Really? I honestly hope your joking but each to his own I suppose. I just can't see it myself...How bout providing some defense for him? After watching him a couple times I don't really know him that well but I feel that I have a basic understanding of how he acts and it just doesn't seem fit for the riddler. |

In that particular train wreck of a movie a canonical Riddle would have been a little out of place, don't you think? But as for a Riddler in a GOOD movie... we need some one who can present hubris, genius, anger but also a sort've "fun" when it comes to the puzzles themselves. I'm going to go with either Neil Patrick Harris (So I watched Dr. Horrible recently, shoot me) or maybe Sean William Scott. I figure both of those guys are dying for a serious role, they both talk quickly but clearly for the riddles themselves, both have a lot of acting experience and both could dye their hair the necessary orange. |

I think if they stuck more to the 90s version of the Riddler (or the Batman the Animated Series version), Tennant could really work. The new version of the Riddler needs to be somewhere between sadist and genius with an overbearing ego. Someone so smart that they've developed a God complex. |

[ Goddamnit Hollywood. What is up with you and Johnny Depp? I actually like a couple Johnny Depp Movies, there's nothing wrong with the guy as an actor but stop trying to Shoe-horn himin every time you have a character who isn't completely sane! Other actors are capable of showing emotional imbalance you idiots! So he looks good in eye shadow! Fine! So his eyes bulge from his head a bit, fine! Maybe he's equipped to play 80% of over the top crazy people movies. Mark my words though, he is wrong for the Riddler. He'll screw it up. Riddler is a character that genuinely delights in playing games with the people catching him, he's a character grounded in arrogance. Believe me, that's different than playing homicidal maniac. It's also different from playing a pirate full of bravado. I realize Depp as other roles and taken to them well but I just can't see him here. |

Before you bash me, imagine JB in a role where he ISN'T playing his typecast character, but instead is just an outer shell for an insane personality like the Riddler. He's got the face for sure. |

He is wacky enough and has the acting chops to pull of the madness. That and Depp is just to over used for me these days. I still like him, but I am tired of seeing him. Personally though I hope the next villain is Bane. 'The Fall of the Dark Knight' concept would kick ass.

My sarcasm detector is broken. Are you serious when you say that Carey brought a DARKER EDGE to the movies? He was a fucking christmas light. I don't want to play this game, as I don't want to see the Riddler in the movie. He has no place in a Batman movie, he's just not a badass enough villain. In the comics, the Riddler is hardly a threat, more of a petty annoyance constantly overshadowed by more dangerous and deserving villains. The idea of him being a main villain of another Batman movie makes me sick. Maybe if he's just a small part, like Scarecrow was in Begins, that could work, but not the freaking archrival. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 380 Joined: 18 Sep 2008 | I'm liking alot of the ideas so far...I'm truly hoping that Johnny Depp is not the riddler, he is crazy yes, but does not have the deep settled arrogance and intelligence that the Riddler has. It would be a hard role for him but I think if they did choose him, he would have a shot in hell of doing it very well. If he did do well, he has the potential to make the movie amazing, but as I've said, his acting style does not suit the Riddler. Neil Patrick Harris was also a great suggestion but I don't think I've ever seen him portray a highly intellectual person very well. I think he could pull off a more subtle insanity mixed with extreme arrogance, but I wonder whether or not he could really pull off the kind of intellect the Riddler has. As for Jim Carey, NO. He's just not serious enough, he does not portray the correct personality to play the Riddler in a dark batman movie. My favorite so far still has to be Hugh Laurie, though I havent seen anyone else back it yet. |

I think perhaps Zachary Quinto would be good (albeit a little typecast) but I would like to see a sort of understated dark humour (Think Hamill's Joker)like James Spader or someone who seems so rediculously incompetant on the surface, like Zach Braff |

As a House fanboi, I could back Hugh Laurie. He's a talented actor and I'm sure he could pull off the role amicably. But no, my former position stands. No Riddler. |

Wait...wasn't Neil Patrick Harris in Starship Troopers??? ;) But I digress. Carrey's problem with his Riddler role was that he brought in too much fun to a role that was already BAD. Yes, as in three bricks and a toilet seat could have written a better plot line for him and Tommy Lee Jones BAD....As in it killed Batman:Year One until it became Batman Begins BAD. Actually Laurie has the arrogance, but I don't know if his house persona has enough "toying" personality. Riddler has taken a back seat in the comic books...but when placed right he was as much or more dangerous and unpredictable as the Joker. |

Nobody pictured Heath "Brokeback" Ledger as a proper joker, and Cillian "Breakfast at Pluto's" Murphy as a proper scarecrow, and yet they ran with it. So, in the good spirit of the Nolan, I'm gonna blurt names that jump out of left field too and that would probably do a good Riddler with some mental gymnastics: -Barry Pepper. |

Depp is out, his performance would be endlessly compared to Jack Sparrow, and he just doesn't seem right. What about Brad Pitt? Seriously. He can do comedy, he can do crazy, I'm not so sure he can be serious enough when needed, but I'd still think him better than some options. Another unmentioned good possibility, Jerry O'Connell (Quinn Mallory from Sliders). He fits the look to a "T", can do a deadpan stare, and has enough of an intellectual look to pull off more than just a comedic role. |

In my personal opinion, I think Heath Ledger was the best Joker in the Batman series but it leaves me wondering...
Who will play the Riddler?
After much thought, I finally came to the conclusion that I would love nothing more to see Hugh Laurie as the riddler. I can only imagine how amazing his performance would be. Hugh Laurie already has a real accent to match the Riddlers and the way that he delivers lines fits perfectly into the Riddler's character.
(Lets hope nobody else has posted this, I searched around myself with no results but it seems as though someone else has to look before it'll turn up...)
