy into that. In the meantime, Wind and Solar energy are the way to go.
nmmoore13: Solution: realize global warming is not man made.
Yeah, because there's tons of legitimate scientific evidence for that, and it's totally not another conspiracy theory. [/sarcasm]
It really bugs me that people keep saying there's no scientific evidence for global warming when, actually, there's an absurd amount of it, and the evidence only continues to grow as everyone continually ignores it.
The only long-term solution is to just burn way less fossil fuels, and when we do burn them, try to filter out most of the CO2 before it escapes into the atmosphere. Though nothing is really going to happen unless people stop denying it without any real evidence.

One, nobody said that there is no scientific explaination for global warming, it's getting hotter and nobody disputes that. What he said was "It's not man made" which it's not. cows are much more responsible than we are. one solution, eat more beef.
second, the long term solution you suggest is not the only one. Like i said in the previous thread (zeke zeke zeke, we were so close) we should look at the positives of climate change. we can't stop it, so we might as well begin working on ways to make it work for us, see Crops On Mountain Tops

Soloution : Define "Global Warming". Then decide if it's a threat. Then work on an answer.
Seriously, there's a ton of evidence of Something Happening, just like there always has been.
What is actually happening, I don't think anyone has any real idea of.
Deforestation? Uh...only in the poorer countries; most First World work from trees specially grown from paper. CFC's? Almost completely banned now and no slow down. Ozone Layer? That'll be due to the underground fires in the coal seams since they were formed. Endangered Species? Many species have thrived, and we've all heard of Evolution. Global Kilers? Like BSE, CJD, H5N1, Nuclear Meltdown? Uh... Cow farts? Well...
Now, if we're talking about real problems like bulldozing mountains, A/C's in Florida or anything that's draining the limited resources; then we can work on something. Coz Space isn't really that habitable.
if global warming is in fact legititimate then it is probably pointless to try and fight it, we are most likely too late, and besides, you can't prove that it is completely man made, for all we know this is a simple natural fluctuation of the otherwise normal processes of the earth, after all it isn't like the earth is a static picture(despite what religion would have you believe), it is a constantly changing mosaic, half the processes we probably know nothing about. that is why people that look to preserve nature exactly as it is have a fundamentally flawed piont of view. but humanity needs to stop living off oil simply because it will eventually run out, and if you don't prepare then your in for a rude awakening. and i say; if polar bears are living in an environment that is changing and they can't adapt, then let them go extinct, that is evolution.

Well, ok, but the person right after him actually did say that global warming isn't really a problem, and plenty of people still say it's not real. Also, yes, there is evidence that it's man-made; the current ridiculous, unprecedented spike in CO2 started right around the Industrial Revolution, when we started making lots of--you guessed it--gaseous CO2. Cows? Cows do produce methane, but I've never heard that they produce enough to rival all other greenhouse gasses. And why do you think there are so many cows?
We do need to adapt to global warming, but adapting will be much easier if we can slow it down.
Hunde Des Krieg: people that look to preserve nature exactly as it is have a fundamentally flawed piont of view.
What's so flawed about wanting to keep the world approximately the way it is, so we can interact with it in ways we understand? Not caring whether the world changes in a way we can't accurately predict seems pretty reckless.
What could actually be a great contribution to the slowing of climate change/global warming, is to stop cows from farting. I'm serious, according to QI (A quiz show run by Steven Fry), cow methane creates more greenhouse gases than cars. Yet, kangaroos don't fart at all, due to a certain bacteria in their gut (I don't know what it's called, they didn't say). But if we could somehow introduce that bacteria successfully into the millions of domesticated cows worldwide, we could do a hell of a lot for the planet.

What they both said. The ultimate solution? Tell overly-smug hypocrite environmentalists to take a nice vacation to someplace I'm nowhere near. Besides, smog is nothing compared to smug.

Okay Okay, I admit the earth is getting warmer...wasn't it a total of like .01 degrees or something? I still don't see why warmer weather is bad. Longer growing seasons, I tan faster, solar power works more efficiently; it seems like the benefits are boundless and the cons are that a whole bunch of ice is melting. If this had all taken place 100 years ago, the Titanic would not be at the bottom of the sea.
Please realize I am not serious because I don't take global warming as a serious issue.
Also I am trying to reduce my carbon footprint by eating 3 times as much beef as normal to make up for all the vegans/vegetarians who are eating the plants that CONVERT the CO2 into oxygen!

New Jerseys full of smug (See a certain south park episode to know what were talking about)
For the love of Christ, isn't one global warming thread enough? Zeke, you have become the physical embodiment of everything wrong with this site, not even MGG can hold a candle to this. You don't need to make a thread to flesh out every detail of an idea. Instead, just put enough thought into your original topic so you don't need to create numerous little cancers on our beloved Escapist.

1 degree, Celsius. No, doesn't sound like much, but by current theories, the largest mass extinction ever, which killed off 95% of all life, was caused by a global temperature increase of about 10 degrees. We're expecting it to go up by a few more degrees before it levels off. The heat itself isn't the problem; it's the drastic, sudden changes to weather patterns: massive droughts, floods, etc.
And please don't bring in the "vegans/vegetarians = global warming" thing; eating animals is always less efficient, because the animals had to eat massive amounts of plants to grow up before you ate them, and most of that energy never reaches you. I dunno if that part is just a joke, but it sure contradicts the idea that you're not worried about global warming anyway.
Firstly, it is happening, and we are not TOTALY responsible for it, it was inevitable. BUT, we have sped it up by a stupid amount, thus leapfrogging the process. We do have the technology to prevent a massive problem, but people are still saying stupid stuff like the 3rd post. It can be stopped if more people backed the legistration put forward by goverment. But alas, no one wants to say 'Lets do something about it'.
Interestingly, Britain will be getting colder during Global Warming. It's all Meteorological, which I don't have a clue on, but my learned friend tells me so.
i dont believe in man-made global warimng, but nuclear energy (especially that gotten from heavy water theyre working on) and electric cars are a good way to make russia bankrupt. (lets hope so)
jim_doki: cows are much more responsible than we are. one solution, eat more beef.
The more beef people eat the more cows they will breed. If you wanted to reduce the amount of methane from cows the solution would be to eat less beef, not more. It's simple supply and demand.

HalfShadow: I don't care. I'll be dead before it becomes a real problem, and the future can go fuck itself because I won't be in it.
Congratulations; you're EVERYONE in the Industrial Revolution.
I wonder if aliens have forums on which they discuss these things with people they haven't will never met/meet. 'Cause that would be a funny coincidence.
Yeah, and if it weren't for the industrial revolution, you'd still be sitting around a fireplace wishing the daylight lasted longer and the stores weren't so far away. We also wouldn't be having this converstaion via anything other than by mail, so...
