Just wondering if people torrent? Wanted to know if you think it is worse than single file downloading because when you torrent you can just get whole albums and discograohies compared to basically "sampling" what the band is like? This question extends to all forms of torrents, not just music based ones.

Torrents in general? I use them all the time. They're great. Using torrents to engage in illegal file-sharing? I don't pirate games, music, movies, or anything else, although I admit I used to. I've gained a new-found respect for artists, especially game developers, who deserve to be compensated for their efforts, and I'd rather not contribute to the problem of piracy myself. There's enough cheap scumbags out there already and I'd rather not be come of them.

I torrented Bioshock a while back. But I only kept it for two days and decided it was not fun enough to buy and deleted it.

Anti-download fundamentalists are free to have a go, but bear in mind that I buy several hundred CDs each year and could not physically buy any more.

I also use torrents for acquiring PSX ISOs, old PC games and any noteworthy adventure games which aren't available where I live (read: most of them). I don't regard this as stealing either because everything I torrent is either unattainable or out of print.

Running it off my external harddrive meant I had to use lower graphic quality, it slowed it down a lot. So if I had enjoyed it enough I might have picked up a physical copy. That's what happened with Spore.

Though Spore was more because I wanted access to Sporepedia.

i cant bring myself to torrent music, mainly because i know what its like to try and sell albums. i do, however, use a certain private tracker to download movies. no current stuff, just foreign, B movies, old movies, and impossible to find stuff

I used to torrent games until I got a cease and desist letter. Now the only things I torrent are things I cannot get otherwise. Also, I torrented .pdf copies of some books I already own so I could put them on an e-Reader device.

I torrent stuff. It's a great way of getting stuff that is no longer available to buy. Also it's good for checking stuff out before giving people my money, No longer do I have to buy an album to discover that it has one good song out of 12.

And equating stealing a car with downloading music is crap. Before you buy a car you can take it for a good testdrive and get a feel for it and test it all you want, Try standing in a CD shop and asking them if you can stand there for an hour and listen to all the songs a couple of times to make sure you like them before giving them your money.

I will admit that the comparison of stealing cars and downloading music is not a valid comparison. Plus, if you download an album or game and then proceed to buy a regular copy of it, then it balances out. HOWEVER, you have to make sure that you buy a copy if you like it, delete it if you don't. Otherwise, it could be argued to be stealing.

i see no difference. you dont legally have a right to possess those items, regardless of whether or not they are tangible. minus a jewel case and foldout hard copies are the same as copies you have on your HD. sheesh, i feel like ive been hearing this argument alot lately. i quit.

That is exactly what I do. Game companies aren't the scum that the RIAA and MPAA are ('cept EA, but there is still time for them to not reach the dark side). If a game is good, I buy it, even if I already beat it, and never open the box.

Information is infinitely replicable, and can be free or cost money for the original owner to share with others. The owner never forgets his version, but now some one else knows it as well. Does this sound like shoplifting at all? No. There is a reason that no one has been sued for stealing. It's "copyright infringement."

I personally will copy and download anything I possibly can. If its on a disk, I'll have it for myself, or for any friend who wants his share. Does this mean I'm stealing? Hell no. I have a bookcase stuffed full with movies and games. I am very responsible with what I download. Just because I can have it for free does not mean that the creators do not deserve their fair share. It's when the creators ask too much, make it unavailable, or in a format I will not support (DRM) that they don't get my compensation. I'm getting what I want, and voting with my dollar what I want to see more of, and less of.

hey, i said i torrent. i torrent because i DONT FEEL LIKE PAYING. i have the money to buy a copy of this hard to find DVD off of Ebay for $60. instead, i do some "copyright infringing" and DL it for free. without paying.

Yes indeed, I wasn't going to pay 60 bucks just to be able to edit my office word 2007 documents for school(trial ran out and you can't even copy/paste from it) so why not download a key to unlock it? Or if i've seen a movie in theaters or have a copy and just want one on my lappytop for my breaks at school why not download it.

For the Microsoft Word issue, you could always just use OpenOffice.org, which is free. I prefer it over Word.

I don't use torrents. Though I could see a use for them if whatever you want is too obscure to normally find, I would still feel like I was cheating the artist/programmer/maker_dude out of the money for their services.
