It's not that kind of political statement, and as much as I'm not a Bush fan, it's not an anti-bush theme art work The dollar namely the One Dollar bill is a symbol for american currency, which now means shit worldwide, it's fitting that she chose the one to get her message across... Ugh listen to me I sound like an art critic... Then again most artists are |

Good Marketing campaign! Warn the people who just lost their jobs because their portfolio busted that there is an economic crisis looming. Also, I don't see how you protest against the breakdown of the economy. It's not like they're going to say "You're right!", pack up and have the stock exchange back to normal overnight. |

My thoughts exactly. It implies that there's a large percentage of people who are anti-good economy. "Meyh. What it's ever done for me?" |
On the Record Posts: 5168 Joined: 3 Mar 2008 | What I find funny is that the economy must be doing EXTREMELY well to have a zero dollar bill. Because with inflation going up, you'll eventually need one thousand dollar bills. So, this person's protest is pretty void. |

Infamous Scribbler Posts: 672 Joined: 8 Nov 2007 | How can you fail to see the point? It's as obvious as can be. It's a protest because she wants people to wake up and notice. Maybe she'll mail the 10.000 prints to different companies/politicians. I assume she'll cut them to size, but even if she doesn't, this picture is frameable and shows both sides, it gets the point across. Does it matter you can't crumple them up into your pocket? |

Previous poster said portrait of G W Bush. Strictly speaking it's not entirely his fault but it still seems like the appropriate thing to do. Plus, cut them out at least! Lazy. |

And do WHAT, exactly? Pull all of their money out of the banks, causing an even harsher run on them? Good idea! Oh, wait, maybe put MORE money into them? No, I don't see that happening either... Hmm, Maybe she wants Uncle Sam to bail the banks out... No, they are already trying that... Hmm, maybe she wants people to spend lots of money on their Credit Cards, since the dollar itself is worthless... No, because most people realize that a credit card is simply electronic transfer of a physically earned dollar amount...
No one in the stock market WANTS to crash the economy, because if they DO, then they are out of work, as WELL as poor. So what is the PROTEST all about? It makes NO DAMN SENSE! User was banned for: Ipod Saves Girl's Life. (Permanent) |

Beat Writer Posts: 170 Joined: 16 Sep 2008 | thing is in theory a $0 bill should be worth nothing but is really worth the amount of paper its printed on ($0.5 maybe?) a bit like when the price of copper when up and a 1p coin was worth 1.5p. Still anything passes as art these days. I bet if i got some road kill threw it at the wall then shot it with a nail gun it would be hailed as revolutionary. |

However the subject is important and i ask that u not only watch it, but if u doubt it spend some time trying to prove it wrong, by all means mail me any comments or post them here, if u want more information on the way the world works ( and if u spend the time watching that u probably will) then i can tell u all where to look. again http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/ p.s. as regard to Laura's artwork i very much appreciate it. i can see where she's coming from, predict where she's hopefully going with it and generally 'get it'. most modern art is about 'getting it' and so rarely nowadays about simply making pretty things. |

The thing is you haven't so it doesn't count. Conceptual art hasn't got to the point where it can exist without the context of a gallery, happening, or artifact of communication. This prevents me from going: |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1884 Joined: 11 Jul 2008 | I'm gonna go crazy and defend the artist, for a bit... its very easy to say 'anyone could have done it with photoshop' but no-one did, therefore she's had an idea and made it art. Of course, that would open the age old question 'Is it art just because it is created by an artist?' but that's for another thread I think. I do think Bush maybe should have been on it tho, not as an anti bush protest, but purely because it is about events now, therefore should reflect the presidency of now. (and may have deflected a few more 'photoshop lols' criticisms. However, maybe she tried that and felt it didn't 'work' as well as keeping it to a more realistic look. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1308 Joined: 21 Nov 2007 | I wonder if it would be possible to bleach a bill and print that on it? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1766 Joined: 2 Jul 2008 | You have to be careful what you do with money. The US Treasury Department doesn't like people making their own 'fake' money. This alone may explain why the artist didn't cut the notes out and make them double-sided. She also wanted to encapsulate them in a context of an artwork to fall within the defense of 'fair use' (i.e. as they are they are impractical to use as currency, even to grift someone in a bar). By having her name on it she is creating a cultural artifact and associating herself with it as the author. By making it an edition she is making an ironic comment on how it is entirely possible to give away a limited edition of prints in the street to strangers and in time find that they become collectable and increase in value when they come up for auction. Ok. So, she wont directly benefit from this, others will make money at her expense from worthless dollar bills. Yet, that may well be her eventual gameplan as a further ironic comment on the market. This explains why she distributed the notes in Wall Street to many of the people responsible for day-trading away America's financial future. I think she has come up with one of the best conceptual artworks of recent times and will gain fame and notoriety from it. Expect to hear more from her in the future. Although, I can see that she could make some money out of $0 T-Shirts in the interim without polluting the idea too much. After all, if she doesn't capitalize on this image someone else will. It has the potential to be the Smiley face of our time. |

It's about time you people had an economic breakdown. Hahahahahaa! I hope no one gets their shorts in a twist because of what I said. :D |
Red Guard Posts: 2670 Joined: 16 Dec 2007 | I think it's a cool paradox that by creating this zero dollar bill she has given value to something that is inherently worthless. Perhaps that wasn't her intention, but the implication seems to me that money is just paper and art isn't. |

IMO, they should've used a portrait of Bush.
