Eclipses...nothing more, a series of common clockwork like phenomena. World ends are impossible to predict. If the world was going to end why didnt they say who will cause it so we can shoot the in the face and be done with it? Or build lots of really BIG lasers to fend off those pesky aliens...or whatever. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1920 Joined: 24 Sep 2008 | My friends and I will grab some beers and camp out on a rooftop, because if the world does end that night, well, we can't miss that. We did it earlier this year when some nut had put up posters talking about how if we looked at the night sky we'd see spaceships that had come from Aldebaran which came to warn us about the tear in the atmosphere, as prophesized in the Bible as part of one of the six seals of the Apocalypse. Nothing happened, but we had a pretty good night, and now I have a sweet poster to hang on my wall. |

Made me chuckle. Although I would love to see a Mayan calendar with little things inscribed in it. Maybe a giant stone circle carvedround November 14 with a note "Aunty Mabel's Birthday. Pick up dry cleaning." User was banned for: The Second Annual Escapist Election: Part 1: Presidential Primaries. (Permanent) |

Same sort of thing happened twice to me, I missed Y2k and I missed out on when we were going to get sucked into a blackhole from the LHC. Damn, here's hoping the Mayan's got it right. |

Lol But seriously, what most people fail to realize is that the Mayan calender system was cyclical, so that on december 22, 2012, it would simply become january 1, 0000 on a mayan calender |

No. It's just that it's their calendar. Why would every human being be wiped off the face of the earth if it's only one peoples' calendar? |

Yes, it would be a rather unfair system. User was banned for: The Second Annual Escapist Election: Part 1: Presidential Primaries. (Permanent) |

while our years may keep going up like 2012 2013 and so on, our own calender cycles through every 400 years. |

i realize this, i was just remarking that the perceived end of the world as "predicted" by the mayan calender was merely a clerical decision. |

Anyone who believes in prophecies from a time when the way to cure a headache was to drill a hole in someone's head please step over to the right side of the room. Everyone who has not been ordered to either side, please exit the room in an orderly fashion, and be quick about it because I only set the timer for 5 minutes. |

No they don't, but it is rather disturbing to see that a calendar that can accurately predict them centuries before they happen abruptly ends on December 21, 2012. Oh, and by the way, I'm one of those "maybe" people, but I just like to try and justify the other side of the argument. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1269 Joined: 1 Jun 2008 | Why precisely does the end of a calendar mean the end of the world? The Mayans, as a culture, claim to have lasted through three distinctly different "ages of the earth". The fact that there calendar ends on Dec 2012 just means that thats when they were expecting the next one. And, from a completely pointless astrological perspective (I can't even help myself), we are right at the end of the age of Pisces moving into the age of Aquarious so you could argue that they have a point. |

Well, its coming, in a short four years, the Mayan calendar reached its abrupt end, a calendar well known for accurately predicting eclipses hundreds of years in the future. So I ask you fellows at the Escapist forums, what do you think will happen?
