So I was thinking the other day when someone asked me what my hobbys were. When is somthing more then a hobby.

This guy asked and I said the norm.. Videogames, dnd and music. I do music at uni, so most of the time im playing, writing or talking about music and music is somthing I want to do as a career.

At what point does somthing become more, is it still a hobby if you get paid to do it (would a guy who makes games still have games as his hobby), what do you call it when its more then a hobby

Discuss?

The Collins Dictionary defines Hobby as:
1. An activity pursued in spare time for pleasure or relaxation.
2. A small horse or pony.

My hobby of choice: writing stories and posting them on the web.

I have this crazy idea of actually getting something published into a book, and later on letting it be a screenplay, teleplay, or something, and getting bucks and fame from that, if possible.

I'd also done community theatre acting when I was back in my American hometown. Good times.

Still, I had to remember... even if I never got a dime or a mention in the hometown newspaper... I was doing it because it was fun. Anything else is gravy.

If your hobby, though, becomes something you can make a buck off of... particularly where you can actually life off it steadily... it becomes something I call "living your dream." :-)

That's my take on it, anyway.

That's quite amusing and related to one of my hobbies: expanding my vocabulary by reading dictionaries (usually Webster's, Americuh (f**k yeah!) and all that).

OOOOOOOXFOOOOOOOORD!

I write stuff, usually reviews of games, and occasionally draw.

Also, I used to be a mean cook.

Games are still a hobby for me, even though I work with them all the time. Though I will say my hobby games veer off mainstream quite a bit. And I've lost a lot of my taste for MMOGs in my spare time.

I would like a pony though.

I catapult burning puppies into orphanages. It's a good enough hobby.

I prefer less extraneous "u's" and the use of "er."

But on the subject of dictionaries have you ever seen a Funk and Wagnell's, that is one ponderous tome!

Another one of my hobbies is writting fiction.

If a hobby becomes something paid, it is then a side-job or career.
If a hobby becomes all-consuming it is then an obsession.
If your hobby gets you aroused it has transformed into a fettish.
If what was once a hobby is now your only source of happiness it is thus an anchor to your sanity.
And lastly if a hobby becomes something you dislike it is officially "work", paid or not.

It's possible to be paid to do something and still do it for relaxation on the side. Music would be the best example of this- bands that put out records and tour for months on end still faff about on their instrument at home to unwind, I would think. I would apply the same for paintball or sports...

Granted, whether it would be called a "hobby" anymore is arguable- since you're being paid, it's your job, but if you do the same thing in your spare time, for personal enjoyment, it's a hobby at that point...

I just confused myself.
