not sure if FLCL is something you'll enjoy (it's really off-beat, though it does stay within the tech-orientation you seem to enjoy) but I wholly endorse these others. may wanna try the old stuff like Evangelion or Robotech, etc. also, if you're into fantasy stuff check out Full Metal Alchemist (just ignore all the fanboy ravings when you do so). maybe also Yu Yu Hakusho. |
Beat Writer Posts: 158 Joined: 17 Jun 2008 | Based on the Akira/Ninja Scroll/GitS, I'd say you'd enjoy the visceral action that is Claymore, Gungrave and Gantz (though with Gantz, you'd do well to stop watching the anime at ep.22 and switch to chapter 81 of the manga. The ending made absolutely no sense since the series was still being written when the show was made and the manga's storyline gets so much better). If you're looking for the same kind of action and drama but not quite as dark, you should check out Samurai Deeper Kyo, Get Backers and Bleach. I'll have more recommendations once you get through those ;) |

Holy cow man, did that come pre-baked or did you just do that? OP: I would defnitly start with "Neon Genesis Evangelion" It's amazing. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1411 Joined: 19 Oct 2008 | If you like Ninja Scroll you will like this one: Kurozuka, it just came out this season and up to episode 3 so far. I also recommend from fall 2008 line up: All time favs: Slayers, Outlaw Star, Macross, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion ( be prepared to watch second half twice at least), Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D, Black Lagoon. EDIT: I found this site very useful over the years, hers the link to Fall08 reviews: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/fall-2008-preview/2008-10-04 |

I agree with him on the "overrated" part but its still worth watching, some of the sub-lines might not kick in until you go to college and take something like philosophy 101 of mythology 101 though, so be prepared to be slightly disappointed at first. EDIT: I said it before and will say it again; Shinji (or w/e his name, main character) was made horribly. |

On the Record Posts: 5786 Joined: 21 Aug 2008 | hmmm, for films you might like these Ninja Scroll (very violent, but one of the best anime movies IMO) Ghost in the shell: innocence (when you're done with the first movie. Different writer but great all the same) Lupin the 3rd, the castle of cagliostro (vintage anime, lighthearted yet action packed crime caper which is definitely recommended) Perfect Blue (thriller, and my God what a thriller, just watch it, go now!) Grave of the fireflies (i have not seen it, but i heard you WILL cry if you watch this, apparently one of the most heart wrenching anime movies ever made, World war 2 anime movie) for series these are all amazing Naruto (ninjas, my favorite long running anime (more than 50 episodes) of all time. seriously its amazing, and later on the story gets rather twisted too) Gundam Wing (Mecha anime (giant robots), its vintage now, was released in 91 i think, but the story is so deep and great and the overall package so well put together that i still enjoy it to this day. Be warned though, it is heavily political, but never boring, i guarantee you that) Bleach (Death Gods, great fighting. I love it but while there are twists and turns in the plot, its not the most plot heavy anime out there, but still great. long running series. recommended) Death Note (Death Gods and suspense, one of the best developed anime ever made, if you only watch a few series, make sure this is one of them. short series) Fullmetal Alchemist (Alchemy and a masterful story, definitely one to watch. short series) Cowboy Bebop (possibly one of the greatest anime series of all time, bounty hunters. short series) Dragonball Z (.....) Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex (cyberpunk, very deep storyline, very intricate) One Piece (pirates, light hearted yet action packed, emotional, and hilarious at the same time, one of my favorite long running series) Samurai Champloo (from the makers of cowboy bebop, amazing also, samurai) Trigun (again an awesome anime, full of action and well developed characters, one of the best out there i think, dystopian sci-fi) Noir (incredible, assassins and amnesia, a great soundtrack, great story and a gunfight every episode, it actually had me hooked till the end) Black Lagoon (I know i have put up a lot of action anime, but these are all incredible, and this is no exception. Mercenaries in south asia, gunfighting) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2486 Joined: 7 Sep 2008 | If you liked Ninja Scroll, you'll like Basilisk (it's alternate title is The Kouga Ninja Scrolls, for one thing). As far as I'm concerned, Welcome to the NHK is better read than watched. GTO is great but the ending feels forced (like many of its kin, the anime caught up with the manga, forcing them to make up an ending). The good news is that the manga is pretty awesome. Hajime no Ippo is a good sports anime. It has dick jokes that are actually funny (maybe I shouldn't ahve mentioned this). Plus the action sequences are top-notch. You can really feel the impact made by each big hit. Good thing it gets another season this coming January. Death Note is the best one-shot anime. Be sure to watch it (or read the manga) without any prior knowledge about it. You'll be pleasantly entertained on how things play out. Eyeshield 21 and Slam Dunk are other sports anime that I really liked. The great thing here is that all members of the team receives their moments in the spotlight. Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic, Bleach, Ghost in the Shell, etc. There are too many to mention. I'd also recommend Blade of the Immortal (Mugen no Jyunin in Japanese), but I've only watched the first episode so far. If however, it ends up being just awesome as the manga , for one it had real emotional weight and shows scenes that are otherwise taboo - like the brutal murder of a kid, but does it in such a tasteful fashion (no pushing of the envelope for no reason here that you'll really feel for the characters and their plight - I guarantee you, it will be a wild ride (its manga is still ongoing). |

Overrated or not it's still a great watch and even though it's old a lot of the plot lines still seem pretty original because no one else has used them. My suggestions: |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 517 Joined: 2 Sep 2008 | - Gurren Lagann is a good one, been watching it on Sci-Fi for the past 10 weeks or so and its turned out really good. - Eureka Seven was another one that I found really good. Despite having mechs, it is not truely considered Mecha because almost all of the story is presented in the characters themselves, not the fighting. Overall, the cheese level can be funny at times, but the emotional bonds that the characters create, with not only themselves, but with the viewer, is just astounding. The ending ties it up really nicely, while still leaving stuff open for further reflection in the viewer, ie, a lot of "Why did they..." thinking. - Death Note was disturbing to me, and I couldnt really get into that whole psychopathic "protagonist" thing, but hey, maybe you will like it. - Cowboy Bebop, of course, one of the greats. Interesting storyline, followable plot (unlike some confusing ones), and overall, a great time. - Code Geass, I've been struggling to keep up with the series, as Adult Swim moved the damn showing time to FIVE AM ONLY, which is LONG after I've gone to bed on a Saturday and/or WAY too early for me to get up to see on a Sunday. But, from what I have seen, it keeps me trying, VERY enthralling series so far; the action and plot/character development is pure genius. Just a side note, stay AWAY from anything an eccentric chick tries to offer you, I got roped into watching Popotan from that! |
Muckraker Posts: 286 Joined: 25 Jan 2008 | Umm... Princess Mononoke? How has that not been mentioned yet? By the way, I second Avatar: The Last Airbender. A little childish, but really, really good for an American produced cartoon, especially season 2. |
Beat Writer Posts: 133 Joined: 9 Oct 2008 | You may also like Samurai 7, Appleseed Ex Machina, Ergo Proxy, Serial Experiments Lain, Rahxephon, and maybe Read or Die(the TV series). Elfen Lied might also be up your ally for blood, guts, gore, and just plain "WTF!?". I've heard Trinity Blood is supposed to be good(but I haven't seen it), as well as Claymore. Those are my suggestions; although, I admit, I'm not too much into the "harder" series. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2486 Joined: 7 Sep 2008 | Death Note is the only anime I know of that gave you the choice to pick the protagonist. Do you go for the God-Complex guy or the Everything For Justice guy? |

I have never been a huge anime fan, but I know there are some real gems in the 'genre'. Like so many things, the signal/noise ratio of good anime / dross is pretty poor.
To give you an indication of anime I responded well to:
- Akira
- Ghost in The Shell 1, 2 Standalone Complex 1 & 2
- Ninja Scroll
- Steam Boy
... and that's about it, which is why I was hoping based off that, those more knowledgable on the subject could provide some input.
