I think that the Mayans would have continued to make the calendar, but they were busy. Busy being raped and pilaged by the European invaders.

This is like reading the front cover of the Sun, that papershit-quality magazine that exists solely to predict coming disasters and end of the world scenarios (usually invoking Nostradamus).
The only good part in reading the cover (and by cover I mean I will never, ever OPEN the cover) is knowing that none of it will EVER come true. Then this is made bitter again by the fact that the shitzine is still in print. I hate you capitalism!

It isn't even supposed to be the end of the world, what I've read said that there was supposed to be some massive celebration due to the ending of one Long Count of the Mayan Calender.

Maybe the Mayans just got tired of predicting the celestial forecast and gave up on some random date.

In America it will be a friday, not sure In Australia, probably a Thursday. That's it.

If the world ends, life was fun and I did my best.

World ends are impossible to predict. If the world was going to end why didnt they say who will cause it so we can shoot the in the face and be done with it? Or build lots of really BIG lasers to fend off those pesky aliens...or whatever.

We did it earlier this year when some nut had put up posters talking about how if we looked at the night sky we'd see spaceships that had come from Aldebaran which came to warn us about the tear in the atmosphere, as prophesized in the Bible as part of one of the six seals of the Apocalypse. Nothing happened, but we had a pretty good night, and now I have a sweet poster to hang on my wall.

Same sort of thing happened twice to me, I missed Y2k and I missed out on when we were going to get sucked into a blackhole from the LHC. Damn, here's hoping the Mayan's got it right.

The only thing I can see happening, and given the current climate, isn't as far fetched as some people hope, is a global economic breakdown, this would be the end of the world as we currently know it

i realize this, i was just remarking that the perceived end of the world as "predicted" by the mayan calender was merely a clerical decision.

Ok, anyone dumb enough to believe in a doomsday theory based on a culture that couldn't even predict its own annihilation, please step over to the left side of the room. No they don't, but it is rather disturbing to see that a calendar that can accurately predict them centuries before they happen abruptly ends on December 21, 2012.

Oh, and by the way, I'm one of those "maybe" people, but I just like to try and justify the other side of the argument.

Why precisely does the end of a calendar mean the end of the world? The Mayans, as a culture, claim to have lasted through three distinctly different "ages of the earth". The fact that there calendar ends on Dec 2012 just means that thats when they were expecting the next one.

And, from a completely pointless astrological perspective (I can't even help myself), we are right at the end of the age of Pisces moving into the age of Aquarious so you could argue that they have a point.
