Gone Gonzo  Posts: 2138 Joined: 13 Oct 2008     | no one seems to have mentioned darker than black code geass and code geass R2 zegapain i found that MOST of the animes from before 2000 are not worth watching. the storlines and dialog is OK but they are rarely "dark" and the animation just annoys me also, don't bother with Dubs, go for the Japanese voices with English subtitles. oh yeah, and the best anime ever is... Dragon ball Z and GT!!!! hahahaha! so not! they are the ghey*! *on that subject, the movie "Fake" is meant to be a good "gay" amine. never watched it myself though, anyone that has, is it funny? |

anything by the sub team "GG" is fantastic, despite a few typos. but it is done in less than 24 hrs. that said many people i know do not like amine, but the only stuff they have seen is dodgy stuff like pokemon and DBZ. amine has a deeper storyline, unlike western comics which are almost always generic, tired gags and cheap flash animations. amine also tackles more serious subjects and has a storyline over (usually) more than one or two episodes, they are not made for ADHD kids on a steady diet of red cordial and Ritalin. |

Check out the episode with Black Getter's premiere. Mazinkaiser The best Non-HAX mecha EVER. It remakes the original Mazinger Z anime, the very FIRST mecha anime. Oh yeah, also King of Braves GaoGaiGar. I prefer Mazinkaiser, but its good if you really need to get Evangelion out of your head. By the way, look up Super Robot Wars. (Video games, not anime) |

As far as I'm concerned, retaining the honorifics (-kun, -san, -chan, etc.) would be enough. |

As far as I can tell, that's just plain laziness when they can't be bothered to choose a contextually appropriate translation. The word "nakama" is the most common offender. Sure, there might be some applications where you really need to use it (there is no direct English translation of the concept, though various authors have made up their own silly words with the same meaning), but most of the time it's actually closer to one or other of it's myriad conceptial connotations than any other. |

That would have to be the original Ghost in the Shell movie. It's as deep as it could get. The movie does have some awesome scenes, but the underlying themes are, well, underlying and might need more than one watch to digest all of it (much like Akira). |

The interstitial book (Ghost in the Shell 1.5, a set of shorts set in between the two comics) is far more clearly plotted. |

Maka's voice actor is new. And besides that she's not really bad. The voice fits the character. Although the voice is particularly annoying in Eppisode one and it doesn't come out right when she says black star. I hate black star with a flying passion to, and so does a good amount of the fandom but his fights are interesting, and he's better than Naruto. Naruto says he's a ninja but wears ORANGE, Orange is the most retarded color a ninja can wear, he's not silent, and the fights are over the top. Black Star is a hell of a lot closer to an assassin than Naruto is to a ninja so black star>Naruto. |

Okay, now this is something I really don't get. Some dubs are good (Rurouni Kenshin) , and some aren't (Love Hina). Dubs seem to have been getting better and better lately (with some exceptions), and I've found that, in rare cases, the English dub suits a particular character better than the original Japanese. I think it really depends on the anime itself. I prefer the English dub for, say...Rurouni Kenshin and Bleach, but the Japanese with English subtitles is infinitely better for Love Hina and Escaflowne. |

Ok, here are the ones you HAVE to watch to consider yourself an anime fan:
- Death Note
- Cowboy Bebop
- Hellsing OVAs
- Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Gungrave
- Trigun
- Escaflowne
On the comedy side:
- FLCL Furi Kuri
- Excel Saga
If you need to pick 1, and as much as it pains me to "leave out" the others, pick either Cowboy Bebop or Death Note (the former if you prefer reality based with a bit of fantasy, the latter if you prefer noir-like "close future" sci fi).
Without meaning to take anything from all the other great, or even amazing, animes I've ever watched Cowboy Bebop and Death Note are just above all that. Everything about them is ingeniously written, beautifully delivered and meticulously conceived down to the minor details.
