I don't really consider myself emo, I just get called that by people who are jealous of my fantastic hair. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 434 Joined: 6 Aug 2008 | I'm neither. Not smart enough to be a nerd and I'm not electronically gifted enough to be a geek. |

Well if it's so fantastic... will you give Yourself the honour of showing it to me?? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1797 Joined: 29 May 2008 | I don't like being called a nerd. Geek is fine. Geek has been somewhat taken back, it's okay to be geeky. It just implies knowledge. Nerd implies basement dwelling hermit, who is knowledgeable but has asperger's syndrome and is allergic to sunlight. |

I care slightly more, though, about what the person means by it, since everyone seems to have a different understanding of the terms. If a person says, "You're just a stupid <name>!" Then it's offensive. But if someone were to say, "Yeah, but you're <name>ier than him." Then it's just a word. They're synonyms. Just think, there's the "jock." That's one word, and it can be used either offensively or not. The <name> group has two words (or even three if you include "dork") that mean the same thing, and can both (or all) be used either offensively or not. This logic works with most any noun used to refer to a person. "You're just one of those dumb theoretical physicists! Haha, geek!" See, we've used both "theoretical physicist" and "geek," both offensively. And everyone here is probably a gamer. And anyone here is just a dumb gamer. Just add adjectives and you've got some mean soup cookin'! You could lessen it slightly, too, by taking out the adjectives and keeping the 'just' part. So you could have "You're just a nerd, though," and it would remain offensive. |

It's because most geeks are inherently annoying, so annoying that most other geeks don't like them. |
Paperboy Posts: 47 Joined: 12 Feb 2008 | Difference between geeks and nerds as i see it: geeks are way more focused. You can be a Star Wars geek, but you cannot be a Star Wars nerd. Nerds are more "general" and less focused. |
Paperboy Posts: 15 Joined: 12 Aug 2008 | Geek, i feel that nerd is derogative term, whereas geek is something more positive. |

I'm close to "genius" IQ but I didn't cross the boundary so I don't feel comfortable rubbing elbows with math whizzes or slick software programmers. My doctor friends make me feel like I'm a disappointment to someone. I prefer geek because to me it means a person who has my interests and hobbies; gaming, RPGs, Doctor Who fanboying, IDM music collecting, etc. |

The "emo" bit disturbs me. You dont call yourself an emo if you are. Just let people figure it out.
