scifi has been nicer to me over the years... it has Star Trek and Star Wars Fantasy has LotR and.... Willow :(
I voted Fantasy, cause just like a dream
I'm not into fantasy. My girlfriend loves it; won't have a bad word said about it. I tried to read the Hobbit on her insistence and I just couldn't get away with it. I'm not particularly into sci-fi either really, but if I was forced to, I'd edge towards sci-fi.
depends how you mash em togther
I like both a lot but I find that fantasy is rarely done in a manner I like. I normally find too flowery (Lord of the Rings), to childish (Harry Potter) or too forcefully dark (Warhammer). I find it very rare when the balance is gotten right. I loved the Once and Future King which kind of counts as fantasy.
I prefer Sci-fi, I think there is a lot more good sci-fi than there is good Fantasy.
I like a sort of combination between the two. Like, a sort of magical science. Or a scientific study of magic.
I love fantasy, because it tends to incorporate a greater level of depth into it's universes. That said, magic is it's own technology. Anywhere that magic has been turned into an industry makes for great storytelling.
I like both, but if i had to choose i'd go with Sci-Fi (Starcraft > Warcraft!).
What have you done?! You've opened the gates to the realm of the Flaming Trolls! ....But seriously, a mix is probably best.
Other than Star Wars are there any other notable mixes of Science Fiction and Fantasy?
Me too, I love steam-punk.
Final fantasy? The longest journey?
I love sci-fi, fantasy, and science-fantasy. I read, watch, and play them all.
For those wanting more on Science Fantasy, look up on Wikipedia: the Science Fantasy page (has more info at the bottom, a section on SF Otherworlds) Wikipedia may not be entirely factually correct, but it has great external links, and more importantly for this discussion, lists of works. Check it out.
Sci-Fi, because it always tends to be the more inhumanly violent of the two. However, I do like fantasy, though I have a problem: Many Fantasy Authors will construct incredibly ferocious, murderous armies that slaughter allin their wake. However, I tend to read these armies and laugh, because: They all wear leather armour. Dear god, anyone wearing anything less than chain and partial plate into a battle is going to die horribly. Leather armour can't stop a knife blow, let alone a well-placed sabre. So here I am, reading Goodkind, and the little tactician in the back of my brain keeps going 'No, just hit them with crossbows' or 'bring me my arbequs and halbaerdiers' or 'And then a hundred knights came over the hill and wiped them out with lance and maces.' They bear so little resemblace to real warfare it frightens me. D'Harans are apparently fierce, savage warriors. That's nice. I also know that all they wear is light chain and leather armour. BRING ME MY ZWEIHANDER-WEILDING SOCIOPATHS AND HEAVILY ARMOURED KNGHTS! Oh, they formed a pike formation. BRING ME MY CROSSBOWMEN AND ARBEQUSIERS! Oh look, they're pulling a cavalry charge. Right into a line of Pikemen. What I want, is a fantasy novel set around the 1500s- Knights, Pikes, Guns and voodoo.
Fantasy. I love it.
Most fantasy authors aren't tacticians. Yeah, I love fantasy. I'm reading through Terry Pratchett's Nation (just picked it up today, a thoroughly enjoyable read so far)
I prefer fantasy myself. I'm not against sci-fi, I just have and read stacks more fantasy books.
I love both. Fantasy has that lovable edge while sci-fi just gives this amazing feeling of exploration and wonder that just cannot be matched by fantasy (close though).
I enjoy both for what they are, though I'm much more of a science fiction man However, I do enjoy the occasional science fantasy (The Stand comes to mind)...
I've read all of Feist's work bar Rage of a mad god. They're okay, but there's often far too much of the whole 'We do this for the greater good' bullshit. And even then, all of his cavalry AND infantry only had chainmail.
i'd have to say fantasy more than sci fi but i don't mind either really
I'll take any genre, including Girl Vampire Erotica and My Life In the Fashion Industry, if it's thoughtful, engaging, and revealing. I.e., well-written. I can't remember the last time I read a well-written science fiction or fantasy story post-1958. Except for the stuff I write. Which I don't finish, because I already know how it ends in my head. Too bad for you people. Too, too bad.
I love sci-fi and Fantasy but i dont like the thought of the two together
My preference is with Sci-Fi, but depending on how well your ale to meld the supernatural with the advanced, Science Fantasy can turn out to be pretty good, too.
*George Lucas and Some Guy collide at film college and mix up their scripts* Just thought I'd attempt to make you all laugh. :)
The truth is rarely funny.
I am a 65-35% guy, 65% Sci-fi and 35% Fantasy. In my world there exists no books in the fantasy genre able to mach up to "Dune" by Frank Herbert and "Exession" and "The Player Of Games" by Iain M. Banks. I think it is ok to combine them sometimes...
Dune is nice, but I found it too...silly, with the whole 'One-planet-is-key-to-the-empire' and the prophetic superhumans. Oh, and his warfare is a bit odd.
Sci-fi can have it's own depth. For instance, the manual for the PC/Sega CD game Microcosm.. it's actually one of the most hilarious things I've ever witnessed. about 25 pages of story, an extensive list of planets, their populations, their geological make-up, their economic status, their relation to the various powerbases.. What is the game? You play a tiny person swimming through a person's body killing robot aliens. deeeeep. :P
They could be combined satisfactorily (I myself have a huge stiffy for the Dark Tower series, and of course Star Wars), but if I have to choose, I prefer well-written science fiction.
Either genre can be done well, including if you mix them together, bring on the science fantasy!

What type of speculative fiction do you like better? I'm asking as these are big genres for gaming, especially RPGs. There is even a category of "Science Fantasy" where the magic of Fantasy and the technology of Science Fiction combine (ala Star Wars, or Steampunk stuff).
Without getting off-topic, the subject came up in a recent thread about Final Fantasy (which has always been both) and I was just wondering what people preferred more. Does the medium make a difference in what you like (i.e. Sci-Fi film vs Fantasy novel)?
I don't really have a preference for either genre or the medium conveyed thereof. I do feel that for gaming Fantasy tends to be overused in RPGs (particularly MMOs) and I would like to see more Science Fiction RPGs.
