How exactly does it work?
I have 6 games I don't want anymore, 3 Xbox games (Halo, Halo 2, and Half Life 2), and 3 360 games (Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Timeshift).
I've never traded in anything before, so I wanna know what the details are.
Do they take original Xbox games still?

I would advise that you don't trade in at a gamestop. Each game you trade in gets you a certain amount of store credit, not cash. Trade in somewhere else, and your likely to get actual money, and more of it than you would at gamestop.

Use ebay.
If you are too young/don't hold an account get your parents/friend to ebay them for you.

You will get a deal five times better out of ebay than from any high street store, I promise.

You can get cash but it would be worth less than the store credit.

They look into your eyes as sternly as possible and say, "I'll give you $15 for all 6". Then after you say either yes or no, they then ask, "Would you like to preorder an upcoming 360 title?"

Gamestop sucks.

You use the postal service and add that to the price of the game at sale. Even trans US it won't be much for a DVD case sized object, just remember to put US only on the delivery options.

High street stores take a look at all your games, checking the manual/disc is there and in good condition, and then giving you a price for each. Usually not too much ($10 each in my limited experience.) You also need to bring along ID or an Adult with some if you're under 18 (at least, you have to in Australia.)

If you sell online you'll get a lot more money.

It works like this normally. If you have 3 games worth over 8 bucks each you can get a new release. If the 3 games are worth more collectively than the price of the new release you get store credit. If you don't want a new release they give you credit to use on anything in store. And using credit makes it tax free. You need ID (I dunno if you need a parent if under 18). Also check for deals before you trade. I have found a few times I made an extra 50 to 100 bucks in credit by hitting GS or EB at the right time.

I wouldn't sell them, keep them you might want to play them in years to come. In like 10 years they will become classics or at least you will have them, the games might be like the NES games today. To answer your question though, don't go to game stop; go anywhere but there:Eb games, Blockbuster, or even eBay you won't get much money either way though and then you will come back 4 days later and see each game for 30 bucks.

Thats the thing.

I've played these games to death, and then resurrected them and killed them again.

I know the maps backwards and upside down.
I can play Halo 2 and talk along to scripted dialogue and cutscenes.

Its like a book you've read a million times, you don't have to read it anymore, you've done memorized the thing.

Actually, it's more like you trade in nine of your 360 games and they give you five bucks for the lot of 'em, then sell you a pre-order to a game that will turn out to be cruddy.

Sell everything online. It's ALWAYS better.

It's not any platform. I doubt you could trade 2 ps1 games for a 360 one.
It would have to be from the same generation of consoles.
But yeah. New Zealand is awesome.

I sold Phantasy Star Online for the Gamecube for $2 of store credit. I also got some card doohickey that allowed me to legally download 5 songs for free. It is worth noting, however, that I really HATED that game, and that the Hock Shop I tried selling it to before wouldn't buy it because it was an online game.

However, I didn't get the jackass eager-to-rip-you off and eat your soul attitude from the clerk that Gamestop/EB Games has a reputation for. Upon telling her that I wanted to sell the game, the response was something along the lines of "Are you sure you want to sell it? You'll only get $2." The EB that I go to I guess is just an exception to the rule, what with their generally friendly staff and whatnot.

As someone who used to work in one, I can't imagine anything has changed since way back then, let me try to explain how it works. Special deals and events aside every game has a specific trade in value. As near as myself and fellow employees could guess back then, this is based on several variables.

Time since release - obviously newer games net you more value. The most you are every going to get for a game is ~20-25 that you could get if you traded it back in the same week it came out.

Number of copies the store/company had - annual series games, for example Madden, you are unlikely to get almost anything for. We simply get hundreds of copies in trade.

Rarity of the title - independent of the number of copies there did seems to be a variable of rarity. You could bring in a bucket of PS1 games all of which trade in for less then a dollar probably, but if you had a copy of Vagrant Story or Valkyrie Profile in there then those might get $5.

Specific series - anything with Mario or Pokemon the system would give above average values too. Not sure why, it just did.

*if you want cash instead you loss a large percent of the value. It used to be 20%, I am not sure what it in now.

As other people have suggested the general rule of thumb is try to sell them yourself. Let say Gamestop buys your game for $5. They then sell it for $15. So instead you sell it to a friend for $10. Then you both make out with a better deal. You get more money and he gets it for less. The only time I have found it worth trading games in was in conjunction with specific trade in deals and promotions.

I strongly suggest just selling locally. Craigslist maybe or if you have friends who are interested in the game you can sell it to them. Seriously selling it to your friends at half retail price fetches you more money than gamestop... i strongly suggest googling " whistle blower zero " and watching his series on why gamestop sucks
