Could have had them at the bottom instead of it popping up in the middle...
But yeah, it's WAAAAY better than those ones that jiggle constantly or yell at you.

Well, they could be at the bottom, but then no one would look at them.

Also, it makes for a great forum game, trying to get the ads to say something completely contrary to the thread at hand while still posting in context. Viagra!

Are you secretly promoting thread derailing?

I never thought I'd see the day. =P

No, you're missing the point, the fun part is staying in the context of the thread and sneaking in words that make google show a certain kind of advertisement.

As far as adverts go they are fairly inoffensive now I've gotten used to them.

I just want to say that I will always come to The Escapist aslong as they don't introduce those ads that whenever you go to their website appear and then you have to click "continue to site". I don't know why but I can't stand those!

I understand the point wilson, I was just having some fun with you. That's why I edited in secretly in discreet italics. Though your idea is fun it's just a matter of time before someone, while remaining on topic or in context, mentions...

I don't think it's that big of a deal. They don't bother me in the slightest, and it pulls in extra cash for the Escapist.

*EDIT* Oh, but if you ever introduce those ad's that make an annoying buzzy noise until you click them, I'm gone.

My GOD I hate them...

Could be using something less obnoxious than Google ads, though.

Yeah, I agree. The beauty about the Google ads is that they aren't much more then text. And I'd MUCH rather have that then those freaking 'zwinky' ads or some of those stupid smiley ones or something.

Actually, I'd much rather have the Google ads, because they are easier to ignore.

Anyway, as mentioned before, The Escapist needs ads to survive with a source of income; this is no exception. There was once a time when you watched a Zero Punctuation episode, and there was actually more ads than content. So consider yourselves lucky.

Those days are now back again, with all the "sponsored by Banjo" stuff. Once again I must rush to manually halt an episode right after it is done. I suspect the add-flooding of ZP to be an on/off thing. One thing I will say, however, is that I'll never trust any Escapist employee's review of Nuts and Bolts, for obvious reasons.

I just find those ads annoying because of my limited downloads.

So the answer to WWJD?

It's not give your money to the poor and meek and needy, its spend it all on google ads!

I'm all for google ads personally, Escapist deserves some cash, and they're unobtrusive and dont yell 'O H MY GOD! NO WAAAY!' just because I accidentally let my mouse slip over to the right a bit. GRR I hate smiley ads.

:D
See that? was free and means I'm happy or joking!

Has anyone else noticed that the ads kind of mirror the site? I mean that they are very calm, unobtrusive ads but at the same time can be absolutely insane. Just a thought...

You don't get any Google ads with the Ad Blocker Plus add-on with Firefox though it seems to annoy a lot of site owners.

Regarding the Banjo ad playing music, it is VERY sensitive. If your mouse comes within spitting distance of it, it starts to play. It may seem like it's going off randomly, but it's all about mouse proximity.

The advertistas of the world will not stop until they can enter your dreams!

Seriously, more ads is bad.

You know, I actually do find that hilarious so long as the ads are in the MIDDLE of the fucking thread. On my JA clan's forum we do that all the time and even screenshot the most hilarious finds... And you would not believe the kind of stuff we find there sometimes...

Seriously what adds?
Could someone take a screenshot or something?
I really have no idea what you people are talking about.

Although I'm using an unnamed web browser (hint: flaming animal) and it's probably blocking them but that wouldn't matter would it?

I remember the old days of using IE7 though, that was Add-o-palooza.

I dislike adds, but these are, after all, not the worst kind. And to the one who asked if we had ever clicked on a google add: Yes one time, while in gmail and it was relevant for the mail and if I remember correctly from amazon :)

Let us see what the adds come up with.

After seeing these lovely new google ads, of the variety that I thought only small forums used, I've decided that you're paying that Yahtzee fellow a little too much.

Is there going to be an option in the future to become a supporting member, or something similar, so that we don't have to see the ads?

I'm suprised how many people in this thread use IE7 or don't use Firefox to its full potential.

Well, they could be at the bottom, but then no one would look at them.

I would accept them being at both the top and bottom of the second page onwards.

They should only appear at the bottom of the first page so the Title/1st post/OP isn't messed up.

Something more game-related in the adverts would be sensible, rather than help for alcoholism and depression appearing in the Philosophy thread...

If they are standard google ads, then they relate to what is in the text and not necessarily (sp?)to what the site is about.

Maybe so, but perhaps The Escapist could embed some hidden tags on each page to 'spin' the selection in a sensible direction.

Question: Does the host get money from the advertiser via Google for each 'click-through', or is it just compensated for renting "Real Estate".

If it is the former this site would do well to get some more relevant links than I have so far seen.
If it is the latter Google would do well to tweak their bot's algorithm based on a profiling of click-throughs from each page on this site.

Either way we should expect to see less sillyness.

Wow, I really can say I've never even set my eye on those kind of ads at least on this site.
It's probably because my browser and certain add-ons blocks them but that wouldn't be costing The Escapist any money would it?
I mean they're already sponsored, the money is already there, or does it directly relate to how much hits the add gets?
