I hate commercials, they're the reason I hate T.V., but apparently it appeals to someone because they will not stop airing more and more. Very rarely, and I mean VERY rarely, a good one will be aired, however there is still way too many long, bad, irritating ones.

What do you think?

Without commercials we wouldn't have TV, so I tolerate them on the few occasions I watch TV

Bad ones get stuck in your mind more.

That being said I haven't seen a commercial in a long time that didn't make me want to buy with product less.

At least the commercials are less pretentious and less subtle. I really hate product placement.

Commercials are a necessary thing, but yes, they are annoying except on rare occasions. Once in a while I'll get a good laugh out of them, and once I was persuaded by a commercial to go buy something (It was McDonalds, I was hungry and the Big Mac on the ad looked rather nice.)

Very true, it's the price we pay to enjoy quality television. If only they could get their points across better, and faster. Then I wouldn't mind so much.

meh, Here in the UK we have very high quality adverts only with a few exceptions Cough*Cilit Bang, Moon Pig* cough so they never really bother me too much because they're quite artistic or use a good song.

We don't have some 50 year old in a cowboy hat standing in front of his warehouse shouting about how he must be mad to sell his products so cheaply...or those infomercial things that seem to be longer than the actual programme and seem to always end like this "also if you by now with a major credit card we'll throw in another completely free, plus a (insert vaguely relevant product here) worth over 15 dollars!"

The price I pay for quality television is on average $40-$50 per season the year after it airs (I buy DVD sets).

I don't mind commercials. I like the breathing space they offer so I can get up and check something or walk around or whatever. The only commercials I hate are network specific commercials and Jack Layton campaigns.

I don't like to waste my money, and thanks for the clarification at the end, without it I would have been lost (sarcasm).

It's good that someone is finally taking a hard stance against commercials!

Good for you! :D

I've not got such a thing against adverts, it's adverts which deliberately are set at a slightly higher volume than a normal show. They're not meant to do it, but they do. It's annoying and doesn't actually lodge the advert in my mind, just my displeasure about an advert being louder.

Personally, if I miss a show on TV, I watch it on Hulu.com, where there are very little ads, and the shows are in high quality, or at least higher than youtube.

unless you see an announcer almost cut his hand of with a samurai sword, then it's hilarious.

I don't watch TV, but radio commercials alone are enough to give me road rage. Thankfully this only happens when I forget to charge my ipod for the drive.

Dang it, I always forget to read the things below the link that say "Before you click it..."

I can see why it could scar anyone. I felt dumb just watching it, hah.

I'm actually a copywriter, but I still agree that adverts are irritating. But hey, I'm paid lots of money to come up with them, so I won't complain.

I use them as an excuse to do something else. Plus, they mean I don't have to pay through the nose for television, and they do actually work, in one way or another, on some people.

Watching a commercial is a way of paying for television without using your own wallet, you use your time instead (although in theory you're now more inclined to spend money on whatever was just advertised). They're a good way for networks to make money without charging their viewers, and frankly I don't mind them. Then again, I don't really watch TV.

Anarchy Online implemented in-game adds a while back, and it was a pretty good move for them; it meant more income, and they could then reduce the cost of membership, to zero at one point (I know 'cause I didn't feel like paying for the game, but for free it's not bad). I've heard that other games will be doing this soon, and frankly I'm for it as long as the developers can keep it from interfering with gameplay or becoming distracting or annoying.

There's no adverts. Well, you get like 1 or 2 adverts in between shows advertising what's on later, but I'll accept that if I don't get my viewing interupted every 10 minutes.

I find myself increasingly baffled by most ads today as they only vaguely represent what they are selling.

Just to bring a little happiness to this thread (NOTE: It's on Spanish, but it doesn't have a lot of speech):

It is at least one of the most decent commercials I've seen for a while.

I think they recently passed a law over here in England so they can't pull that shit anymore.

Also, while it might seem better at first to have no adverts breaking up the show, watching Heroes with a full bladder and no chance to go for another half-hour is not a pleasent experiance.

yeah I saw a Korean airplane commercial the other day and it didn't make any sense until the end when the title came up saying "Korean air getting you places(or whatever)" it was very abstract.

Ah right. If I watch TV, I usually watch Dave. Hmmm... that sounds kinda gay to everyone who doesn't know what Dave is...

They did? Well hopefully they put the law into effect soon, cuz I always get deafened when I watch TV with the surround on. All of a sudden I get Jamie Oliver screaming at me about bloody Sainsburys like the little girl he is.
