So by a bizzare twist of fate we have a nuclear war. Civilization as we know it will soon be over. Lets work on the assumption that everyone is aware of the the immediate impact of the missles and has had time to outfit a basement or thier own bunker to flee too and stocked it with all the nessesary essentials since they are all paranoid maniacs.

So you have a matter of minutes before everyone gets to eat radiation for lunch. Whats the only thing you decide to rescue and preserve for the future? You only have enough time to grab one item.

NB: Found no other thread on this, so yeah.

My hard drive and a bunch of books. They're small enough to carry all at once so that counts. If Fallout 3 is to be believed, people will pay big new-money for "old" information eventually. That'll be my little retirement fund right there.

Oh, and a Ginster's Large Ploughman Roll. They're unreasonably tasty.

LOL. I never find other threads when I start one and I keep getting locked for samey. Maybe the search algorithm needs re-combobulated.

If I could save one thing, it would be the poster of Garfield covered in toothpaste saying "I hate Mondays" that I've had on my bedroom wall since I was in my crib. Not because I like Garfield. Not because I think it's funny. But because this hideous thing has been glowering over me since before I was aware of time itself, and no nuclear holocaust is going to rob me of the joy of having on the wall of the room in which I die. Because at that moment, as I draw my last breath, I will look at it, by then surely tattered and worn, and say what will surely be remembered as the most stirring last words of any human being in the history of last words:

"I hate Mondays too, Garfield. We all hate Mondays, too."

You can carry all the women in the world? You have a big enough bunker? What about the fat chicks?

I would have to say my comic book collection personally. It's fills an entire row on my shelf and I'm strong enough to carry it.

Your mother.

I mean, uh. Some Branston Pickle and my partner. Probably. Some combination of my partner and a thing.

And your mum.

my one item would be the generator, ps3, controllers, and lcd monitor i keep in one bag... just in case... and i would already have 500 gallons of gas in my basement.. and an exhaust system for the fumes... oh and rock band.

Edit: oh and my wife and kids.

Edit again: Okay I decided I would put a real answer... I have a backpack with a full first aid kid, little army shovel, sleeping bag, warm clothes, survival stuff in it... I'd probably already have that in my basement though. So I guess I'd have me guns in the basement also. Mp3 player... I'd bring my MP3 player.

My Mac.

Should an AI and/or a bunch of robots (Transformers, anyone?) decide to colonise earth, I will have provided them with the cure for robot cancer! They'll love me!

Talk about 'Dead Famous'.

Well, working on the assumption that family, friends, pets and what have you make it down, I would pick up that big table. This is cheating really, as that big table has on it, an iPod, a phone, a new PC and a truckload of games, a DS Lite and a big bunch of games, a Wii and some intensely good games, a 360 with three brilliant games, several controllers for the consoles, the guitar hero stuff, some chargers and other assorted stuff, including the wireless router.

I think that'll be one of the best option, don't forget to bring the adapter/batteries..

That's a good one actually. I'll keep the paper and we can meet up after the radiation has cleared.

Depends on what the half life of the radiation from the bombs is (i.e how long till its safe to emerge from the bunker) and whether others have these shelters preped and ready too.

If the half life is relatively short then i'll find the nearest firearm and ammo ready to face super mutants on the way out and/or start my own raider gang.If the half life is long then i'm not really sure; something entertainment related.

Also I'm amazed noone has made the mandatory goverment issue box of puppets reference yet.

Not really sure why, i'm not diehard christian or anything, but it had a huge influence on literature, art, history etc. It should not be left behind!

This might not be such a good idea; depending on the half life of the radiation you could be in the bunker a long time. Depending on the size of the bunker and the age span of the dog you might end up sat next to its corpse (Sorry to be crude) or its crap (you cant walk it outside remember).

My Hellraiser music box. I'd want people fighting bloody battles for that thing thinking it's some kind of holy relic from a former era in the event I die from radiation exposure

So? It's my dog, I won't leave it behind. And you don't need to be in a bunker, quite the contrary, you might want to be in a bunker for the first week or two but then get the hell out of the radiation epicenter. Even lead deteriorates after some years of radiation exposure.

Ermm, presumably you'd need to excrete at some point too? Surely you'd just do with the dogs what you would do with your own? (I somehow doubt that there would be flushing toilets...).

If I already have a bunker equipped with the necessary essentials, I wouldn't need anything else.

Ok, all my games and gadgets. They're non-essential but very nice to have.
