This has been big news locally, the shortsightedness of our lawmakers. What's fascinating is on TV they keep saying how all the senators thought "The spirit of this law is newborns, but we shouldn't specify that to the letter, no one would be that horrible."
We've even had people from other states drive great distances to drop their kids off. This law is basically a preamble to outlaw abortion. Short little article here:
Why would you raise a child for 15 years and then decide oh i dont want you anymore? These parents should have thought about it long before they started doing the nasty and popping out babies.
Maybe there should be some sort of screening process to decide whether or not people should have children. Besides the usual biological method, of course...
Let me preface this with the statement that I have done no further research beyond reading the article linked above. Perhaps I am missing some important element of the law in question.
How could people not have seen this coming? It is all too easy to envision a scenario where a less-than-scrupulous parent could use this as a psychological weapon. When I last checked, lawmakers are not supposed to bank on people's following the 'spirit' of a piece of legislation. These folks would do well to remember the golden rule of gaming: "if it isn't there, it isn't there."
On another note, did anyone else notice that the article and the caption beside it give the senator different first names?
Elurindel: Maybe there should be some sort of screening process to decide whether or not people should have children. Besides the usual biological method, of course...
We did that once, and the results were less than glorious.
And this is why outlawing abortion is a bad idea, this is also why everyone should be sterilized at birth.
Here are my thoughts on the matter... ATTENTION HUMANITY! BY BEING TOO FUCKING STUPID AND OVERPOPULATING THE PLANET YOU HAVE LOST YOUR RIGHT TO FREELY REPRODUCE! APPLICATIONS FOR PARENTING WILL BE DISTRIBUTED!
So are they handing out free children? I need one that can clean house pretty good, must be old enough to work with chemicals such as Mr. Clean and Draino... Could take on a second one too if he/she/it is any good at renovations and/or fixing things.
This article sounds like something you would read on The Onion it's so ridiculous. Humanity never ceases to disgust me.
reaper_2k9: Why would you raise a child for 15 years and then decide oh i dont want you anymore? These parents should have thought about it long before they started doing the nasty and popping out babies.
Bingo. People get so caught up in sex because it feels good, then are totally surprised when they conceive a child - the primary purpose of sexual intercourse. Why do it if you're not prepared for the consequences?
I think Nebraska should add something to that law that says in order to drop off a kid the parents have to get a mandatory vasectomy and tubal ligation....without anesthesia.

People really shouldnt be surprised when they have unprotected sex and then whoops i'm pregnant unless they honestley dont know where babies come from

While I'm sure your comment was (partially) in jest, I'd like to inquire about your opinions on humans who are in a permanent vegetative state or who lack higher brain functions. I suppose what I'm really asking is "How do you define human?"
I'm not really sure what to think of this to be honest. On the one hand it's detestable thing that a parent can just abandon their child on a hospital doorstep and not face prosecution. On the other hand, perhaps they're doing it for a good reason. I mean, I doubt all of them are. In cases like these(Old article, one I read a while back) I'd much rather the parent abandon their child as it'll get a better life out of foster care.
That said, I really think we should start making parents take compulsory courses/tests if they want to have kids. As the politicians are always saying "Children are our future!".
*tangent* Oh, and perhaps we could teach sex education which doesn't consist entirely of Abistinence. Sometimes I wonder if the people setting curriculums forget the teenagers want to have sex. A lot. Somehow I've always been under the impression telling them not to won't really do much. */tangent*
James Raynor: Sounds like abandonment instead of abortion.
I concur that the title is a tad misleading.
What I find fascinating is that most people would call a safe-haven surrender an act of abandonment. I can see how the (properly structured) law can avoid situations of total abandonment, such as ditching a stroller in a store, but many people I know would decry consigning a child to the foster care system.
My wife and I are in the process of adopting domestically, and I was surprised to learn about the resources available to birthmothers if they know where to look. To be honest, I would prefer that a person considering a safe-haven surrender make an adoption plan.
I am so disgusted by the 'parents' who would do this. Imagine your parents just saying 'screw it!' and leaving you in a hospital. Where is the conscience? The love?
What's worse is you have to wonder how terrible their home-life must have been with parents so willing to abandon them. And when I go home tonight I'm going to turn on the news and have the media bitch about the state of the youth and how video games and movies and music are corrupting them.
Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say. As awful and traumatic it must be for those kids to be left at a hospital by their "parent", hopefully now they'll go into a good home where someone will be there to show them the kind of love and support they need to succeed in life.
Personally, this is only encouraging me to become a foster parent.

What a wonderful world we live in.
You assume much, and assumption is a dangerous beast.
If the parents in such a situation surrender a child in order to have more time to go to the movies, most would call their action selfish. If they have lost their jobs and are days from losing their home, is the same action selfish? Does a loving parent consign his or her child to homelessness? When the choice is to buy food for your children or to buy the medicine which keeps you alive to be with your children, what does conscience demand?
As I said above, I think adoption is a better alternative than an outright surrender, yet demanding a biological parent keep a child in a wretched situation over matters of conscience looks slightly draconian from my seat.

I stand corrected, point well made. Although my family has always been on the 'lower rung' of the income ladder (Nothing like living off of peanut butter and bread), and I would have NEVER wanted to leave my family if the option arose.
I do, however, see your point and I did assume much. One can sometimes only see the worst in people when that is all one is given glimpses of. Let's hope that these parents did this out of such a need rather then out of selfish greed (Almost rhymed).
in America are you actually taught that abstinence is a good thing to do in sex ed? also i like looking at Sarah Palin (could end the statement there) say you should teach abstinence only sex ed and then her daughter the 17 single mother, hmmmmm i wonder why she was fucking stupid enough to not use a condom, her dumb fuck of a mother thought it was bad to teach her how to not ruin your life at 17. Then, its alright there being forced to marry each other. you know i hope he daughter is beaten to death by her husband just prove how stupid abstinence only sex ed is. (rant over)
WHAT THE FUCK!? How do you do that to a child? What the fuck? WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!? This is beyond disgusting. Great, America has taken another step towards third world child abandonment.
Keep in mind that I believe the Nebraska law to be utterly broken. While a correctly framed safe-haven law serves the purpose of devaluing total abandonment, the current state of affairs in Nebraska (as I and, it would seem, the article understand it) leaves things far too open to Machiavellian manipulation.
Perhaps these surrendered teens were in the situations I described earlier, or maybe their parents used this law as a weapon. I wish I could say for certain.
Elurindel: Maybe there should be some sort of screening process to decide whether or not people should have children. Besides the usual biological method, of course...
the biological method never works out well...

well you see our country is run by religious conservatives that have no idea how the world works anymore, and they love to shove their values down the WHOLE country's throat, they therefore like the schools to teach kids about sex then tell them not to do it, and most don't bother to inform about contraceptives. they tell schools to do it because they don't want to feel embarassed in front of the children they already ignore, these children then proceed to screw without contraception, leading to pregnancy they don't want/can't handle, and have their choice to abort the accidental pregnancy under attack by the parents that wouldn't tell them about contraceptives in the first place, and there you have it. It is a viscous cycle. but waddya gonna do? (shrugs)

I don't know about you guys, but my sex ed was: Sex=babies. Condoms are for not having babies, but they're not 100% reliable. There's also birth control, but you can't have any because you're not 18. AIDS IS BAD!!!!!!! Over the course of several weeks. So, I'm not sure what schools you guys went to, but whatever.

Sounds pretty similar to mine. Though I'd like to add we got shown a large blue dildo as a tool for practising condom application. Generated many a giggle in the class.

1. Once you're a veggie and can't go back that's when you are no longer you, just your body while your mind is on permanent vacation without giving you so much as a 'good luck mate.' 2. if the parent is a danger to the child I'm fine, but if you just don't want them you're terrible. 3. Young adults who can vote and parents tend to make up a large percentage of constituents and like to think they/their child will do something with their life other than say "paper or plastic." 4. Teenagers tend to do the opposite of what the're told(call it obvious but it's true), saying don't do this(when they want to(a lot)) just isn't going to cut it, so tell them how to prevent it in a practical way and hopefully they don't make a mess of things.

Same here...... A dildo is a little... much.
We had carrots and a Banana themed Dildo. The best of both worlds I suppose.
It's slightly disgusting that someone would abandon a child because they didn't want them anymore. I can understand someone giving up a child at a young age, some people just aren't fit to raise a child and I think both parties gain something when that happens but you would think that after 17 years you would start to love your kid or at least not want to throw him away. It must be very mentally scaring for the older ones.
