Has anyone else been getting adverts "sponsored by Google" in between posts recently? This has only started today, but I was wondering what's happening?

I guess its the new thing, the escapist needs money after all.

zoozilla as a fair warning you should edit yourself because you could end up being banned(it almost happened to me):

Virgil:
For future reference, promoting ad-blockers on our site, which relies on ads to provide content, is a fast track to get banned permanently and immediately.

Could be using something less obnoxious than Google ads, though.

Yeah, I agree. The beauty about the Google ads is that they aren't much more then text. And I'd MUCH rather have that then those freaking 'zwinky' ads or some of those stupid smiley ones or something.

The ads are hardly noticable...

AND LETS BE THANKFUL FOR THAT

I'd hate to see it so that every time we post, change forums, change sections on the main site, hell just go anywhere on this site we get stopped by a large splash screen ad and timer to continue.

The only thing that's going to really get to me about them is when it's going to happen in the RP forum.

"What dost thou say sir tristram? Shall we tally forth and bring an end to the vile influence of the evil lord Lutheriad and his armies of darkness, bringing peace back to this war torn world once and for all?"

"Ads by google: Vikings? Prostate Cancer? Death Metal? Pokemon? "

"Yes sir Haldorf, I... wait, what?"

I dunno. That Banjo Ka-whatever game ad is really annoying...

*page finishes loading*

*music starts playing*

Where the hell is that coming from?!?

*scrolls up and down and up and down until the animation catches his eye*

Seriously, I don't even own an Xbox and if I did, I wouldn't buy the game anyway. STOP BOTHERING ME!

And while we're on the subject, I'm never going to register at shaadi.com, either. At least THAT ad doesn't have annoying music that auto-plays...

Actually, I'd much rather have the Google ads, because they are easier to ignore.

Anyway, as mentioned before, The Escapist needs ads to survive with a source of income; this is no exception. There was once a time when you watched a Zero Punctuation episode, and there was actually more ads than content. So consider yourselves lucky.

who cares that they use google ads, for ads they are probly the least obtrusive

if you want to be pissed, i'd be more so at the flash ads they have, they at least eat up cpu time

but really i don't have a problem with the escapist ads, it's a great way for them to give us nice free content to enjoy

The adds break away the quote and edit button, which is something I don't like.

I understand that the Escapist needs to make money but this quest for green paper shouldn't be damaging aspects of the forum.

EDIT: Looks like this has been fixed. Yay!

Not as annoying as a pop up although when I'm trying to read through posts for a thread it kinda throws me off but its not that bad just got to get used to it.

You don't get any Google ads with the Ad Blocker Plus add-on with Firefox though it seems to annoy a lot of site owners.

It annoys them because it can cost them money.

You deserve a medal for posting the most obvious thing possible though even so, if some site owners would use less annoying ads than there would be no reason for me to block them.

Before you complain about the ads, consider for a moment how much it costs The Escapist to provide you with the media servers (for ZP and other videos), the TF2 server, and the forums themselves. A single bar of good adsense seems rather inobtrusive to me.

At least it's not like gamespy where everytime they use the word 'game' it links you to a place to buy games. Also, it makes for a great forum game, trying to get the ads to say something completely contrary to the thread at hand while still posting in context. Viagra!

LOL.

As I look at this thread now it goes:
"Ads by Google: Pop-up blocker, Ad blocker, Pop-up blocker, second coming of Christ"

Lolwhat?

Yea, I currently have:

Know how the Lord comes?

God is Love

Learn What Prayer Can Do

Christ-The hunger for Him

Their adverts seem rather flacid. Perhaps there is someway they could design a pill for adsense to last longer.

(c'mon people help me change these ads!)

I find it rather irritating. I think it would be wiser to put them at the bottom, so as people are writing their posts they will inevitably read them, but it feels slightly less obtrusive.

so wait, we cant advocate ad blockers... but the google ads can? they seriously might wanna talk to google about this...

and since it depends on clickthrough wouldnt something actually relevant be more happy than "contextual" google ads

oh, and since a good deal of the frequent posters here are smart people... well, how many of you have ever actually clicked on a google ad anywhere? lets be honest here.
EDIT: in fact, have you ever seen one that was even the slightest bit relevant to your interests or the page you were looking at at the time?

I've never clicked on the google ads. Usually it is easier and more helpful to just do a google SEARCH.

Ads by Google:
Pop Up Blocker
Prayer of Salvation
Calvary Bible Church
Bible Sermons
Bible Tracts

...What's with all the Christianity ads? I mean, I don't mind the ads at all, but they seem to be trying to get you to convert, for me at least.

EDIT: While I'm typing this my finger is kind of limp. I wish I could take something to help it be nice and stiff. Also, it could be a little harder.

those type of ads are annoying, glad you guys don't do it, it's especially annoying when you're trying to read something and the stupid add won't close

Are you secretly promoting thread derailing?

I never thought I'd see the day. =P
