*pets the kitten* Come now, we will simply use PAX as the host organism for our meetup. It's right in downtown Seattle, so we could always head off and do stuff outside of PAXif we like,

i like this. we dont have the money or the local community to do a new event, e for all just shut down after one year of failure. and how many people would realistically come to an event like this? 20? 30? but if we just do an escapist trip to pax it wouldnt be so much of an investment thus less likely to fail.

With the right events going on, you'd be surprised at how many people would show up.

If Themis and the Escapist staff decide this is a good idea, I think there's an excellent chance it'll be utterly fantastic.

can you imagine flying out to whereever and paying hundreds of dollars to meeta couple dozen people? i cant to be honest. i like you guys and all but thats a lot of money. how many people are willing to do that? what makes you think they will?

If I have the money, I will do it, without question. So, at least one. And because I understand it from a personal perspective.

congrats, you and five others can throw a party. just sayin that you are probably an exception to a rule. we should probably make a poll thread and ask about it

I'm certainly interested. I don't know if I could make it. I'd much it be in NC. ALso, seriously, how is Japan easy to get to for everyone, but London isn't? And how is it inaccessible to by eastern European people?

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but I think it would be a smart idea to rotate it. I'd love to come, but I can't afford tickets to Australia or London or Japan. But I could drive down to North Carolina for the convention. Just as I"m sure not every Briton could fly to America or Australia or where ever.

You, sir, are incredibly lucky.....

Then again, my gaming pc from home arrived today, so I'm in the same lucky boat (all was fine until the graphics cards overheated.....Then I had to underclock them......)

Hey everyone - smallharmlesskitten messaged me to make sure we saw this thread, so I wanted to return the favor and make sure I responded here.

It's extremely gratifying to see this level of interest and passion for an Escapist festival of some sort. We love the idea of a convention and have wanted to do one for a long time.

That said, there are real concerns that have stopped us from doing it so far. One, doing a convention is a huge effort and we would only want to do an official Escapist event if we could do it on a grand scale. We've got our hands pretty full with the weekly issues, the daily news, the new reviews, video shows, etc., and I don't know if we can add event planning to that.

Two, within the game industry at least, there's a lot of conventions already - ranging from GDC to PAX to Dragoncon - and even some big ones are having trouble getting attendees for the coming year, especially with the bad economy. So it might not be the best time to try to put together a new con.

So for those reasons we are still evaluating whether or not it makes sense for us to be working on an "Escapicon" right now, or if it's something we should come back to. The level of enthusiasm we've seen on the forums is definitely a nod in favor.

If we do move in that direction, I will definitely let you guys know! If we ultimately decide now isn't the time for us to do a conference, I think it would be a good start, at least, to try to coordinate some meet-ups, and we might be able to work with readers in various places to help get some of those going. (I've always admired the FARK community for their continuous meet-ups all around the world.) Either way, it's inspiring to see that you guys would so passionately want to be involved.

So please stay tuned. And thanks again to smallharmlesskitten for starting this conversation.

Well...we've often ran Mini-icon's within main gaming conventions, and Continuum 2010 (in sunny Leicester, UK) is ran by some friends of mine. I'm sure they'd be happy to have a Mini-Con within Continuum for the Escapists, and being central to England, it's quite easy to get to.

There is hideous amounts of drink, roleplaying/board/live roleplaying as well, and probably a few games run by me. I could even have a game of Paranoia ready for Wilson. :)

TEXT WALL AWAYYYYYYY!!!!

Just Wondering Archon.

Would you like me to write up a proper plan. Like 10-15 pages proper (possibly more) with pictures and example costs and everything?

I'm bored right now...

This is like your obsession now isn't it? Still, a mini-con sounds interesting. You might even just have a small party, kinda like an Escapist office party but instead of co workers it's co posters and instead of insulting the boss someone insults valve or something like that.

Way ahead of you, the sydney meet-a-thon aside, i got into an argument with an escapist in real life just the other day! Not exactly a meet-up, but i'm proud to report Escapists are just as eloquent in their verbiage outside the tubes as they are in. Never have i been more deliciously insulted.

Ok, i made that up.

But it would be cool.

Kitten, if i may suggest, perhaps you should look for people with experience in these matters to advise you. There's no shame in asking a professional on the best places to start. They don't need to help, but in terms of advice they can be no end of support.

I have just finished reading all 12 pages of this thread. I can safely say that if I am seen as a "recognised" member of the escapist and allowed entry then I would drive up to Sydney, no doubt about it.

Don't fret, I'm sure I can provide you with an overly elegant dressing down when you appear at Escapism Sydney.

By the way, it's been settled to be the 13th, meeting at 9:30am at Sydney Central trainstation.

For the main Escapicon or for our little meet-up? If you can come for the later, it would be win. Let me know.

Well mum said I am a winner. So I shall fulfil my destiny and be appearing at the smaller meet-up. When is that meant for?

EDIT: Well is not when.

It's a situation of "Ask around, see what's available." I can't imagine most will stay the night. Backpacker hostels are fairly cheap, there's one close to Newtown (Billabong Gardens) which is $30 a night one person. You'll likely need to book that ahead however.

Central for sure. The furthest out we'll be likely to get is Newtown or Paddy's.

I'm from Vic so I have no idea where those to places are. I'm off to google maps.

EDIT: That's still pretty much central.

Yeah. Think you'd be able to make it?
