A much-reported "obesity epidemic" is sweeping the US and elsewhere, so I was wondering just how big are the people who frequent the escapist forums (perhaps a reflection of gamers in general?). I think a lot of non-gamers view gamers as people who eat a ton of crappy food, get very little exercise, and, as a result, are fat, but is it true? Here ( http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ ) is a body mass index (BMI) calculator that should tell you whether you're technically considered underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. For the record, I was obese about 8 months ago, but dropped some pounds and now I'm normal weight.

P.S. I would have thought that there was already a poll on this, but when I searched I found nothing.

I will admit I'm a bit overweight as I am partial to the odd pizza, nowhere near "obese" though.

Edit: Plus this may well be locked as there's not too much room for discussion.

I have a fast metabolism, so I basically digest food very quickly. I eat at an abnormal rate, and am probably responsible for the 3 trips to the shop my Mum makes every week, rather than the previous 1. However, I only weigh 7 stone (I am nearly 14 now) whereas most of my friends are 8 or even 9. The problem is, I'm always hungry, like the caterpillar in that famous childrens classic.

6 feet 4 inches and weighing in at 142pounds.
or 192cm(roughly) and 64.6kg for those who think in metric.
So a BMI of 17.3

So skinny I can sneak up on people by walking sideways...

To be honest I think BMI is a load of crap, especially internet things like that. they make assumptions about age (which affects how your bmi is calculated) gender etc. So they aren't accurate, plus the bmi system is well over a 150 years old now. It hasn't accounted for the general upward trend in people's height or a person's lifestyle.

I have a thirty inch waist and I stand right about six foot. If anything, I'm thin.

Aww 21.8? I was hoping I was bigger then that. Better get down to the gym then!

I'm pretty lean and cut if I don't mind saying so myself. I have a six pack so I think that probably speaks for itself.

I'd say I'm about the 'beanpole' range. Just imagine a 6'4" guy who weighs 170 pounds.
Skinny? Heck yes.

I blame it on a fast metabolism, combined with what I'm assuming is a parasite...or just a fast metabolism.

Who said parasite?

*cough*

I am 6'5 and weigh 150 pounds. The puts me in the underweight category. Since I'm really lanky and it has more space to spread out in I look emaciated.

I'm not fat, but no longer as thin as I used to be. (unfortunately there was no option for "slighly overweight" so I had to go with plain old "overweight" and feel like a fatass)

I'm a tad overweight, need to lose some stomach fat but that's about it. No muscle mass on my body though ;/

Your post motivated me to look up the stone to pounds conversion (1 stone = 14 pounds) and I plugged that into the BMI calculator above and it came up with 20, which falls within the normal weight range.

My job involves sitting in front of the computer all day; this combines with a real terrible period of stress eating had pushed my weight up waaaaaaaay too much.

Still too fat but at least now I'm eating better and going to the gym before work. I'm sure I would do even better with an outdoor hobby like biking or hiking. :)

I was heavier but am now 5'8, 115 pounds and underweight!

The ruins of my previous weight are still frustratingly evident...

5'8 and 110 lbs, so I guess I'm underweight.

Considering the fact that I've gained about 10 pounds of muscle over the past year, I'm still considered underweight, which is kinda scary. I should probably eat more. Ah well...

For me, 17.7, so, underweight. I'll probably rack up some more muscle between now and the here-after, so I'm not too worried at the moment.

I'm surprised by how many people say they are underweight. Are all you guys really using the BMI calculator above? I think some people who say they're underweight actually are technically normal weight, which is good news since most studies looking at various diseases versus weight have found a U-shaped curve (i.e. really thin and really obese people are at increased risk for the disease studied).

Right on the cusp of being underweight, but I'm still in the normal weight category- 6'4 and around 12 stone. I guess that's what happens when you play the cello......

I went and weighed/measured myself.

It seems I did my sums wrong, my weight in kg is actually 64.6 rather than 74, which is 142lb and not 11st at all. The bmi of 17 stands but my mental arithmetic could do with sharpening...

I'm around 5'11'' and around 11 stone so I'm ok. Don't eat after 6pm that's the key......

Anyhows, I'm not exactly thin. I'm not horridly overweight, but I do enjoy food more so than the general population.

I can't be arsed to figure either my height or weight, but I'm just a little overweight, most people don't even notice though because it's all on my stomach, easily covered with a slightly baggy shirt.

Same here.

I am extremely skinny (you can almost see my ribs), even though I tend to eat a lot.

I'm rather underwight.
I'm 189 cm tall and I weight about 63 kilo.
Don't know how to translate that for some of you guys though :/

Never the less, my blood pressure is rather low and I quite often go into black out mode for a few seconds when I stand up.
Although I've started to find these time when I stand up, lose most of my balance, become temporarily blind, and feeling all lightheaded, to be quite something fun to experience.
You're just... unaware of absolutely everything for a few seconds, then you remember it again.
When I remember it, I either feel dizzy or entertained.

Last i checked, my BMI was less than 10% but BMI is rather useless according to some sources, being vague and not really all that useful. At the time i thought that was normal but if 17% is skinny then i might need to eat a bit more.

I'm with you there.... But only if it's good food- "Heck, I'd pick good food over bad food any ol' day of the week!"

(I think it was Don Knotts who said that in 'The Ghost and Mr. Chicken', but I can't be entirely sure.....)

It's quite easy. All you have to do is take your weight and multiply it by 2.2, then take your height and divide it by 2.54, then divide the quotient by 12, take the remaining number after you've reached the highest possible whole number, and add it to the end of the number. Aren't conversions simple?

Must admit that I am overweight. I am a bit lazy when I can get away with it and it does not help that I like chocolate, cake, beer and food.

Apparently underweight, but that can't be right. My stomach bulges a little, not too much, maybe a centimeter or so. It's mostly muscle but still makes you look a bit fat. My friends nick-maned me "anorexic" because I don't eat much more than a meal a day usually. Not cause I don't wanna, just cause I'm so busy and almost never hungry. Question is, am I a gamer? No not really, but I DO like video games when I'm bored, but who doesn't these days besides old people, no offense to them or anything.

5'11
128 Pounds

And before you say my lifestyles unhealthy or some shit, I have plenty of energy, I can outrun my friends and easily last hours on a non-stop bike ride.

S'all good as long as it doesn't give you any health issues, imo.

I'm about six foot tall, and I weigh seventeen stone. And it isn't my fault, which is the biggest pile of ass ever.

You see, I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and because of that, I am unable to exercise. That coupled with my incredibly slow metabolism means that not only am I easily succeptable to getting fat, I am also unable to do anything about it.
I could always starve myself, but, strangely, medical professionals seem to think that would be a bad idea. And whenever I go on a low calorie diet, I don't get thinner, I get fatter, and then I begin to feel weak.

It's like something just fucking wants me to be a lardo, isn't it?
