The Iron Ninja: It's not worth it. I'll admit it, I'm ashamed, but I did it. I went to Warcry. I went to Warcry just to have an awesome pirate badge. It is a scary place. People have pictures under everything they say, it's very confusing. Everyone has post counts in the thousands. I felt the shame of what I had done The shame of my quick break from our beloved escapist So I hid it. I hid my putrid pirate badge where only the truly inquisitive would find it But it taunts me It taunts me with it's presence. Every day I see that pirate, and it says You cheated
Don't do it. Spare yourself the shame.
And yet, it says "I'm awesome"
I've been trying to do that, but I can never find a topic that I can post on without me spewing my ignorance of MMOs. I don't play them you see.
I have mixed feelings about going to warcry to get the vagabond badge.
On one hand, I only really like the badges cause... It's like when you're having a sandwich, and then you get a free something... Anything. It's not like you care what it is, but it's free, and you were going to eat the sandwich anyways. They look nice and shiny, but ultimately they're like user titles: pointless eye candy.
Still, I do like them... Unfortunately I find few things in life that so clearly represent Sturgeon's Law as MMOs... Except they're like... 98% shit... So I feel anything I could post in Warcry would easily be misconstrued as trolling...

They may be pointless eye candy, but they make us feel special. :P
Anyway, how about that list of badges one can attain? Does such a list exist?
The Iron Ninja: On a side note I've actually turned off badges in forum options. They're pretty pointless really. I'd rather someone judge me by the quality (or lack therof) of my posts, and not base it upon whether I've had a certain number of people add me as a friend.
Well, some people like badges, and some people don't. I just wish the Gleemax forums had a system like the Escapist's. (in terms of giving members badges)
My mind is blown! The Escapist Staff auto-posting account is an escapist contributor!
But seriously, I didn't know there were that many "Forum Inferno"s handed out. Got any statistics on which is the less attained badge? Besides the staff-only ones.
I've only seen one person get the Neo badge. Also, the badge that has the pic of a beer mug is really hard to get.
The_Oracle: They may be pointless eye candy, but they make us feel special. :P

As far as I know, they're "secret", we're supposed to find out ourselves by attaining them or browsing other people's profiles. Ultimately it's a funny way to promote socialization.

the beer mug = Regular - you gotta make at least 1 post on 12 different months (1 year).
Then there's the "Upgrade", that even fewer people have: Landmark (the 3 beer mugs, look at Virgil) - Make at least 1 post on 36 different months (3 years).

Wow. Posting for three years? I guess not very many people have that badge, much less Regular.
I wish Forum Inferno was more easily attainable. Too bad only about 3 people have that badge.
I can't wait for the end of the Fable II contest; everyone participating will get a badge! It's good that I joined this forum when I did, otherwise I might have missed out. :)
The_Oracle: What are the rarest and hardest-to-attain badges, other than Cyber Celeb and Forum Inferno?
Badges for contest wins and other events (like the GamerLympics). They're almost always given to 10 or fewer people, are one time only, and are immediately retired. If you want them, I suggest keeping an eye on the news and entering every contest we run ;)

Well if they were easily attainable, then you wouldn't really want them. Chicken and Egg.
24 people have Landmark. 15 have Real Ultimate Poster. 11 have Maven. And only 4 have Cyber Celeb, making it the rarest auto-awarded badge.
Indeed.
And Maven is that rare? I figured it would be "medium rare", so to speak... And no, not like a steak.
hey, ever considered creating a "stats page" for badges, sort of like our very own version of achievements in steam. I mean, I think all badges have pretty much been found out by now. You could create a page with all the non-contest badges and their percentages... could be fun..?

I think that'd be a great idea. You'd probably have to contact the mods first and maybe get a petition together with enough signatures, but yeah, that could work.
On an unrelated note, I think Yahtzee Croshaw (The escapist username) should get a special badge just for being Yahtzee. Perhaps 'Professional Troll'? (kidding, I practically worship the guy)
Let's think up of some new badges. Here are some of my ideas:
Back From The Brink: Get banned once and come back to the boards by posting once.
Probed: Get a probation two times and come back to the boards by posting once.
Contest Winner: Come in first place at any forum contest.
Almost But Not Quite: Come in second place at any forum contest.
Please Don't Cry: Come in last place at any forum contest.
Forum Superstar: A moderator has added you as a friend!

Petitions never work though. If they wanna do it, they'll do it, if they don't think it's a good idea you can have 10 billion petitions and nothing will change.
As for your badges. Contest "place" badges already exist, look around for them. These too though:
Back From The Brink: Get banned once and come back to the boards by posting once.
Probed: Get a probation two times and come back to the boards by posting once.
The idea behind the notable/epic/real ultimate poster badges are to incite good behavior. Those 2 would be their antithesis by inciting people to get banned/prob'ed once to "get their badge after".

1. We could still let them know what we want, as opposed to leaving them in the dark and hoping they will implement our idea someday.
2. I suppose so. Do you have any badge ideas of your own? Maybe if we come up with enough good ones, the mods will use this thread as inspiration. :)
War Veteran - Survived 20 Bans/Probations and still kicking.
While we're on the topic of changes and such... Ever considered upping the Avatar size? It looks kinda silly that it fills out only 2/3rds or so of the sidebar, IMHO it should be as wide as the four badges.
TheGhostOfSin: There's no need to respond to each post Oracle, especially not with double and triple posts.
I'm just trying to make something of this thread.
Yeah, but you can make more than one point in a single post. You can respond to your hearts desire, but there's no need to post three or four times in a row.
War Veteran - Survived 20 Bans/Probations and still kicking.
You don't see the holes in that? Namely being just enough of a douche to get there, and not enough for Wilson to make you leave forever. I'm going to go ahead and assume you meant that in a joke kind of way.

I have never seem to understand, how do people add eachother as friends? I have only 1 friend, the ever-so-friendly Copter400, and no one else. Do people add someone to their friends' list when that certain someone is witty, gives a compliment, adds them to the friend list themselves, or what?
I haven't seem to get it.
And yeah, I went to WarCry. It wasn't..uhh. It didn't feel that good. And besides, I don't play so much MMORPGs. And yes, the signatures suck. Really, REALLY much.

It's simple.
1. Go to the profile of the person you want to add as a friend.
2. Click the text that says 'add to friends.'
3. You has a friend now!!!11one!!
As for WHY people add other members as friends, who knows? Maybe it's for badges. Maybe it's because they're being friendly. Who knows. :P

Yes it was a joke, a double sided one though, because if anyone ever manages 20 bans and not earn a permaban, that's pretty impressive. Both for their perseverance, and for their inability to learn. Such a person would also be fun to stick in front of an electric socket and tell them to lick it, then count how many tries before they figure it out.
Still also think the avatars should be something like 132x132, or at least 132x100. Fill out that white space between the end of the member info and the thread's table.
I like the ability to set badge order because it says a lot about what the poster finds valuable. For example, I'm extremely proud of my Escapist Contributor badge because of the amount of work I put into the review I wrote. The 50 replies and 1000 views badges I like because it's nice to know someone actually reads what I write and that I can spark discussion, and the Notable Poster badge reminds me "this ain't GameFAQs, make quality posts."

Rectangular avatars (rather than square ones) of any width would be nice because I've got a custom-made flag avatar I use on just about every other board or social network on which I post (originally designed as a flag for my now-defunct NationStates nation.) I'd like to be able to use it here but it looks totally wrong as a square.
