Geek is what cute girls who play Nintendo Wii all the time with their bespeckled girlfriends, and therefore has a cuter, more positive connotation. They wouldn't call themselves nerds in their Facebook blurb. therefore I'm a geek. Though really my full title would be Mr Jebus rockponce-geek-emo-sexy Saves

The "emo" bit disturbs me. You dont call yourself an emo if you are. Just let people figure it out.

I don't really consider myself emo, I just get called that by people who are jealous of my fantastic hair.

I'm neither.

Not smart enough to be a nerd and I'm not electronically gifted enough to be a geek.

I don't like being called a nerd.

Geek is fine.

Geek has been somewhat taken back, it's okay to be geeky. It just implies knowledge.

Nerd implies basement dwelling hermit, who is knowledgeable but has asperger's syndrome and is allergic to sunlight.

I don't care what the word is at all. I care slightly more, though, about what the person means by it, since everyone seems to have a different understanding of the terms.

If a person says, "You're just a stupid <name>!" Then it's offensive. But if someone were to say, "Yeah, but you're <name>ier than him." Then it's just a word.

They're synonyms. Just think, there's the "jock." That's one word, and it can be used either offensively or not. The <name> group has two words (or even three if you include "dork") that mean the same thing, and can both (or all) be used either offensively or not.

This logic works with most any noun used to refer to a person. "You're just one of those dumb theoretical physicists! Haha, geek!" See, we've used both "theoretical physicist" and "geek," both offensively.

And everyone here is probably a gamer. And anyone here is just a dumb gamer.

Just add adjectives and you've got some mean soup cookin'! You could lessen it slightly, too, by taking out the adjectives and keeping the 'just' part. So you could have "You're just a nerd, though," and it would remain offensive.

I don't really care, the people refer to me using those terms don't do so negatively, so I'm perfectly okay with them.

If, however, someone uses them viciously, they will get a piece of my mind.

Why do people assume that being a geek is a negative thing?

It's because most geeks are inherently annoying, so annoying that most other geeks don't like them.

Difference between geeks and nerds as i see it: geeks are way more focused. You can be a Star Wars geek, but you cannot be a Star Wars nerd. Nerds are more "general" and less focused.
You can ask a really nerdy movienerd about his favorite movie, and he would probably compare it's good points with other movies he have seen. Ask a really geeky geek about his favorite movie and he would probably quote the whole movie to prove its awesomeness.

Geek, i feel that nerd is derogative term, whereas geek is something more positive.

I think a new name should be invented as 90% of people under 40 are now called geeks.
How about...just calling them....Majority? and calling the non-gamers Marginals.

I'm not smart enough to be a nerd. I'm close to "genius" IQ but I didn't cross the boundary so I don't feel comfortable rubbing elbows with math whizzes or slick software programmers. My doctor friends make me feel like I'm a disappointment to someone. I prefer geek because to me it means a person who has my interests and hobbies; gaming, RPGs, Doctor Who fanboying, IDM music collecting, etc.
