Wow, I really can say I've never even set my eye on those kind of ads at least on this site. It's probably because my browser and certain add-ons blocks them but that wouldn't be costing The Escapist any money would it? I mean they're already sponsored, the money is already there, or does it directly relate to how much hits the add gets?
Ad revenue is either based on views or clickthroughs. Sometimes a combination of both. If you aren't viewing or clicking on ads, then yes it costs the site money. We can't make you view ads, and we certainly understand how annoying they can get. But it's how we're able to make money to pay both for the resources the site uses, and pay the people like Yahtzee who provide the content.
It's simple, like a basic form of voting. If you don't like seeing this website or any of the videos like Zero Punctuation on it, block the ads running on the website. Eventually, if enough of our viewers do it, the website will go away. Along with all the content that runs on it. ;)
The Iron Ninja: The only thing that's going to really get to me about them is when it's going to happen in the RP forum.
"What dost thou say sir tristram? Shall we tally forth and bring an end to the vile influence of the evil lord Lutheriad and his armies of darkness, bringing peace back to this war torn world once and for all?"
"Ads by google: Vikings?Prostate Cancer?Death Metal?Pokemon? "
As irritating as I find google ads (while i understand the new for ad revenue, at any given time at least 40% of my screen is taken up by ads for the fucking lich king) they are occasionally hilarious. All this talk about pop up blockers being a good way to get banned? Guess what that's brought up adverts for.

My only problem with the ads you have here are that they cause so much slow down.

EDIT: Zooming into the screen is grand Decoy
Virgil: For future reference, promoting the zoom button and/or the scroll button on our site, which relies on ads to provide content, is a fast track to get banned permanently and immediately.
As I look at this thread now it goes: "Ads by Google: Pop-up blocker, Ad blocker, Pop-up blocker, second coming of Christ"
Lolwhat?
Their adverts seem rather flacid. Perhaps there is someway they could design a pill for adsense to last longer.
(c'mon people help me change these ads!)
It'll be a stiff challenge, thats for sure, lasting long in these conditions is a competitive task. One sniff of that stuff-blocker and the hard times just start rolling those poor sites that need adverts to stay the distance. They try to please their users, but they just run out of steam too early. They need something to help keep them in the game.
Something to stiffen their resolve. Harden their resilience, lengthen and engorge their page hits.
Reaperman Wompa: Has anyone else noticed that the ads kind of mirror the site? I mean that they are very calm, unobtrusive ads but at the same time can be absolutely insane. Just a thought...
explain please, i dont get it. also, viagra.
The ads sit there, not really screaming at you while in simple calm text ramble on about random things, seeming a bit insane. I mean a discussion with half way through the page ads for Jesus and ad blockers is a bit strange. Just like the escapist.
I didn't notice the ads until I was browsing through this thread :D The only ads I hate are ones that make sounds, especially when you're meant to be quiet. D:
Dommyboy: You don't get any Google ads though it seems to annoy a lot of site owners.
why was he banned for this? smells of corruption!
The parts of his post he was banned for were removed (either by himself or by a mod, I don't know) The rule seems to be that you don't mention any kind of ad-blockers, or you get poked with a very sharp stick.
wilsonscrazybed: Also, it makes for a great forum game, trying to get the ads to say something completely contrary to the thread at hand while still posting in context. Viagra!
axia777: Get (mumble mumble mumble) It blocks all ads.
Goodbye then.
Edit: as in, "goodbye Axia777 who didn't read the rules already stated in this thread about mentioning (mumble mumble mumble)," not "goodbye ads, I'm going to to take Axia777's advice" Besides I don't have (mumble mumble)

But seriously now, do they have to be in the middle of the page?! I like Larenxis's idea. Why can't we put them to the side or under the page so it's not right in our faces. Plus it looks horrible and is so annoying. I know I'm bound to acceidently hit one while looking through posts one day.

I think that is kind of the idea. If you want to avoid the danger, just keep your cursor to one of the sides. /smirk

The only problem with that plan is that it makes the ads so unobtrusive they don't actually get many clicks, which is the whole point. Personally, I find the big banner ads more annoying, since they ruin the aesthetic of the forums with big splashes of colour where the theme here is a whit, grey and blue. The new ads at least fit this aesthetic enough that I can explain them away.
