Red Guard Posts: 4931 Joined: 14 Oct 2007 | Can I get a "Motherfucking HELL YEAH"? I think this'd be great, especially if it can be held in conjunction with smaller Meet-ups so people can connect to the Escapicon direct with a webcam link and whatever else, similar to what some people will be doing in Sydney. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 3644 Joined: 3 Apr 2008 | I shall add your "HELL YEAH" to the box |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1592 Joined: 9 Jul 2008 | HELL YEAH!!!! I would be up for that. Could bring the Xbox with me. But budget means I would only be able to go to London if it was held there. |

Hence the smaller meet-ups, and why it moves from year to year. A similar thing has been done with another site I'm on, and so far the 'conventions' I've been to were great. |

Well we have 4 locations... depends on what the majority wants |
On the Record Posts: 5175 Joined: 3 Mar 2008 | Very interesting idea you have there. I won't be able to come if it's not in Sydney, though. However, you have my joint approval. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2621 Joined: 27 Aug 2008 | Hell yeah but I'm one of the British Escapists so I doubt I'll be attending! |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3644 Joined: 3 Apr 2008 | hmmm... If we were to make it move around... perhaps every 6 months... And we are adding a fith location. Auckland, New Zealand. Why? because I live there and the Iron Ninja (now made of win) live there |

Yeah, it`s just that from Eastern Europe (where I leave) to any of these locations is one looong walk. :) |

...Do a poll finding out which country, buy a few maps and find somewhere roughly centered on major "Hives" of Escapists then set up one party in each country/continent. Then connect it all up with web-cams. If trying to get game companies to pay for it remember that they won't care about 10 guys meeting in a basement to play GoW 2, they want huge conventions. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 617 Joined: 22 Oct 2008 | This sounds like a great idea its just the whole location issue maybe you could look at how many people live where and use that as a guide for a venue. |

hmm... It would spam the RSS though... To PM and VIRGIL |
BANNED Posts: 12958 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | With the growing popularity of this site, and the at present need for far more major gaming and press events, I would say this could actually fill said need. And as such due to its lack of any decent gaming Expos, it would seem that Sydney would be the most logical choice. Gone Gonzo Posts: 3587 Joined: 6 Aug 2008 | Also get permission, you are using the Escapist name and the game companies if they get interested will try to whore the site. Also, you can't have alcohol at conventions. Too many under-agers. Also, conventions are freaking expensive, even if very small. |
Red Guard Posts: 4931 Joined: 14 Oct 2007 | Additionally, if one was to say, put up a LAN hub and invite those who are interested to bring their computers, then you could invite various gaming developers to offer time-limit trials to these people as teasers. It'd work fantastically for things like Starcraft II |

If we are in Auckland there is a company that builds gaming PC's that would be keen to supply PC's |

Also security. If anyone who knows tech and is capable of theft a room full of semi-nerds with expensive computers is too easy to pass up. And gate crashers suck, you don't want a bunch of randoms who think it's a game convention and keep saying "You've already played for 10 minutes, it's my turn" to show up and drag down the buzz of Escapicon. |

pfft... quite a few of us are underage actually.... |
Beat Writer Posts: 183 Joined: 8 Jun 2008 | Aside from the logistics it sounds like a great idea! Especially those considering Sydney as we seriously have next to nothing in this city for gamer communities (missed the last 2 supernovas) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3644 Joined: 3 Apr 2008 | serious question here guys... Shall we do a once every 2 years event in a central location OR one event every 6 months in 4 locations |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3587 Joined: 6 Aug 2008 |
4 locations so you can get as many Escapists involved as possible, but every six months and it will get a bit repetitive. Maybe annualy. |
Red Guard Posts: 4931 Joined: 14 Oct 2007 | I think it should be annual, with one main one and video links to other locations with smaller cons. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3644 Joined: 3 Apr 2008 | taking that on board Current Plan A convention in Sydney... that seems to be the general consensus... once a year Other mini cons can happen wherever and are linked in via webcam I think we should have a fight between Ultrajoe and Labyrinth... she can have her riding crop |
Red Guard Posts: 4931 Joined: 14 Oct 2007 |
Ultrajoe and I battle not with fists but with minds. It proves much more Epic. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1299 Joined: 27 Mar 2008 | How long will each convention stay before it closes? |

Good day everyone.
Inspired by the 'Sydney Meetup' I have decided to embark on a quest to create an 'once every 2 years event' The Escapicon
**********************************************************************************
The Escapicon (Escapist Convention) is to be held once every 2 years (mostly due to the sheer number of different locations members of the Escapist are located). It can follow the formula of PAX or we could create our own formula for success
Who:
Members of the Escapist and Warcry would be eligible to purchase tickets to the Escapicon. Some people who are new and are relatively unknown to the community would not apply in most cases.
Where:
There are 4 possible locations for this to be held.
1- Somewhere in Durham, North Carolina. This is on the list as it is the location of the Themis Media headquarters
2- Sydney, Australia. There is a large amount of Escapist regulars in this country
3- Tokyo, Japan. Obvious choice as it is the birthplace of gaming as we know it. It is also rather central and easily accessible to most of Europe, USA and Australasia.
4- London, England. There is a decent amount of Escapists in England. This does seem to be a rather illogical choice however due to its remoteness from the Pacific area and Eastern Europe.
The exact location in these areas would have to be sorted before the event is even announced to the general public.
What
The Escapicon is in essence, a party. There can be copious amounts of Booze and food. Along with the latest games available for play it will be a giant 'gamer party' for all.
We could have some 'Internet Celebrity' guests show up and make presentations, speeches or Rants. In particular the ones who feature on the Escapist.
" Ben "Yahtzee"Croshaw- Zero Punctuation
" Chris Slack- Creator and main actor of De-Rez
" Robert Moran- Creators of "Unforgotten Realms"
" Shamus Young- Creator of "Stolen Pixels"
We could possibly have some YouTube celebrities attend
" Dr Ashen- star of the 'ashens' series. www.ashens.com
" Ron Standard- Parodies professional reviewers
" The "will it blend" guy
There is also the possibility of some gaming celebrities
" CliffyB (Dude Huge)
" Miyamoto
" Richard Garriot
" Clive Barker
If some of the more prominent members of the community and staff are willing they could possibly make speeches, rants or presentations
" Khell Sennet
" Russ Pitts
" Landslide
" Susan Arendt
" Ultrajoe
" wilsonscrazybed
" Anarchemitis (The Colours!!!)
The potential for guests is rather large and could be a rather large draw card.
Games
We can have a section of the Con dedicated to games. Consoles can be set up and if possible Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo could provide games for us to play or if enough of the players bring multiplayer games with multi-console capability they will be able to play those.
If people can transport their Pc's or laptops to the event and can have LAN games. From what I have gathered COD4, TF2 and Counter Strike are the more popular games with the PC gamers. Laptops are prbably a better choice for people bringing thier own
There is possibly a few companies out there willing to sponsor the event with some PC's. We would have to check it out.
Paying for the event
I was thinking of making this a "pay to go convention" however some of the costs could be offset with sponsors and fund raising. (I have no Idea how that is going to work but it's an idea nonetheless.)
There can be package deals offered with Hotel/Motel roooms and possibly transport covered in the ticket.
************************************************************************************
Thats all I have so far, any other things to add. Opinions and thoughts are more than welcome.
And yes. I ripped that image from the Escapist store.

Sorry for the fails everyone...(I hate state abbreviations)
