bet seriously the only thing a netbook is good for is word processing and maybe spread sheets and u have 2 be incredibly dull to only do that on a computer. besides notebooks are compact enough and can fit in a briefcase or backpack and far more powerful so just go with a notebook
Radelaide: How did this become a debate about how much C5P Mum makes? And Eggo, you're a bonafied twat on the occasion.
Read the thread and see why.
I did. He's just pissed his parents wouldn't spend that much money on him.
He doesn't have to appreciate what my parents did. A) my parents spoiled me and b) I manipulated and played them against each other so I do deserve some scathing comments.
Haha other then the fact that hes always calling people out and basically a well-trained troll(One in disguise)...nothing really. I've always felt that way about him, he just likes to nit-pick at everything. It grows tiresome after a while on these boards.
I'd like to extend my deepest gratitude once again though for helping me find this laptop. My friend that attends the college I plan on going to said that it will run everything there just fine.

I commend you, good sir. Here, have an Internet *hands Internets*
My mum is buying my laptop, then I have to pay her back... Sigh...
Can you manipulate your parents into buying me a laptop?

If I knew you in real life there is a very good chance I could.
I also wish people would stop referring to me as "sir".
Mr.Pandah: Also, Alex, Do you enjoy CS? It will be my first semester attending college for the CS Major. I was wondering if its an enjoyable line of work and is there a market for it? Or is it oversaturated? =/
I think it really depends on your professors and the details of your degree program. A good CS program can teach you tons of useful stuff. Not just about computers, either. A bad CS program... well, you'll hopefully still get some useful job skills.
CS done well prepares you to go into a number of different careers. You can do a lot more than just application programming. In college, I really enjoyed AI, distributed systems, and theory (yes, theory -- it's pretty cool and really helpful).
I'm a government contractor so I can't tell you much about how the regular software industry is doing right now.

Can you give me some more details? Like, did your department say this was required for some software you would need to be running or something?
-- Alex
Well, as I am pretty clueless as to what exactly entails all of these programs (like, what it takes to run them) since I am new, but very very eager to learn, I'll list them for you.
Labview, AutoCAD, MS Office 2007 Enterprise, MS Project 2007, MS OneNote 2007, MS InfoPath 2007, MS Visual Studio 2005, ROBOLAB version 2.9.2, MATLAB Release 2007a, MS SharePoint Designer 2007, MS Publisher 2007, MS Groove 2007, MS Visio 2007, MS Expression Web, Norton Antivirus Corp Ed. 10.2, Additional "toolboxes" for MATLAB.
Thats all of the Required Software. It will cost me an extra $225 for the school to upload it all into my laptop, but its better that than me trying to figure out the most cost-effective way to get all of those programs.
Thats really great too Alex, it makes me even more sure that I want to pursue this career field. I have been admitted to the college, its just a matter of financial aid on whether or not I will actually attend it. Its all still up in the air =/ I would have gotten a $20,000 scholarship if I had went there for the Fall semester, but now due to a recent merge with NYU, its much harder to get into AND the scholarships are much more scarce.

Oh well though, thats life for ya.
I can see why you need some extra beef for your PC.
Oh? Are those programs truly taxing? The laptop should still be alright though...right? I added the better video card, the RAM and the 2.4 processor as opposed to what it was at first.
Ah, okay. I take it you know quite a bit about this. Are you also a major in say, Digital Media or CS? I don't mind it taking some battery life with it, but I just want it to be able to run the programs, it doesn't have to be smooth as silk, but it needs to get the job done.

No, I don't know jack about most of that. I just know what AutoCAD does, and those programs tend to eat resources badly.

Haha okay =) I'm surprised by how much help I got from simply asking. It really paid off this time =D Thanks again...Ma'am(?) At least...thats what I understood from the tangent before =P

Oh, okay, I see...
It looks like they expect you to be running a lot of stuff right on your laptop.
My CS department did things quite differently. We had labs full of Debian (Linux) machines, all of which could be accessed through SSH. Basically didn't need my own box for anything.
Mr.Pandah: =D Good to know. Now if only you had connections to the college I'm attempting to get money for... =P
What's the name of the college? Maybe I could help.
*Dumbfounded stare* Wait...really? I mean, I live in New York and according to your profile your in Texas...So, I really don't see you being able to pull any strings...but its called Polytechnic Institute of NYU.
If it was sarcasm, I'm currently laughing at my gullibleness and that I just responded to it =)

I know some people there, I'll pull some strings and see what happens.
crimson5pheonix: Eggo and I were starting to talk about notebooks on a different thread and I can already see an argument brewing and I didn't want to hijack the thread (for once), so here we can all share in the pain.
For those who don't know, a netbook is a small underpowered notebook with outstanding battery life and portability.
Holy hijackers, Batman! Crim isn't stealing a thread? Anyways, I would say it depends on what you're doing. If you're taking notes in class, then I would recommend Netbook. If you're doing more processor-intensive stuff, notebook is the obvious choice.

Jeez, do you really? May I friend you? and if we have any other comments related to this, I guess we can talk through messages, I apologize for severely derailing the thread to helping me out.

First off, you're not derailing this thread, it's mostly about tech talk any way. Secondly I was just messing with you the entire time. I get some sick pleasure from it.

Yep. And now this thread will never be the same. It seems like any time I post in the same thread as you, it goes completely off track. Although, does it count as derailment if it's your own thread?
Mr.Pandah: Haha I knew it! Bastard =P I knew I was too gullible to meddle amongst the ranks of youz guyz.
Don't worry. Crim screws with people all the time.

There really isn't any derailment in this thread, even saying this isn't derailment.
And I don't screw with people ALL the time, only when I'm bored.
Read the thread and see why.
