Rather than perpetuate the expansion of this (soon-to-be) bloated thread with my own list of favourites, I'd prefer to agree with the past posters and say that Cowboy Bebop is probably one of the most beautifully written and well-executed anime series to date. Regardless of your genre preferences, it's well worth the watch and won't take you long to get through them all. Music is also great throughout the series as is both Japanese and English (surprisingly) voice acting.

Ok, here are the ones you HAVE to watch to consider yourself an anime fan:

- Death Note
- Cowboy Bebop
- Hellsing OVAs
- Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Gungrave
- Trigun
- Escaflowne

On the comedy side:
- FLCL Furi Kuri
- Excel Saga

If you need to pick 1, and as much as it pains me to "leave out" the others, pick either Cowboy Bebop or Death Note (the former if you prefer reality based with a bit of fantasy, the latter if you prefer noir-like "close future" sci fi).

Without meaning to take anything from all the other great, or even amazing, animes I've ever watched Cowboy Bebop and Death Note are just above all that. Everything about them is ingeniously written, beautifully delivered and meticulously conceived down to the minor details.

no one seems to have mentioned

darker than black

code geass and code geass R2

zegapain

i found that MOST of the animes from before 2000 are not worth watching. the storlines and dialog is OK but they are rarely "dark" and the animation just annoys me

also, don't bother with Dubs, go for the Japanese voices with English subtitles.

oh yeah, and the best anime ever is... Dragon ball Z and GT!!!! hahahaha! so not! they are the ghey*!

*on that subject, the movie "Fake" is meant to be a good "gay" amine. never watched it myself though, anyone that has, is it funny?

GloatingSwine:

Pfft dont talk to me about official translations. Fansubs are usually far better.

If by "usually far better" you mean "frequently unspeakably terrible", possibly.

Fansubs are written by ear, not with access to the original script, leading to some persistent mistranslations (Raging Heart/Raising Heart, f'rinstance), and they're written for speed, not accuracy.

If there's an official subtitled release of a series, it's translation will always be better (TTGL is a recent example, Simon's speech in episode 11, which is one of the crowning moments of the series, makes no sense in the fansub, but the bandai translation not only makes sense, it also ties in to Simon's character in the whole second half of the series).

anything by the sub team "GG" is fantastic, despite a few typos. but it is done in less than 24 hrs.

that said

many people i know do not like amine, but the only stuff they have seen is dodgy stuff like pokemon and DBZ. amine has a deeper storyline, unlike western comics which are almost always generic, tired gags and cheap flash animations. amine also tackles more serious subjects and has a storyline over (usually) more than one or two episodes, they are not made for ADHD kids on a steady diet of red cordial and Ritalin.

Devilman is a good one (watch the 80's OVAs, not the 70's tv show)
Amon:Apocolypse of Devilman
They end on a somewhat negative note, but they are awesome regardless.

Getter Robo Armageddon, is the perfect example of a mech anime, it gives just enough story to justify the blood and action. Check out the episode with Black Getter's premiere.
(The Shin Getter Robo manga is better though. You might notice that Armageddon borrows heavily from it.{Or maybe the other way around})

Mazinkaiser The best Non-HAX mecha EVER. It remakes the original Mazinger Z anime, the very FIRST mecha anime.
(Note by Non-HAX I mean for example it doesn't grow larger than 5 universes in the final battle)

Oh yeah, also King of Braves GaoGaiGar. I prefer Mazinkaiser, but its good if you really need to get Evangelion out of your head.

By the way, look up Super Robot Wars. (Video games, not anime)

Bleach
Death Note
Devil May Cry
Rurouni Kenshin
Samurai Champloo
Fullmetal Alchemist

Syntax Error:
Death Note is the only anime I know of that gave you the choice to pick the protagonist. Do you go for the God-Complex guy or the Everything For Justice guy?

That is one of the reasons that I like Death Note. I go for the God-complex guy. But the Everything for justice guy is still cooler

Ok:
Death Note (Dub is pretty nice)
Code Geass (Sub. Sub. Sub. Dub sucks balls.)
Fullmetal Alchemist (Dub is very good)
Bleach (Sub over dub, but I can stomach the dub)
Cowboy Bebop (Dub)
Samurai Champloo (either is nice sub or dub)

"Just according to the Keikaku"
on top of screen: <TL note: Keikaku means plan>

There ARE offenders who translate anime and think that the intended audience knows half the Japanese they know, even if the translation as a whole is quite good. As far as I'm concerned, retaining the honorifics (-kun, -san, -chan, etc.) would be enough.

Doujin Work.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Lucky Star.
Cromartie High School
Shakugan no Shana.

Other recommendations I've got have been iterated too many times, I thought I'd add weight to a few previous ones and add one or two of my own. Don't think anyone mentioned Doujin Work, which is a shame.

As far as I can tell, that's just plain laziness when they can't be bothered to choose a contextually appropriate translation.

The word "nakama" is the most common offender. Sure, there might be some applications where you really need to use it (there is no direct English translation of the concept, though various authors have made up their own silly words with the same meaning), but most of the time it's actually closer to one or other of it's myriad conceptial connotations than any other.

i once saw an anime a while ago, but can't remember its name. It was something to do with a robotic cyborg agent that could turn invisible, though she had to take her clothes off first (typical).

If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

That would have to be the original Ghost in the Shell movie. It's as deep as it could get. The movie does have some awesome scenes, but the underlying themes are, well, underlying and might need more than one watch to digest all of it (much like Akira).

The Ghost in the Shell movie is otherwise known as a bunch of pretentious waffling tripe.

The comic and the series both handled the themes of humanity and identity far better.

I've only watched the original movie, and both Stand Alone Complexes. So I don't have much of a frame of reference since I haven't read any of the manga. Is Man-Machine interface any good?

naked robot/cyborgs? Sounds like Ghost in the Shell to me. Haven't seen it myself, keep meaning to but neve get round to it.

Edit: That's what I get for going for my bath before posting and forgetting to refresh the page.

Yes, but it's very different to the first comic in terms of character, and nothing like any of the movies, and it's one of Shirow's greatest feats of obscurism and complete refusal to explain anything that's going on.

The interstitial book (Ghost in the Shell 1.5, a set of shorts set in between the two comics) is far more clearly plotted.

Just did a serch on it and i think thats the one. I think its was shown coz it was related to the matrix as inspiration for the Wachowski brothers.

OK, so I'm gonna go on a major Ghost in the Shell binge some time (Academics and student duties come first =)).

To watch:
Solid State Society
Both Stand Alone Complexes

To Read:
The various manga once I know where to get them.

I think it would be better for me to skip out on the first movie and Innocence.

Amnestic, how do you do that line across text thing?

Soul eater. Great show. They have a HERMAPHRODITE EMO!!!! Ok, not hermaphrodite but the fanbase still doesn't what gender this emo is. And the anime creator and the person who made the manga do this on purpose instead of the creators of final fantasy. how many shows have that?

I tried watching Soul Eater, and though some of the ideas behind it were good, the main girl's voice was just horrible. That and Black Star.. Yes, we get it, Naruto is annoying, you wanted to parody him. Was it really necessary to waste an entire main character on that?

Let's see, stuff the OP might appreciate...
Wolf's Rain
Princess Monoke
FLCL
Haibane Renmei (maybe? It's a slow series and kind of hard to get into at first)
Escaflowne
Hajime no Ippo
Lupin III - Castle of Cagliostro
Death Note
Code Geass
Outlaw Star
Read or Die OVA (screw the TV series)
Full Metal Alchemist

Stuff I'd like to throw in just because I like them:
Yakitate! Japan
Gintama
Kenichi
Hunter x Hunter
Gurren Lagann
Ouran High School Host Club
Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto
Golden Boy
GTO
Honey and Clover

any Gibili production anime.
trust me, im half Japanese and have many contacts in Japan as well as being quite the fan of proper Japanese anime, and this is the best you can get
inside Japan, at least, Gibili productions is the most famous anime producer, and have made many brilliant anime films, known for great imaginative, deep stories, brilliant drawing, loveable/memorable characters etc etc

Maka's voice actor is new. And besides that she's not really bad. The voice fits the character. Although the voice is particularly annoying in Eppisode one and it doesn't come out right when she says black star. I hate black star with a flying passion to, and so does a good amount of the fandom but his fights are interesting, and he's better than Naruto. Naruto says he's a ninja but wears ORANGE, Orange is the most retarded color a ninja can wear, he's not silent, and the fights are over the top. Black Star is a hell of a lot closer to an assassin than Naruto is to a ninja so black star>Naruto.

It should go without saying not to watch the U.S release and base the show on that unless told otherwise.

Okay, now this is something I really don't get.

Some dubs are good (Rurouni Kenshin) , and some aren't (Love Hina). Dubs seem to have been getting better and better lately (with some exceptions), and I've found that, in rare cases, the English dub suits a particular character better than the original Japanese.

I think it really depends on the anime itself. I prefer the English dub for, say...Rurouni Kenshin and Bleach, but the Japanese with English subtitles is infinitely better for Love Hina and Escaflowne.
